Legendary babe-drawer extraordinaire Frank Thorne died this week. 90 y/o, so a nice run. Here's a NSFW article about him from Heavy Metal showcasing his work. Most famous for the early Red Sonja comics, which still sadly has not been reproduced as a TPB or digitally in a good way (the coloring is horrendous in the TPB; otherwise only in a fancy b&W 'artist's edition' or whatever, which is essentially work in progress sheets, complete with white-out and tape and scribbles).

Cliff Simon, known to many as Ba'al from Stargate SG-1 died in a kiteboarding accident. Such a shame for a guy who really played the villain role so well!

Marvelous Marvin Hagler has died suddenly at 66.

Way too young, even if I feel old as fuck typing that.

One of my earliest memories was my whole extended family watching THE WAR at my uncle's place, on his comically towering 80s satellite dish. I am 99% sure someone taped it and made a tidy profit on his trunkload of blank Kodaks. So this dude will always be cutting edge to me ;-;7

Sad news to learn that Yaphet Kotto, my favorite not-Ripley character on Alien (and so many other classic films) died at 81. Any man that willingly goes toe-to-toe with a xeno gets mad respect. Shoutouts to his one movie duo with Dolemite himself.

Fuck. Parker and Brett together again. 3;

(someone remarked that the Alien cast were departing in script order - John Hurt, Harry Dean Stanton - but Tom Skerritt's still keeping on. and that was bullshit anyway, unless Jonesy is in hypersleep IRL somewhere.

although I guess if you go with the cocoon scene as canon - I do! - then Skerritt should be second-last >_> blimey this is more morbid than the film itself)

I'll always be fond of his turn as Blaxploitative Bond Badman Dr. Kanaga. First villain of Moore's run, a suavely evil fellow who's simmeringly displeased WRT Bond nailing his fortune-telling bird! Some innovative knife-fighting moves, too. Not to warble on with yet more anecdotes, but Moore's run was big on VHS at the time (I used to call him "Mr. Pussy," I must've been a smart kid! maddest shagger of the Bonds by some yardage, indeed his tendency to get all the pussy is what lands him on Kanaga's shit-list!), so Kotto's another face I knew before I knew WTF a television even was.

Frank Thorne?!??

I really enjoyed the early Red Sonja comics because of his work, plus he dabbled in Savage Sword of Conan quite a bit. This is one hell of a loss.

Famed racing driver Sabine Schmitz has died from cancer at the age of 51. How sad! I thought she was great on Top Gear.

I waited with anticipation for each Savage Sword of Conan to be released, but strangely never read Red Sonja. I will have to rectify that.

Lucky bastard.
---------------------------

The French wine merchant Steven Spurrier passed away today at 79. He wasn't especially famous, but he was responsible for something interesting. In the 1970's, he arranged for a blind taste testing of cheapo California wines and ultra expensive French wines. He invited all the big, famous wine experts in all the land to come and prove they could determine which of the wines was the "real thing," thinking that his French wines would be the clear winners.

Not a single one of the experts could tell which wine was which, and most of the awards went to cheapo California wines. It wasn't the last time something like this happened, but it was the first time that people realized the whole mystique of wine is just a crock of shit and you're better off just spending $12.

She got yelled at by Jeffrey Tambor pretty badly during the final stressful, miserable season of Arrested Development.

I think he fessed up that he was out of line, if I'm not mistaken. (It was better than Season 4, btw).

I guess this one slipped under the radar for most, but MF Doom passed away last October, just reading about it now.

https://www.npr.org/2021/01/01/95251927 ... dead-at-49

Happened like a week before our election here, so the US wasn't paying attention for the most part.

I know very little about Phillip, but I feel bad for Elizabeth, losing someone she was with since freaking World War II.

The man behind the world's largest Ponzi scheme, Bernie Madoff, dead in prison at 82 years of age. Having served less than 12 years of his 150-year prison sentence.
