When I worked for Vector Marketing, at the annual Houston +surrounding areas office group conferences, there was a motherfuck who looked EXACTLY LIKE DAVID SCHWIMMER who was FSM (Salesman, first class; the "SOLDIER of Shinra" of Cutco/Vector if you want a nerdy comparison.) for one of the offices. I was expecting him to open his mouth and start sounding exactly like Ross Gellar, but alas, close but no cigar.

I really can't stand Friends, when all is said and done. But I could appreciate that.

I also knew a guy that looked like David Schwimmer. The guy was totally clueless at work and we couldn't stand his nasal tone.

Dude, nothing could be farther from the truth. Not only are we not douchebags, but for not saying anything about it for a year or more, we deserve a medal for our toleration lasting this long. There aren't enough CGI rendered, blowing-bubbles-out-of-pussy-with-a-piccalo-playing-in-the-background moe girls in the world that could add up to 1/3rd of the annoyance of excessive use of ANY emoticon, whatsoever.

Sweet deal. Did you have a lot of connections to begin with, by any chance? In terms of people to nag, I mean. Even though I didn't do well at all there (but at the sales gig I did before that, with College Pro Painters, I was second only to my boss in number of sales for the summer), I acknowledge that their business model is genius, and only the best of the best will truly reap the benefits of what the job has to offer. So I just laugh at people who say "It's nothing more than a pyramid business model." ...Yeah, and?! lol. That's the whole point! Those who have the chops for it will get far, while anyone who is less than that will flounder at the bottom. In a way, the salesman chooses their level of success. But more than half the time, that entails psychological manipulation of the client to achieve desired results, especially after they've already said "no, now fuck off with your knives", which I always felt weird about. But I gotta hand it to those guys who can get the job done with 60% of all commission.

I started w/ friends and went from there. I never really considered it a pyramid scheme. They have a very solid product (and a reputation to match). The knives are a piece of cake to sell assuming you're not socailly inept.

I actually got pretty dang close to selling a 2,200 set (our Ultimate Set), but I let him talk it over with his dumb cunt of a wife first, which ended up killing his enthusiasm for the product due to her constant pressure on him to "consider their financial situation"...

My god, listen to how sociopathic I sound. How dare they live in a world outside of knives where other more important things have first priority. :|

Gaijin Punch, there's half truth to that. It's a numbers game. There will always, even among first class salesmen, be those people who you can't sway to buy, regardless of charisma (ask my former manager who made a shitload of money for a first year student in college, in spite of this). In fact, some of them have their defense up out of distrust against those who use it when trying to sell a product. The difference between myself and these men who deliver the same lines I do in more or less the same way and method is that they know how to get references like I never could. More presentation consenting references+ same confident and consistent delivery of material= more sales. If you don't have constant and new sources of references, it's like you're playing Kevorkian on the dying body that is your career. When the references end, so does the career. Of course, if you lack any social skills, you're basically fucked for any kind of sales. I had some sales, but they weren't nearly enough for the effort and zen-like patience I put in. When even friends and family were against giving me even one reference out of not wanting to "burden" their friends with marketing, I realized that I couldn't force them to write anything on that sheet. Well, more specifically, others can, I can't.

I was fucking crafty, though! I ended up in those last two weeks thinking outside the box and looking up randoms in the white pages who lived in my area (to save gas), and I even looked up their addresses in Google Earth to judge their income based on their homes, so I could narrow it down. (I'm pretty sure that's not legal, though.) It got old, fast.

But I'm blessed to be exceptionally gifted in other areas, so "giving up" in this one endeavor isn't so bad.

My manager did that. He randomly got a name out to show us how easy it was. He didn't get the appointment, but he bullshitted this lady on a cold call (out of the book), talked to her a bit, and was actually almost there. I was actually pretty impressed.

It was a fun summer -- we wrecked a hotel we had a convention in.

Heh, I sat down to watch only the first ep and ended up watching the entire first season. Took me about a week and a half to get through all four. Season 5 is airing as we speak.

8) is the emoticon for Max Headroom, in TV terms. I don't know about all this other stuff.

Speaking of annoying TV hosts, watching the TekWar pilot. Lol, falling for junk mail. So formulaic it hurts, but there was an explosion and lots of cheesy early 90s computer graphics. I wanted to look up some info on the bad guy BUT not spoil the fact that he's the first Tek Lord! Rats, a YouTube playthrough of the DOS game spoiled it. The game's sprite looks nothing like the actual TV character actor. Yes, I suppose kneeling slowly is a good way to portray somebody after being shot.

