TV you've just watched

Post by GaijinPunch »

It's summer now, so very little new is on. A time of reruns and catching up.

I finally got around to watching The Shield, and am enjoying it. Not that much longer to go, really. It's not as good as The Wire, but very little, if anything is.

Mad Men Season 5 was great. The fashion has started to get a little funky, and the mid to late 60's are simply far more interesting than the early 60's. AFAIK they are signed on for 2 more seasons, then it's bye bye.

Only thing on the radar now is Breaking Bad Season 5 which starts in 2 weeks.

I just catch stuff randomly, can't usually commit to TV series unless I have a DVD to work through. That said I did watch The Apprentice through (the UK one, not that horrific US version.)

Currently watching The Inbetweeners, had a Jerry Springer rerun on in the background earlier, and Dave are doing nightly double bills of Peep Show.

That's about it for me.

I have news channels running constantly. The cable service was out for almost a week, so I popped in the second season to Three's Company and had that whole thing running in a loop 8)

Image

The first coupla years were really good, esp. Chrissy's character, which was more subdued and smart. Later on, her character took a 180-degree change and became more slapstick and dumbed down. The worst were seasons 5 and 6 with Cindy - those were just godawful. Had that happened nowadays, it woulda been cancelled and we'd have missed the Terri years, which were also good because she was slapstick, but smart 8)

Those legs... they go on for daze 8)

Good lordy... putting Peep Show in the same post as that other crap? Heresy.

EDIT: Terri got me the hardest out of those three.

I've pretty much stopped watching TV to the point of letting my brother move the Dish Network cable from my bedroom to his (he watches more stuff than I ever do). There's just nothing relevant to my interest anymore, save for Adult Swim and Comedy Central stuff. Daytime Cartoon Network is fine, too, if Regular Show or Adventure Time is on.

I do like to keep up with current events, so I just use Bloomberg, Reuters, and Weather.com websites for that.

I did watch The Breakfast Club on my parents' new flat-screen in our living room today, though. Good movie.

I watch the same channels and shows, but I keep the cable service since it's the only way to get reception here and I split it with the other people in the house, so it's less than 20 bucks a month. For a bit, I was thinking of getting off cable and doing the same thing with websites, but it'd be too much of a hassle and my computer is too old to stream things quickly.

I think The Inbetweeners only works if you were a kid in a UK school. It's really impossible to relate otherwise.

It's all crap though really, I don't turn on the TV expecting to find much else.

I watched the new Alan Partridge last week and thought it was pretty good. Not classic, but lovely stuff. Coming from Norfolk there's always that extra bit of interst in the Partridge.

This led me to download those Mid Morning Matters shorts. All through the Euros I've been shouting "FRIKER!"

Despise television programming, but I watch True Blood for the constant tease of Jessica nudity.

TV is higher caliber than cinema these days. Check out Children's Hospital for some serious laughs. I rank it up there with Peep Show.

Jessica will never be nude, so there is absolutely no reason to watch True Blood...

I've been slowly working my way through early Law and Order. I wish Moriarty would have stayed, I'm really liking him as the prosecutor. Maybe I'll feel otherwise after four seasons.

I wish the UK version was available for streaming on Netflix, I'm curious about what it's like.

I've also been watching How I Met Your Mother with my brothers. Not many good laughs, but it's enjoyable enough to watch with people.

Those were the best Law & Order seasons, but I also liked the Chris Noth and Jerry Orbach detective episodes. Anything with angie harmon and benjamin bratt is unwatchable.

Just saw the season finale of Legend of Korra.

Jeez, that was way dark. Even for this show. I'm amazed that got through on Nick.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Been watching Life On Mars again. Utterly superb, best thing on British TV in last ten years and Gene Hunt is the best TV policeman ever. Of course, our Cousins had to have their own version, which apart from being atrocious, also had no concept of irony.

The spin-off show with a female cop was decent as well.

Ashes To Ashes wasn't quite as dark, but still better than 99% of TV, and the finale was enjoyably batshit.

I just finished the first season of Shameless (US version), which was pretty good. Yes, it finished a while ago, but I watch everything through Netflix, so I'm perpetually a season behind. I'm sure someone will say the UK version is better, though. I did watch the first episode of the UK version since it was available on streaming, and it was almost identical. I wonder how much they'll diverge over time.

I've been working my way through the first season of Sliders. The acting is just terrible at times (aside from John Ryes-Davies), but the alt-history plots are fantastic. Shame the series was so badly mishandled by the network. Episodes were aired out of order so I've had to use Wikipedia to figure what episodes comes after what. On the plus side most of the episodes are on US Netflix, so that's making life easy.

Speaking of US Netflix, anyone who wants to see a version of Netflix outside their region, watch Video on iPlayer outside of the UK, or just watch a lot of major sites that region restrict video should check out Unblock-Us. I've been using their service for about a year and it's been fantastic. Don't understand how they're doing it, but there's no proxy configuration involved, just point your device to their DNS servers and go. Costs $5/month, but for access to iPlayer from Canada, that's made it completely worthwhile to me. They also recently added the option to switch between the US, UK and Canadian versions of Netflix so you can view their full library.

I still wouldn't call it fantastic. Less dramatic than the US version and Lord Alan Sugar is better than Trump for sure, but it's still not exactly entertaining television.

Yeah welcome to the places of my life was great. Again, as a Norfolk type I had a vested interest in it.

I frickin love Alan. I understand Iannucci and co. would only do another show if the format changed slightly, so it didn't get tired. Mid Morning Matters had a slightly fresh approach, and worked well for me. Not seen this new docu-Alan yet, but looking forward to catching it at some point!

It all comes down to what you want to watch. For me I love British TV to iPlayer access is a god send. And the fact it's not a proxy so there's no network speed drop is really nice. They have a week free trial that's worth it if you get curious.

Glad to see I'm not the only one of Alan's Internet DiscipleS on the forum! Watched the new special yesterday, liked it enough. Felt a bit familiar, but pleasantly so. A creation as potently unpleasant as Alan Gordon Partridge can get away with wheeling out a greatest hits set occasionally.

MMM surprised me, though. The limited production values really focused the writing, with some priceless neurotic Alan turns on a par with anything from The Day Today onward. I was pissed off to see it's no longer on Youtube so I downloaded the lot and stuck it in my TV folder with KMKYWAP, IAP1 and IAP2. Cashback!

Modern TV (I stopped watching in the early 90's) is a new thing to me. Guess it started with Firefly and new Doctor Who, but those are sort of sci fi exceptions. Started watching Breaking Bad (just the pilot) and am really impressed. Takes the idea of a full length movie (that I often have too short an attention span for these days) and instead serves up a small entertaining bite. Clever but not blowing its whole load. It seems something happened in the early 00's (starting with The Wire?) and TV started becoming a much higher production with all the talent going there instead of hollywood? Hmmm...

Anyway, I know I should see The Wire and I've head Mad Men is good. What TV is really outstanding?--not episodic sitcom bullshit like what I saw back in the 70's-90's. A friend loaned my the first copy of Falling Skies, which is back to sci fi and may not be great, but I'm sort of obligated to watch it and I can always get drunk while doing so.

Oh and as said in the movie thread (but should have gone here): Legend of Korra is fucking great. Can't wait for season 2.
