For season 1, I kinda agree. But season 2 really only got better and better.

The soldiers of the United Nations International Taskforce under the command of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart appear to be completely useless. They lack even the most rudimentary knowledge about combat. In one scene the Brigadier walks into a room where he heard gunshots coming from (right after having shot a man to death and witnessing numerous other deaths around him) and his pistol was completely lowered as he clumsily walked into a room where he should have realistically expected someone to be waiting in ambush. I've seen a total of two shootout scenes that both take place in warehouses, and I can't help but think how fucked UNIT would be if they had to go up against Clarence Bodicker and his goons.

Been watching The Expanse, it's pretty good!

Season 1 is rather slow and gloomy, serving only as an introduction to the bigger plot and characters, but I'm nearing the end of season 2 which's been a very pleasant ride so far.

If you're looking for serious space pulp fix, this is much better than Discovery, I'm impressed.

Why isn't that show more popular ? it's quality and I'm glad they have a 4th season planned.
Maybe people didn't like the dark mood of the first season and quit, dunno. It sure isn't comedy, but that's a plus.

Game of Thrones seems to have gone back to what it originally was before last season's "summer blockbuster every episode extravaganza". I'm all for the buildup, so have been enjoying it (even though there's a bit of schmaltz). Apparently episode 3 will be a barn burner though.

While the last series was pretty bad, the first episode of series 8 of GoT has gone beyond 'fanfiction' to 'unconcealed cynicism'. Every line is written to be encoded as a subtitled .gif on some appalling Twitter fetish account. The romantic dragon flight montage was so cringe inducing my anus actively formed an event horizon. Having just finished the last series of The Sopranos the difference in quality is shocking. Its less a TV show than a collection of pandering affectations.

Looking forward to episode 2.

The Expanse is phenomenal. Syfy killed it after the 3rd season but a community movement got it picked up by Amazon.

Rubicon - Rewatched. Slow burning paranoid thriller. Nice filler before the last season of Mr. Robot starts. Recommended for fans of Pakula's Political Paranoia trilogy.
Utopia - See above.

There's been a mountain of English sitcoms on Hulu lately. Some are new, some I've rewatched.

Spaced
Faulty Towers
Black Books
Peep Show
Only Fools and Horses
Detectorists

From what I've seen around the interwebs (not a hell of a lot, but I do watch mindless Youtube shit on the treadmill) nobody gave episode 1 a pass for the cheesy shit (the dragon flight being the nadir of the season). I'm just taking the good w/ the bad. There's plenty of good... definitely some bad, but I guess them's the breaks when something gets this big. I think there are two pretty obvious chinks in the armor here: 1) some of the main actors are pretty meh, and 2) once again, some elements feel a bit rushed.

Black Summer (Netflix)

This is the zombie show I've always wanted (almost).

Very little dialogue, characterisation built through what they do, not what they say. No long conversations about feelings and all that crap that weighed down TWD. Zero sentimentality, it's bleak and anyone can die. I think there was one episode where no one talked. The different characters were all good and I was routing for them. Great scenes of chaos and panic, a lot of it shot and cut in real time.

A couple of bad things - the zombies are more like rabid animals. They seem to have a tiny bit of intelligence in terms of who they chase after, and they run. There are a few sequences where characters are trying to hide from a zombie or two. These scenes can go on a bit, but only because they're treating it realistically. You spend time with a character terrified, waiting, hoping for the zombie to fuck off. There's also a crap bit in a school, but that's about it.

It drops you straight in to the early part of the zombie outbreak. Not much is explained, everyone is trying to survive and they're all pushed to breaking point. No laughs, no comedy. Just gruelling and realistic.

I loved it. My gf not so much, but she's not a huge zombie fan.

Turns out it's a spin off from Z Nation. I tried watching that and thought it was pretty crap. This is completely different in tone. Best zombie show I've seen by a long shot.

Nice endorsement, I'll have to check this out. What you described is the zombie vibe I seek too. I thought the first season of TWD captured that really well, before descending into progressively sillier melodrama.

Yeah, the first season of TWD was pretty good. I think in part it was because it was only a short season and there was a lot of progression from one area to the next. I think with these types of shows I always want the situation to be the main thing, and how the characters deal with it. That usually gets flipped on it's head when the showrunners get a hit.

With Black Summer there may even be a little dig at that type of thing. There are a couple of conversations, one in the first episode particular and I thought, oh shit, here we go again, more reflection. But it wasn't like that at all.

There's actually an interesting behind-the-scenes story about why TWD took a nosedive. Essentially most of the cast and crew were working for below-par pay because Frank Darabont was such a fun guy to work with, which is why the show looked so much better than you'd expect for its budget. Then AMC for some reason shitcanned Darabont and suddenly all these cast and crew were trapped in a low-pay job with some new asshole. Which is why so many of the main cast got killed off suddenly in the second season, so their actors could run, RUN away from this now-crappy deal.

I might have mentioned this before but I couldn't even finish the first episode of TWD, just awful. So if it gets worse from there...

Edit: The Expanse is in fact very good. I hate to be that guy (actually I love being that guy) but if you like books, definitely check out the books too!

Black Summer

The first few episodes are decent but it quickly spirals out of control.

