Cobra Kai

My wife has been watching this, and I can sort of understand the rationale behind revisiting The Karate Kid (basically something along the lines of "Ralph Macchio and William Zabka need a new swimming pool"), but the sheer number of people in this who have basically let their entire lives be completely defined by some meaningless Karate tournament that happened 38 years ago makes this whole thing just come across as depressing.

The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey

With only one episode left, this show is amazing. Samuel L Jackson needs to win an Emmy or something for this.

I'll do that. It was fun after all. Those full boobs...

But concerning your spoiler: It didn't get by me, and it's pretty well laid out. But to resolve the whole case and mark it down for the not-so-good guys, the showpeople invent this supercreep and I found it disappointing in background and origin. The season is almost mythical in scope and it comes down to this. The supermax climax. Evil is man. Man can be stopped. :x

One of the main characters was as disappointed as you for the exact same fact though --- I think by definition you can't be, no?

The line about the light was a bit too much but I think it was a way to put a note of finality on these characters.

Moon Knight
Spoiler
It's pretty good so far, but I found it a bit annoying that they are playing up the split personality angle of the story so hard. Also Oscar Isaacs isn't exactly blowing me away. Ethan Hawke and the supporting actress are killing it though.
Jack Reacher

Never saw the Com Truise movie, so I have no comparison. Good action sequences, I like the fights and all the eye gouging and stuff. It's great fun. So far the only real issue I'm having with it is lackluster bad guys. I can in no way ever take Bruce McGill seriously as a bad guy after a whole childhood watching him as the goofball in MacGyver. Also don't really love Currie Graham as Kliner, just doesn't feel right in the role to me.

Saw the most recent Swamp Thing series, or what is known of it. Being cancelled after 4 eps it's only one season with 10 total. The suits, man, were at it again. Sensing quality in irrational manner and being on a kick with the character in comics I was eager to see it. It's a guy in a suit after all, no digital critter. Gotta love that. For what it is I had fun with it. Sure it's open-ended as fudge and I would've want more. For fans of the green giant it's bittersweet. Still watching on SD media, I am nonplussed with the obviously digital material and it's strange imagery. I won't get used to it.

Red Dwarf

Man, for years I'd been hearing about this show as some Douglas Adams-style hidden gem. Now that I've seen it... ugh.

It's terrible imitation Douglas Adams. The characters get into situations you might see in an Adams book, but the jokes are almost always duds. I binged through to the third season just to see if it ever gets good, and the only time I really had a laugh was the visual gags when they went to reverse-time Earth.

The one thing I legit loved about the show was how the theme song morphs from lonely and foreboding in the opening credits to a goofy pop ditty in the end credits. Then season 3 comes around and they drop the dark intro.

Disappointing.

I love Red Dwarf for the nostalgia it evokes for me. I watched it when it came out. It was on *very* late at night on public television where I grew up. It was like peering into a different world of nerdy British sci-fi stuff at a time when there wasn't much to consume over here. I'm not sure what I would think of it watching it now for the first time, but it still makes me laugh now, so I guess different strokes and all that.

Starting to worry about the boys at RedLetterMedia. Why do they keep watching episodes of Picard? I don't like it when my imaginary friends hurt themselves >_<

Feeling a little down on The Orville. It's just tough to keep caring about something for so long; I think the wait for Season 3 is comparable to the amount of time millennials had to wait for Star Wars Episode 1 at this point.

I think it's kind of cute as social commentary. All of these zombie franchises that are past their expiration date not being allowed to die, it's like it's saying "we're all Al Bundy!"

I don't envy the writers though: starting someone off as a loser starting from zero is just easier to have an actual arc that goes somewhere, and makes it easier to slowly introduce new characters as their contact circle expands. Like that new Ghostbusters movie that was made around 26 years too late, what do you even do with a time chasm like that? Without making the characters unrecognizable?

WTF. No real attachment to the movie myself (Capcom's rather nice AC and FC games, OTOH, are quite bangin') but uh.

We're officially old farts now I suppose, late 80s is officially ancient history. 3; Am I nuts or did The Dark Crystal get some kind of revisit not long ago? I'm not gonna go look. Actual footage of a zombie ambushing me while I read up on the Willow TV thing.

edit: having safely camped out next to my big buff gay bro, I see it wasn't the dementia talking! Sadly, the first article I saw on the Dark Crystal TV series trumpeted the actress who played Missandei in Game Of Thrones - a character who might be described as the burrito that blew the fat venal capitalist's sphincter, causing that once-beloved series to shit itself and die in a bed of corn-ridden faeces. So first impressions ain't great. 3;

There was a Dark Crystal prequel show on Netflix, complete with new puppets because Netflix was still riding high on the bubble. In many ways an improvement on the original, except for its overreliance on swooping CGI shots that took away from the otherwise gorgeous practical effects on display.

