At least she won't be surprised by her future suicide, unlike the other guy.

Goodbye, Sidney Poitier. The last thing he did before his retirement long ago was the 1997 remake of The Jackal, the one with Bruce Willis as the titular assassin and Richard Gere. And we still call him “Mr. Tibbs”.

Great man. Spoke at my highschool once, I know for a fact he turned at least one wayward young guy's life around. Think I'll revisit In The Heat Of The Night this weekend.

Yeah, graduated a year ahead of me, I dated his younger sister before getting conscripted for the merchant marines, we were still a crown colony then.

Nah, he visited one year. Lovely man. Also Mario Andretti and his wife, who was very charming, bless her soul. I was a dumb kid who only paid attention to Mario because a new Genesis racer with his name on the cover was out. I had a lucky childhood tbh. 3;

I'm surprised. It's rare we get a famous actor right in our schools.

Really good article in the Dallas News. He was one of those rare stars who transcended mere fame. Although, not so rare in those dangerous times, I suppose. Reminds me of Lemmy Kilmister's comment on Little Richard. "Imagine the balls he had, playing Rock n' Roll in the American deep south of the 1940s... while black, and gay, AND in drag." Image

Funny motherfucker. Was listening to his tribute to Norm Macdonald just recently, sounded like a great friend too.

Always liked Saget. I remember him best for Full House because that was when I was in middle school and I was pretty much the target demographic. I understand that his stand-up was particularly raunchy and dark, but I don't recall ever seeing any (though that was a long time ago).

Great voice, like a banshee-possessed Geddy Lee. Great tunes too, you can hear entire subgenres surfacing in Breadfan.

Absolutely. Budgie is a missing-link band. As heavy as it gets, and progressive funk inspired, but also minimalist. I can hear the steps between them and technical thrash.

Damn, I didn't know Peter Bogdanovich had died. Jan 6th, 82, Parkinson's. Not a bad run, I guess. I really only knew his work retroactively via The Sopranos, but he always seemed really cool. Conducted a great interview with David Chase.

Louie Anderson, actor/comedian, passed away at 68. The only thing I remember from that guy was that one cartoon with his name on it. (Life with Louie.)

Oh no :(

Well at least he leaves behind an impressive volume of work. Kept working on Valerian almost until the end. Those books were a massive part of my childhood.

Howard Hesseman is great. He was also the History teacher in Head of the Class, and he was in Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. Also was in This is Spinal Tap.

Sad, seemed like a super high-achiever. Those types can subject themselves to terrible pressure.

From that site, I see Bob Wall has died at 82. Probably best known as O'Hara, the midboss goon Bruce Lee owns in Enter The Dragon, but he had a ton of other important work in martial arts and MA cinema.

Image

Like most of Dragon's cast, he enjoys distinguished beltscroller cred via Double Dragon, which blagged most of its characters' names from there. (O'Hara's the flat-topped midboss who replaced Abobo in the arcade DD2, again towering over the protagonist Lee).

Always a face I remember - my best friend's dad knew him personally via his work in youth martial arts, mentioned they'd shot Dragon to make Wall look a lot taller and midbossier than he really was. Was supposedly quite a short dude IRL. (then again buddy's old man is still like 6'10 in his eighties, haha)

EDIT: Aaand I fucked that riveting anecdote right up, it was Bolo Yeung (5'6) he was talking about WRT camera tricks. Wall was quite a bit taller than Lee (5'7), at 6'1.

Visual fix super Douglas Trumbull died several days ago  Most notable work is Blade Runner, and 2001. Apparently, a lot of the work Kubrick got credit for (erroneously?) was Trumbull’s work e.g., cockpit of ship, rotating hallway, other shit I can’t remember. This guys resume was nothing short of stellar.

Legend. Always sad to see those old master craftsmen pass on, but what a body of work to leave behind.
