(Sigh) all I have are memories of some guys who opened an arcade on State Street in Madison Wisconsin USA back in 2002? 2003? They had a great collection of quality games and pinball, including Black Knight 2000 and an imported Strider 2. I didn't realize it at the time, but I heard the death knell for this place shortly after discovering it when I heard some guys checking out the Strider 2 and talk about getting a roll of quarter and beating it in one mega-feed session. $10 in one night versus who knows how much money over a few months of mastering it properly? They closed after one heroic year. It didn't help that their quarter machine was perennially on the fritz.

This was before I got seriously into shmups so I don't recall if they even had any. I remember they had Tempest, does that count?

Wow, never heard of Yestercade before, I'll have to check that out next time I go down to the beach. 8 is alright, nice arcade but I didn't like where it was located.

Best arcades around here are sadly all gone or now have a terrible selection of games, the only halfway decent ones are down at the shore.

Some of the best local indie arcades in the Modesto, CA area have long since closed their doors back in the mid-1980s into the mid-to-late 1990s:

Game Station Arcade #1 & #2: The second location was still around in the early 1990s and had a couple of arcade shmups like Silk Worm and Aero Fighters. The first location had Sinistar, Defender, Stargate, etc. The secondary location is the one that even had the rare arcade TurboGrafx-16 Jamma conversion kit with Blazing Lazers (aka PC Engine Gunhed) up & running for a short period of time.

Cals-R-Cade: this particular indie arcade had some cool arcade shmups from time to time like Konami's A-Jax, Twin Cobra, UFO Robo Danguard, etc. back in the mid-to-late 1980s. Up on the ceiling, they even had a rare Interstellar LD arcade promo poster for all to see but they never did get such an Interstellar cab in for their arcade patrons to play. Would've been cool if they did so.

Regency Game Palace: this was a franchised arcade but it, too, was well stocked with some cool arcade shmups: Raiden II, Midnight Wanderers (shmup from 3 Wonders CPS1 setup), Galaga (with rapid-fire option from the get-go), Turbo Force (with three player setup!), Space Fortress Macross (the USA version from Fabtek arcade distro), Data East's Vapor Trail, etc. Sadly, the RGP arcade shut down in July of 1994 due to all the rampant drug dealings going inside during that period in time.

Tilt!: this was another one of those franchised arcades that was hosted inside the Vintage Faire Mall. The original location was upstairs next to an A&W resturant back in the early '80s. They had all of the great classic early '80s arcade shmup staples like Centipede, Millipede, Vanguard, Gyruss, Tempest, Defender, Stargate, Time Pilot '84, Xevious, Time Soldier, Galaxian, Galaplus (aka Galaga 3 in some arcades), Raiden II, etc. It moved to it's secondary location within the mall right next to JCPennys on the second floor area in 1999-2000 and lastly, to it's third and final retail location downstairs. It eventually shut down due to the leasing rents getting too expensive in the mid-2000s. Tilt! was the awesome place to be during the Golden Age of the arcades indeed.

Chuck E. Cheese's: this was, again, another franchised pizzeria/arcade joint that had brought in an ultra-rare deluxe sit-down cab of Funai's Interstellar LaserDisc arcade shmup in 1984...I've never seen such a sit-down based Interstellar cab since then. Legendary sit-down cab indeed.

Putt-Putt Golf: this was a minature golf joint that had some cool arcade games and pinball machines including Galaga, Gyruss, Fighter And Attacker, etc. The current Funworks joint had a single cab with Dimahoo up & running some time back (but it was just for a short while never to appear ever again).

There was another franchised arcade by the name of Camelot Park: they carried some arcade shmup titles like 19XX, Air Buster, Twin Eagle II, Galaga, Raiden II, Super Galaxian, etc.

The premire indie arcade hangout called The Electric Underground in 1994 had gotten in Strikers 1945, Donpachi (in 1995), Viper Phase 1 U.S.A. (in '95), Outzone, Raiden Fighters, Raiden II, Blazing Star and the odd-ball shmup title of Dooyong's R-Shark. It moved to it's secondary location under the new name of Nickel Play on McHenry in 1996 until it finally shut their doors for good in May of 1998 due to their business lease ending.

So yeah, the Modesto, CA area had it's fair share of some cool and, sometimes rare, arcade shmup titles to play back in the day. The thing about Raiden II, it was easily featured in no less than four different arcades in the Greater Modesto area back in early to mid-1990s.