- Grocery stores chock full of food and at the exact same time there's a Lord of the Flies scenario brewing on the local school 100 yards away.
- Rave/Drug/Prostitution clubs. Very confusing.
- Character gives 2-minute sob story in Korean and everyone (none of whom speak Korean) is reduced to tears. Throughout the show, despite her not speaking English and no other character speaking Korean, there's no communication barrier.. it's bizarre.
- Characters that don't shut the door behind them.
- Characters that don't lock the door behind them in the rare event they do shut the door.
- Characters that refuse to shoot the Zombies in the head.

Most of these are minor complaints but they quickly escalate to a mountainous heap.
However, I did appreciate the attempt at creating an atmosphere that revolved around societal collapse and human depravity; the monsters aren't the Zombies, but your neighbor.

The gf liked it though. *shrug*

Can I spoil GoT?

Spoiler: show
Holy shit was the Night King a massive disappointment. In a series based around nobody being fully good or evil, here comes Skeletor. With even less personality.

Fucking Unicron in Transformers: The Movie was better developed with a more satisfying arc.

I mean yeah, but like
Spoiler: show
it was pretty fucking crazy, though, no? It's no secret that we're in full Hollywood cliche mode now. There is no source material left, and the main writer is the guy who wrote the 2004 Brad Pitt movie Troy. It's not going to get any smarter from here on out, so all we can really do is enjoy the ride. Last night was a hell of a ride.

Spoiler: show
The show should have gone on a indeterminate hiatus until the 6th book was released. The 'ride' nosedived off a precipice that used to be plot.
Just about every main character donned plot armor so thick it was evident they'd make it out unscathed, e.g. Sam squirming on a bed of wights.
Btw, there's a colossal amount of source material that's never been used. For the thousands of pages of said source material that was used, and 7+ years building up to this moment?
Westeros' greatest threat squashed in a single episode!!

Fully agree with Rapoon here. It's a disservice to Martin (who hates fan fiction btw lolol) but people are mostly eating it up.

I thought it was a messy episode, and I guess it was tough to direct with so many things going on at once, but ultimately it wasn't very well handled. The grading was utter shite. Way too dark. Whoever worked out the tactics for fighting the walkers was an idiot. And it does that thing which all tv shows do... have a montage in slow motion with plinky plonk piano music to be all emotional. Terrible.

I'm not bothered with
Spoiler: show
the Night King being offed. My girlfriend said just before it started that she thought it would end this episode. I can see why the writers did this because most fans of the show love the characters, not a slow approaching cold death thing. It's too abstract. It's a good source of motivation, but the thing itself is one dimensional. Or at least that's how the writers have treated it, not sure about the books as I haven't read any of them.

There were some good moments, Aria in the library was proper zombie terror, the crypt, the dragons above the clouds. But yeah, way too much plot armour going on in the last two seasons, especially this episode. They should have killed one of the big hitters. The white Walkers should have wrecked them. Aria jumping out of nowhere for the kill was cheap as chips.

However, I was engrossed, so you know, roll on episode 4.

Got ep. 3.

Need i repeat what's already been said?

The only thing that can now happen with this show's last breath, is for the writers to have been so clever (and smart) as to completely subvert all our expectations and go for an amazing, creative, mind bending, deeply personal revelation that will turn everything upside down and leave us wondering if we are worthy to witness such greatness... yeah.

Robert and Ned made a deal with the Faceless to stage their deaths. All that time the two assholes have been touring brothels around the world and raising a thousand dragon cubs in a remote secret valley.
They finally return and burn the shit out of everyone alive or dead who's not happy the intolerable boomers are taking their thrones back.
Game over.

Maybe not the best word choice. Perhaps I could have went with insult instead. You are right that it was a business transaction and going as planned. The overall point remains the same: the writing is lazy. Who knows what he even thinks about it, he's pretty old at this point.

I love the show overall, and I'm to keep watching until it's over anyway. Just to be clear.

Anyone who read the books can tell GRRM nuked his own story burying the main plot deep under loads of unnecessary additional characters and subplots, which after publication he would be forced to find a use for, simultaneously to attempting to resurrect the already decaying main story.
And upon contemplating the clusterfuck he probably realized he was too old for that shit...

GOT stuff.

Spoiler: show
Boy, that Arya Stark sure is something else, innit she?

I'm glad all the stuff with the White Walkers is over with because now we can properly focus on Cersei, who in my mind is show's most intriguing villain. It's almost a little hard to imagine that something the show has been building into ever since the very first scene has now resolved. Yeah, I get that it was a bit improbable the way Arya was able to slip by all those wrights and white walkers unnoticed, but it was just so incredibly well directed that I couldn't help getting swept up with an overwhelming surge of emotion. I loved it.

Until now, I wanted Arya to murder Cersei, but I think she's already solidified her place as the show's most badass heroine. Let someone else have the honour. Keeping the green eyes prophecy in mind, I figure she's still probably going to kill Cersei.

I don't know where Mischief Maker got the impression that the show was based on nobody ever being truly good or evil. Ramsay and Joffrey are purely evil in every sense possible. I've always considered the show's central theme being that your surname and social status don't determine your inner character and destiny.