Myself, I threw my back out this last week and spent an inordinate amount of time on the couch watching random shit, and I made the mistake of watching the pilot to the original 80s Voltron. I was obsessed with that show as a kid, and I think the art still holds up, but wow. I was getting flashbacks to watching Speed Racer on Mtv "ironically" given all the useless filler dialog to fill in the unedited talking animations from the Japanese raw footage, read by actors with distinct voices but no idea the emotional tone the scene was supposed to be going for. You can't go home.

Quality, but ends on a cliffhanger that will never be resolved.

(Then again it is a prequel, so it's not that hard to fill in the blanks).

Making prequels is probably a good insurance policy, tha bidness being what it is. 3; At least when the bean counters' axe inevitably falls you're not left at a total loose end.

I was about to say that prequels bring their own set of issues, but I suspect a writer who'd make a mess within prequel parameters (the long-awaited BIGGU DIKKU HARRORAN: DENSETSU no SHININGU CHEFFU) is probably not gonna do much better at the opposite end of the timeline. OZark - Very good throughout. Especially for a Netflix show.

Rerunning Game of Thrones on blu ray, because House of the Dragon premiers in Aug.

Red Dwarf started to get good for me on S4.

Sometimes I watch Black Mirror episodes. None have come out for a while, but the Twilight Zone format (every episode is different cast, story etc) is nice. Especially as the quality remains high. I did like the older seasons, but I felt Netflix did good with S4 onwards.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

My favorite show as a larvae was ThunderCats, a show more responsible for creating a generation of weebs and furries and furry weebs than anything. I'd sit down as it started, blink, and wonder where the previous 30 minutes went.

A story my father used to tell me: My grandfather would say something like "Did you watch some ThunderRats?" I'd get very cross as it was unforgivable for someone to misname something so important: "No grandpa, not ThunderRats, ThunderCats!" "Rats?" "Cats!" "Rats?" "Cats!" "..... Rats?"

At this point, I allegedly would get too mad to restrain myself, and bite his toe. I have no idea if this story is actually completely true, but it always sounded feasible enough to me.

I watched a few episodes of Real Ghostbusters (something I never liked back in the day, but what else was there on TV? Matlock wasn't on at that timeslot) and Extreme Ghostbusters (something new to me) over the past year, since GhostCorps has been putting them up for free on the youtube. Most of it is rather dire, but the good episodes were a little better than I remembered them.

The core issue is how these shows are written for five year old kids and younger, we're not their audience anymore. That they're scrubbed of any awesome violence (so many awful old people hated Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers), and anything else doesn't help either.

It's still fun watching those Youtube clips of Speed Racer being an absolute sociopath.

Oh, at least kids these days at least get decent voice actors and coherent writing and theme songs that aren't just the name of the show repeated aggressively on repeat consistently. You can probably see a ton of comments in this Dragon Ball Kai comment section about their nostalgia growing up to this as a rugrat.

It does make me feel a little sad they didn't get to experience the same kinds of things we did, for good and bad. But on the whole I'm glad their #1 tv show didn't have to be Matlock.

Thundercats was awesome. Mumm-ra is an amazing bad guy and the whole fantasy world they created was mysterious and engrossing. I was a big cartoon consumer in the 80s, and my favorites shifted over time, but I think Transformers had to be my #1; I certainly was most crazy to collect their toys.

Recently started watching Better Call Saul. The first episode was a bit snoozy for the first half, but the skater con artists were hilarious and it got a lot better. Looking forward to seeing where they go.

Finished Stranger Things Season 4.

I still like the show (I didn't really like season 2 that much though), but it's got some problems. First off, it's not a very complete story like we had in the first, second and third seasons. This feels like a half a season of the show, not a full season. You might wonder (if you haven't seen it) why that's possible when the running time of the episodes is so long. Well that brings me to the other issues, which is that the plot is advancing at a snail's pace and they are regurgitating material. This is feeling like halfway through Dragon Ball Z at times.

Again, I more or less enjoyed what I saw, but they moved things along too slow, and then ended the season without any resolution for minor battles or relationship developments. They cliffhangered every plot line in the whole season and that's crap.

Ok. This explains a lot!

So I guess things will wrap up somewhat in july. Still though, I think it's really weird that they would hold-off on just two episodes like that. I've never encountered that before, so idk how I would be expected to know it. I suppose they just assume that everyone spends enough time on the internet to stumble across the info.
