Logic dictates the nature of the thread - information on reprinted goods - would potentially have hurt the values of all the kits he was 'sitting on' (his words), and therefore was not cool for broadcast. That's what I figured at the time, anyway.
Not TonK, the other people who were going on about what a shame it was to worry about such things, berating you for sharing the information, etc.

No chance.

Speaking as the greedy owner of a good ol' bootleg M92 board speaking who should've thought much harder before bidding...I'm only out $110 at worst though. :P

You were absolutely right about TonK; even before this latest crap it was clear that he wasn't out there for the community. It looks even more sinister with hindsight, though. I'm not used to seeing people argue like that while quite possibly not believing any of it (I do reserve the right to believe in man's ability to delude himself, though).

Well, it was really this that just smacked of "oh shit don't talk about reprinted art, shut it down now!"

And then his flagrant hypocrisy got too much for me, so I gave him both barrels.

Also, if you follow that thread and read only his responses, he seems seriously cut up/butthurt/tearful over the price of a rolled Progear poster that sold for $400 (GP's I think). He seems to reference it in every post for the first couple of pages. :|

Really? Don't remember that. Funny, considering the same one went for fucking 66,000 on YJ. The Yen was a bit weaker then, but not that week. It was closer to 100. Wonder how he would've handled the handful of Metal Slug 2 posters on Yahoo.

Hopefully the community has learned a few things over the years. Basically, no single person really knows what the going rates of this stuff is unless they look at a few places and gather data. Yahoo Japan is probably the best price guide out there as it has more of the stuff we're after readily available. At least for Japanese products, which is where most of the inquiries were coming from.

Even so, it only takes two people in the heat of the moment to jack something up to astronomical levels. A second one will often sell for WAY less. The 300,000 yen Canon Dancer is a prime example... the subsequent 250,000 yen one was there for months.

These are just fancy ways of saying, "something is worth what someone will pay". Ultimately, if you have a problem with a price, don't pay it. That's all you can do.

Just check the linked thread, it's all there. Not sure why he was so sore over that particular poster/price point.

This. Ebay's drop dead auction ending time is silly after seeing the way Yahoo does it (like a real auction where continuous bidding keeps the auction alive). I still lol when people are trying to snipe me on YAJ.

At $600 a pop, that refund will be a long time coming. You can get multigame MVS boots for about $60. AES or not, it's basically the same thing.

Scammers suck, but it's insane to think that people actually fell for it. The back story about the "discovery" of the carts is just implausibly bad, I've received million dollar offers from my long lost Nigerian half-twin that were more legitimate sounding. It's pretty mindblowing that someone would shell out tens of thousands of dollars for one, especially considering how rampant bootleg Neo Geo stuff is.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Nigerian scam emails are actually written to give themselves away. This weeds out all but the most gullible readers.

It always struck me as odd that these carts came from some "Ex-SNK Employee" who couldn't be identified. But I bet anyone who tried to reasonably say anything contrary to the popular belief there would have been crucified in minutes.

The only reason Shawn made a rare forum appearance was to get his piece. The only reason he gave a shit about the whole thing was for money, which is par for the course.

haha no need to be coy, I did try reading it from the start, but I honestly still didn't really understand it, something about a guy pretending or artifically making a NeoGeo cart seem ultra valuable or something?

A couple of US copies of Aero Fighters 3, which was never released as an AES game in the states, were "discovered" by "an ex-SNK employee" then sold for thousands on the NeoGeo forum. Of course, they turn out to be bootlegs and intertube shitstorm ensues.