More relevant to this thread though, my recent bachelor party was at Dave & Buster's.

Many shots were had and plenty of rounds of Pac-Man Battle Royale were won and lost.

I also need to get myself back to Playdium in the near future. Wednesdays after 4pm it's $22 for 4 hours unlimited, and Saturdays after 4pm it's $25 for the same. Sounds like a good time to me 8)

It's been said that there were 20,000+ arcades spread throughout the USA in 1982. Gives you an idea of just how huge it was back in the Golden Age of the Arcades. When I stop to ponder, Atari was just based out of Sunnyvale, CA (then relocated to Milpitas) with their arcade coin-op division easily. Not to mention Capcom USA and SNK being based in Silicon Valley later on. Can't forget Cinematronics being based in the Silicon Valley as well.

The American arcade Funai subsidairy, of all places, was based out of Las Vegas when they decided to release their slick arcade LD shmup title of Interstellar in both upright and deluxe sit-down cab versions in 1984.

There was a decent arcade at seaside. I can't remember which game room it was in. Nothing modern but it was surprisingly "big"

I miss arcades. I remember we had prime time playhouse in our mall in Rockaway. Then there was that one in the Montville Area that spanned 3 stories. Used to have my Birthday's there. Free gaming for 3 hours.

I'll add that to my list of places to take some pics and stuff for this thread.

We had some big arcades in my town from the mid 80s when I discovered arcades till early 2000s when they all went belly up.

Now I have two options in my area. (Vejle, Denmark)

Option 1: (10min drive)
Legelandet (Play Land) an indoor kids playground with big slides, rodeo bulls, crane machines, sumo suit arena, bouncy castles and an arcade area. Theres an entry fee and they have a selection of arcade machines, mostly big racing machines, and all are set to free play. Some machines, especially the pinball machines, are in bad shape. But thats to be expected when kids in the age from 3-14 (primarily) wreak havoc on them. But when I take my kids there and can usually escape to the arcade area for a few mins to play a few games. Think it would look wrong coming to that place alone with no kids :?

Don't have any pictures but shot a video a couple of months ago.
Legelandet (Play Land) walkthrough (shakycam edition)

List of games available there:
Cruis 'n USA
Mortal Kombat II
Outrunners
Super Sprint
Neo Geo 4 slot in a Dansih JK Kabinet
- Thrash Rally
- Fatal Fury
- Super Sidekicks 2
- Ghost Pilots
Final Fight in a Danish Fantasy Game kabinet
Judge Dredd
Revenge from Mars (Pinball)
Terminator 2: Judgement Day (Pinball)
Cue Ball Wizard (Pinball)
3x LCD med iCade 60in1 PCB
Indy 500
2x Sega Rally Championship
Ridge Racer
Crypt Killer
Police Trainer
Prop Cycle
Alpine Racer
Tekken 3
Virtua Cop 2
Time Crisis
Suzuka 8 hours
Space Gun
Virtua Fighter
Super Chase
Asterix
Sunset Riders (out of order)
Revolution X
Virtua Striker
Tekken Tag Tournament
Savage Reign
Cruis 'n USA (1p sitdown)
Cyber Cycles

No shmup love besides Ghost Pilot and the ones available on the iCade 60in1s. But its marketed towards families and you can rent the place for birthdays etc.

Option 2: (1 hour drive) the arcade museum. Supposed to be the largest privately owned selection of arcade games and hardware in nothern europe? The 2 guys running it are struggling to get the government to fund it as a preservation of danish popculture. Right now everything they do they pay out of their own pocket and the work is put in, in their spare time. Entry is free but machines cost money, just like a real arcade. They have dedicated machines and also Danish manufactured standard jamme cabinets.
The machines are in pretty good condition and are regularly maintained by the two owners/operators. I've only encountered 2 problems in the many times I've been there. 1st was when Galaga didn't give me a credit when I dropped the coin and the other was the player 2 stick on Pang not working. They have a great selection of games and I go there 3-4 times a year.

GP: You ever go to Crystals Pizza in Irving back in the day?
Fuck yeah I did! I think so -- actually I thought it was Arlington. Shit was dope. Loved pounding pizza and playing games.

If you want dingy, not exactly a mom & pop place (more run by a dirty old man or two) is Shibuya Kaikan.

