I don't really have much to add other than EVH was one of my heroes and I learned a ton of his songs on guitar. Some of those riffs are so badass to play.

Best ever distorted guitar tone.
Amazing creativity and technique with the tapping stuff.
He forever changed how the guitar is played and it can't be overstated what he did for the instrument.

As far as guitar legends go its Hendrix and EVH as the 1) and 1A) and then everyone else.

And I got to see the band at what ended up being their last ever show. It was the reunion tour with David Lee Roth back in 2015 at the Hollywood Bowl. David Lee Roth's singing was terrible but Eddie, Wolfgang, and Alex were locked in. Alex especially surprised me. He's a great drummer.

Damn, that's nuts. Not a huge VH fan either but he was always amazing on the guitar.

I can't believe I'm the one posting this, but Izumi Matsumoto, creator the Kimagure Orange Road manga died 2 days ago at age 61. It was never one of my favorites back in the day (cute, but a very distant second to Maison Ikkoku) but it has been in my queue to give an other go since the BD was released.

Anthony Chisholm, 77. Broadway, TV and film actor of considerable acclaim, but I knew him from HBO's Oz as gang boss Burr Redding. Even if you don't remember his character's name (I didn't! blurs together a bit, does later Oz for me), you'll almost certainly remember this scene opposite poor Method Man. Blimey that was hardcore.

Actually, now I think about it, I wonder if Boardwalk Empire deliberately reprised it with Chalky White slapping on the Giallo gloves and choking the living dogshit outta that Italian thug. Hmm.

James Randi, stage magician whose claim to fame is debunking claims of actual magic and pseudosciene.
Incredibly cool guy, but at an age of 92 I guess he had a good run.

Sad to hear, but yeah, that's a good long run. He was still in fine form a couple years back, from what I recall. Some classic material came out of his TV appearances, like his PWNing of Bowl Cut Monk and his paper-levitating antics.

If you've not seen it, check out An Honest Liar

I can't help but think of Randi and not think of the supernatural and unexplained phenomena so prevalent in 80's media. Time-Life books Mysteries of the Unknown Series

It's a personal testament to him that, despite how many Bonds there have been over the years, whenever I do a bad/cheesy James Bond voice (even while watching one of the Bond movies with another actor featured) it's always him that I imitate.

I know in real life they were not frenemies but feels quite eerie that he died so close to Sean Connery. Surely they could get this into SNL next week.

Maradona just died from a heart failure. A life full of addictions finally got him.

it's kinda sad to know his family and friends were planning to change that shitty lifestyle of him after he went through surgery a few weeks ago.

Who you gonna call to intimidate your dead wife's rapist while wearing hot pink? "TRY THE WINE!"

He's also the trainer who helped skinny actor Christopher Reeve get yoked for the role of Superman.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Music composer Harold Budd, who had collaborated with basically every ambient artist (and many others), has passed away at 84.

Dame Barbara Windsor, 83, Alzheimer's. Probably best known as Peggy Mitchell nowadays, but I will always hold her in the highest regards for co-starring (read: getting her tits out) in several Carry On films - though not the apex of the series, Carry On Behind, which is the Raiden Fighters Jet of British seaside postcard comedy. A blistering precision-calibrated buzzsaw of tits, dicks and jokes thereon. You'll get slapped with a dick joke straight into a pair of tits, and indeed slapped with a tits joke into a pair of dicks. A marvel of precision lowbrow!

Thank you and farewell Ma'am. ;-;7

Taught us all a valuable lesson BITD: if the other guy's bigger than you, hit em with a fuckin brick. (a poignant rejoinder to John Witherspoon's fatherly "win some, lose some" philosophy - it's not like Cube shot the man Pops 3;)

Image

I didn't twig until some years later that he was also ZEUS from No Holds Barred opposite Hulk Hogan. Which in a way was Friday for second-graders, except unlike Smokey, Hulk kept his rampant drug use on the down-low!

Was surprised far more recently by his small but significant role in Unironically Good Cannon Film™ Runaway Train. Has a full head of hair in that one, quite a handsome chap outside of his frightener roles.

Not sure if I can say that Friday is a hidden gem... it's pretty well known... but I feel it's not quite appreciated as much as it should be. The only person that has definitely done anything better since then is Regina King with Watchmen (a layup of course) and perhaps Bernie Mac w/ some stand up before passing on himself. Chris Tucker took the wholesome route soon after, and we were condemned forever to watch Friday on repeat.