Things I am learning from TekWar:

- In the future... TVs will all have a Starfleet LCARS style border, and that might account for why people fall for terrible junk mail
- In the future... Credits for money (another Roddenberry universe holdover)
- In the future... Everything is made of plastic, and random battery shorts and fizzes are not uncommon even in "expensive" field chemical analysis tools (a kind of sonic screwdriver / rolling joke in this episode)
- In the future... Nobody leaves fingerprints, especially the cops
- In the future... You don't have any rights against unreasonable searches and seizures; Cardigan and co. break into a private dwelling without any obvious warrant
- In the future... Private citizens with no apparent authority (other than being the head of a company) can call for arrests and either have police officers reporting directly to them, or their own police forces.
- In the future... Bad guys are just as sleazy and transparent as in crappy '90s TV shows. Imagine that.
But! One nice discovery:
- In the future... Even on a futuristic elevated highway, you can hear the crickets

I'd make some observations about the architecture (heh) but the CG is grabbing my attention instead. Obligatory spiral staircase in the main man's apartment. It must be a pain to have to walk up and down that thing every time you want to go to the door.

Also, "Lt. Winger" looks like a Star Trek alien, a really ugly one with a horrible plastered-on haircut and I swear they've done something with skin make-up. I don't know if he's a good guy yet, but let me run this one past you: "[in a monotone] I don't guess. I employ deductive logic." Gee...that doesn't sound like any Star Trek character I know of.

And just when I think this might be predictable, sudden jump to a traditional New York style hotel restaurant exterior / interior shots, totally out of keeping with the world TekWar is trying to sell me on. Well, I guess it beats endless CG skyscrapers and futuristic campus locations.

I did the same thing. I told myself after SEason 3 (No way they're going to top that... they hit the plateau ) and Season 4 was indeed, arguably better than Season 3.

Season 4 was a bit weak to start, but those last 5 or so episodes, go damn.

If you read interviews with Vince Gilligan he talks about how the lows are necessary to accent the highs. I felt Season 4 was like one gradual build up, which took a few episodes to get going. But, I knew it was going to be hard core... and it delivered. I just thought it would go up once, back down, back up, and then end. Didn't know it was going to be a base jump with 5 episodes to go. Whew. What a ride.

I have too much on the go to devote that much time to TV. I generally only watch TV while eating and when going to bed.

Currently watching American Dad on Netflix during dinner. This show is definitely growing on me. it's definitely more witty than Family Guy(Family Guy is mostly dick and fart jokes), and I really like how far they push the 'Oh my god, I can't believe they just went there' factor. Lots of choking on my dinner.

While I completely agree that you need the lulls to have the highs, I still found some of the first few episodes of that season where almost unnecessary. It felt like the plot was being dragged out for time. That may have been to accent what was to come, but I still think they went a little too low.

Still shaking my head over the last 15 or 20 minutes of the first TekWar episode.

They gave absolutely no consideration to the incomparably awesome Martyyyy DOLLAR (played with great enthusiasm by Barry Flatman), and totally dropped the backstory that he wanted to fight Tek (digital drugs) because his wife had been a victim (also, Cardigan's girlfriend was really sloppy in picking up the hint about his wife during the lunch scene where he dropped that bomb - thinking back, it makes it pretty painfully obvious Flatman was one of the most capable actors on the show, and got just about nothing to work with). Even though the sob story was an obvious red herring to distract you from his obvious sleaze, it didn't make any sense not to pick that thread back up. He also got a pretty shitty sendoff (we last see him apparently unconscious in the middle of a pile of his TV retail company's famous crates). Apparently his amazing plan was just as transparent as I thought it would be, but even less intelligently plotted than I would have expected: He was using hero rent-a-cop Jake Cardigan's improbably qualified girlfriend just to cook up a Schedule One controlled chemical substance, despite having already developed a second lab, knowledge of the subject of Tek addiction deep enough to engage a top-flight chemical researcher's interest, and a few sinister underlings that already demonstrated the ability to addict people to Tek. Apparently all they needed was somebody who could synthesize the stuff in bulk. Conclusion: Jake Cardigan should kill his girlfriend as an obvious Tek proliferation threat vector.

Apparently Tek works like this, according to William Shatner: "Tek Chip...Tek Headset." Then lots of other stuff I don't remember. Put the Chip and Headset together, and you get addicting VR-like crap, full of naked glistening bodies or whatever woo-woo you want. Eats you up just as surely as meth but ultimately kills. Awww, think of the poor street urchins. In-show, William Shatner's character is recording a PSA against Tek drug abuse, and gets congratulated about his acting chops after ("I thought it was okay," he graciously demures). In said vignette, they actually used a traditional floppy worker's cap - the victim was a girl, I think - stuck by a trash can and brick wall reminiscent of a 1930s style set to make you think of the poor street urchins. There was also a policeman beating on her or something, but it didn't work because she went right back to that same brick wall and trash can to die, mentally smothered by glistening dudes. Addiction isn't fun, we're told.

Now, the part that doesn't make any sense (even compared to that, you ask? Yes, even compared to that) is that apparently there is a required chemical component as well. How the chemical plays any part in getting messages out through the "Matrix" - the Internet - is unclear so far. I don't think there will be an answer. Marty Dollar's scheme is to use something like the Tek technology, but in a machine that makes addictive music; instead of the usual "Tek" headset, it's a bracelet, and the music directly stimulates some cochlea or something in your brain.