Dark: Check
Dingy: Check
Stale Cigarette Smoke & Yellow Walls: Oh, good lordy, Check

Only problem is the top floor which used to be retro, and the 4th floor which had all the Cave games has been amalgamated and is on B1. 50 yen though. Can't miss it.

I've always toyed w/ getting a wide angle lens and taking some photos of these places but never got around to it. Just not in them any more.

I went to 3 of these smaller arcades today and one of them did have SDOJ in a cab. I'll post about that one later. The Japanese STG wiki puts the total number of locations in all of Japan that have SDOJ at exactly 100. However, some of the larger places like HEY have 3 cabs running it. I'd love to know the total number of SDOJ kits around the world. I know there were at least 125 sold, so that puts CAVEs total haul at more than $300,000. Of course manufacturing and development fees would have to be subtracted from that.

I think these smaller arcades are on their way out which is why I'm trying to document them now. I had plans to go to 7 game centers today (Ueno / Nippori area), but 4 of them have already closed. :| I'm going to try to hit the Edogawa area tomorrow, and then part of Chiba early next week.
I can't believe how out in the open and prevalent these xxx-in-1 PCBs are. I went to an arcade today that had a 2000-in-1 PCB.. That's the highest number I've ever seen.

I love Mikado (as I've already documented elsewhere). Granted I didn't get the chance to check out a few other places folks mentioned in the past, but this place, in my opinion, wipes the floor with HEY! et al.

Plus Mikado is home to INH and Heavy Metal Raiden, which is just mega excellent brilliant awesome anyway... and their entrance is crowded with about 907,000 varieties of Darius cabinets. :D

It was located in a forgotten city of Italy, rather than Tokyo, but it was a lovely place, with tons of great arcade games, a great crowd (I mean, even the usual junkies were nice!), and tons of old cabs. It was modeled after Flynn's Arcade, to give an idea. I am authorized to do so...when I go back home and be able to scan the pictures? ;)
It'd be cool to see some pics of your uncle's arcade, Randorama. The original Flynn's in the movie, Tron, was just a rented out building converted into a temporary arcade.

Even in the indepently produced 1983 film of "Joysticks", the inside of the arcade scenes was a rented out wherehouse filled with the latest arcade games cabs from 1982 (they were rented from local arcade distros in the area & had to be returned when filming was finished). It was shot on location in Los Angeles in a mere three weeks (on a $300,000 shoestring budget) in '82 and released nationwide in 1983 (once a proper film distributor was found, hence the '83 copyright/release date). It was the #1 movie at the U.S. box office when it debuted. There were no improvised scenes whatsoever & it was filmed according the script (as not to go overbudget). There was no money to pay the arcade game manufacturers to show their arcade IPs in the film...they were asked if their arcade games could be filmed for free as another form of in-house free advertising, otherwise, the film wouldn't have been made period. As for Bally Midway MFG Co., they were more than happy to showcase their latest arcade game title of Super Pac-Man that got top billing towards the end of the film -- again, free promotional advertising within the film. All the music & background songs within the film were original & written especially for it. To this very day, Joysticks remains the only big-screen film to portray the American arcades from that "Golden Age of Arcades" era. No other indy or major film production studios bothered to cash in on the arcade craze going on at that particular point in time. Sad but true.

For some odd reason, to play the latest pinball machines, a visit to the Yosemite Bowling Alley in Modesto, CA does the trick indeed.

Awesome thread Rancor, I'm excited to hear about other old arcades you stumble across, thanks very much for sharing. :D

I love the anticipation of not knowing what games and cabs await inside. Every so often you stumble across something that completely blows you away, it's brilliant these places still exist.

That Game Inn First looks familier, I think I used to see it from the train on my way to Aki?

Thanks for the kind words! I have several more arcades already "in the chamber" ready to post about, I just don't want to do everything at once.
I know what you're speaking of, and I love that feeling as well - the wondering of what's inside. I was completely taken aback when I went into the stationery store and saw the Domy cabs.. You just don't see those anywhere anymore. 99% of these places have Egrets, Astro City's, New Astro City's, and Blast City's.. To see unusual cabs such as a Pony or a Mini-Cute just completely makes my day.

I don't think you would have seen Game Inn from the tracks considering that the tracks run directly over it! It is literally under the Yamanote line, and there was a deafening roar in the place every 2-3 minutes when another train rolled over the top. If you walked around the Okachimachi at all you may have seen it - it's about a 1 minute walk from that station.
