The sad thing is Iraq might have ended up a vassal state like Saudi Arabia is, in that alternative timeline. If expanding the empire were our dictators' ultimate goal and not just grifting money, they're utterly incompetent at it.

The "US actually caused Saddam to invade Kuwait" is another classic from the bowels of Dirtbag Left Dictator Apologetics, in the genre of "NPC theory of International Relations" which states that only the US is responsible for everything that happens.

The previous argument in this thread was: The US did sanctions against Iraq! US bad! Now the current argument is: The US didn't threaten Saddam with sanctions! US bad!

The background of the Iraq-Kuwait conflict is that Saddam owed Kuwait money, and he was already massing equipment and troops at the border before the US said anything one way or another.

The US envoy to Iraq asked what was going on but also said that the US saw "friendship, not confrontation" and that we weren't taking sides. The US envoy also gave an assurance that we weren't going to force matters with economic sanctions. In other words, the US statements were doing what the Left has always claimed the US doesn't do, which is say that other countries can and should resolve their disputes without the US dictating terms.

Saddam is the one who decided that this gave him the opportunity to invade Kuwait and try to conquer it. Once again, the blame ultimately rests with him deciding to start a war because he didn't want to pay his bills.

p.s. I want to clarify that I am not calling any of my friends at Shmups Farm "dirtbags" or any other impolite thing. After all, in recent times I may have thought some of these arguments were true, and not for any bad reason.

p.p.s. It's OK to be skeptical about the US and I don't want to discourage it. But I also would like to encourage people to keep up with the current state of history. Just like you would get a bad view of US slavery if you only read the work of Ulrich B. Phillips, you probably don't have the full picture of recent events if you are relying on people who are doing PR for autocrats for pay, and a lot of these links have become a lot clearer even in the last few months.

Klaus Schulze, pioneering electronic musician bites it at 74. Obviously, he's most famous for his tenure in Tangerine Dream, but his solo work is pretty amazing to, if this stuff is your cup of joe.

Those are both choice cut soundtracks. Really most of his solo output could easily function as soundtrack music; none of it is so in-your-face that it demands prime attention.

It's really fantastic music for having on while you're doing something and sober (as opposed to chugging Guinness and banging to Iron Maiden or something).

I feel like a dingus sometimes, realising that basically all the art & sound dudes who contributed to stuff like Blade Runner, Alien and The Thing are hitting their 70s now, end of an era territory. Makes me wish I'd paid more attention to them when I was younger. It's only now I really appreciate Ron Cobb, the guy behind the APC from Aliens among other treasures. That shot where the marines land and the Dropship takes off with the APC rolling out will still look amazing a hundred years from now, absolute craftsmanship and vision. (nice tribute to him from Alien Theory on Youtube)

Then again, I'm a lazy git and the Internet has made researching these wonderful people 1000x easier. Better late than never I guess.

Similar. I watch Soul Train clips from the 70s all the time to get through rough patches at work and always punch myself in the balls for not being cool enough when I was a kid to realize how fucking awesome it was.

Anyway, Blade Runner is a perfectly listenable soundtrack while working, so on repeat it goes...

You know you're discussing a great act, when their discography has a dilemma like that one in it. Just blasted both end-to-end, my neighbours are inimitably rocked yet spooked. As always, while I find MFM catchier and Violator eerier - a perfect late 80s/early 90s pairing - they cross over into each other's respective fortes so well, the immaculately catchy and the chillingly offbeat, that playing one and not the other feels like watching just half of a favourite film.