Strangely, Shatner's lines at the "police headquarters" (I'm going to put these things in scare quotes and call them all rent-a-cops because so far everything points to this being a private company, not a governmental agency, but apparently they have the right to incarcerate - freeze - anybody who displeases them) were half decent! Sort of a Sun Tzu "know thyself as thy enemy" type thing. Very superficial except in comparison to the rest of the show. I know it's not his performance that impressed me - I can separate out the typical Shatner head-moves and delivery quirks from the actual lines. What he had to say was actually like it was written for another series. I guess I've just lost my frame of reference. There were some other attempts to be cute in the dialogue throughout the rest of the show, and they did use a couple tech gizmos competently as MacGuffins.

Unfortunately almost all tech credibility was lost because of the chemical nonsense mentioned above but also the completely ridiculous use of a holographic double before the climatic battle: "I almost got outbluffed by a hologram" is Cardigan's way of admitting that he decided he could drive a car over what he thought was his girlfriend, because he had a flashback to her taking her shoes off and assumed she never put them back on.

Fight scenes differed greatly in quality. The female main characters were painfully pulling hits and catfighting ineffectively, Cardigan himself is an awful fighter, but his afro-american partner gets to throw two guys through windows and was generally fun to watch. The main fight between Cardigan and Money mostly involved the camera wobbling up and down to make up for the inability of the actors to duck while standing in smoke.

Brief Conclusion: TekWar's TV series makes even less sense than seems possible. I feel ashamed even trying to explain this stuff in anything less than essay length. Marty Dollar should have his own television series. William Shatner could come along, as well as Cardigan's partner and his awesome gizmos.

Episode 2: After the world's most unconvincingly decadent smokes bar patron and informer sics a couple thugs on him, one fighting with what looks like a couple sparkling candies taped to his palm, Jake Cardigan looks like he's on the way to an early grave and a mercifully quick cancellation to the series. However, a blur of blonde hair and approximately 90 pounds of mostly clothes appears out of nowhere and flattens everybody. Understandably Cardigan goes out of his way to buy her a meal (cool prop alert: "Waitress in a Box," reminds me of that devil's head thing in the restaurant from an old Twilight Zone episode starring William Shatner. However, there is still an actual waitress to deliver the food, so all the Waitress in a Box does is give the restaurant an alibi for having a menu of less than 20 total meal choices). Touching Family History is revealed: The woman is older than Cardigan (actually, she looks it), and fought in the same war in Brazil that Cardigan's older brother did. Cardigan says something like "he saw a lot of action...and that's the last we ever saw of him." You know, if my brother died in Brazil in some hated neo-Vietnam whose veterans are discarded, I don't think I'd talk about it quite so flippantly, especially not in front of a veteran I knew could break heads with ease. Even if it was a 90 pound woman.

I'm not sure where this is going. Predictions: Tek Drug mule, Tek witness hit victim, or unexpected second partner. In a perfect world this would go off into some on-location scenes about the war in Brazil, but they won't dare. Not on this budget. Additionally, they should kill off Cardigan's love interest, before her facial expressions kill me.

I've just started Breaking Bad too... thank god it's summer and I've got a few weeks with ain't shit to do. Midway through Season 2 after a few days. ^_^ Haven't enjoyed a show this much since The Shield. ....actually, haven't watched a show since The Shield, last summer. This has been like the latter, best half of that series almost from the get-go. The tension at some points has been damn near uncomfortable. Serious black humour too. I was eating dinner when the bathtub fell through and nearly had to stop.

Not looking forward to hitting the last available ep but it can't be as bad as that time I read Berserk.

The best way to watch Breaking Bad is with enough booze in you, that you jump up and down yelling at Skyler through the episode. Also, you get a full second viewing with only a vague recollection of the first. It's like double the pleasure.

Just finished S4 of Breaking Bad. God damn, anyone who ever enjoyed shows like The Sopranos and The Shield (parallel domestic and crime dramas converging into unholy shitstorms) needs to watch this. It's like them but even better. But fuck, now I'm waiting on new eps like everyone else! Surely worth the pain though. I hope the fifth season really is the last, the end of the fourth set things up perfectly.

And unlike The Shield the soundtrack isn't ass. I was dying laughing at the scene with Jesse screwing about in the lab to Prince Fatty. Beautiful cinematography as well. The use of perspective in the ending shot of s4e10 "Crawl Space" was awesome.

Re: TV you've just watched

Only episode 5 of Breaking Bad, but has quickly become one of the best pieces of television I've seen. The whole thing is incredibly uncomfortable and heavily ironic, but there are parts--hell, just finished watching a part where Walter explains why he doesn't want to get Chemo, and it is one of the best acted bits of television I've seen.
