Crikey The Mandalorian is good. An obvious homage to westerns, it's hitting all the right notes with me.
Nothing much else to say without going into massive spoilers but this is easily the best Star Wars thing since Return of the Jedi. I only hope that the next six episodes continue on in exactly the same way as the first two.

When the show was announced I didn't see the point in having a character that looked like Boba Fett but not actually be him. They always change some shit, like making Tie Fighters black. What's the point, just use the old stuff. But now I see that by creating a new character they aren't bogged down with Star Wars canon fluff. With a new character they have complete freedom, and they've made him like Fett anyhow.

So yes, amazing, but it could easily all go down hill. I doubt they can keep this up.

I was going to ask about The Mandalorian. I don't want to pay for another streaming service so may binge it once it's done for $6 and then cancel. :) Of course the downside is the spoilers are all over my fucking facebook feed AND google amp.

The Mandalorian is really decent. My only concern is the very modern dialogue at times. It sounds more like Avengers' Joss Whedon than "golden age George Lucas" IMHO.

2019 is a confusing time for Sci-Fi. Two shows called War Of The Worlds. One is set in Victorian England, and it's very cool. The other (French/English) has too much in common with Black Mirror for it's own good.

Well, I'm watching it in the UK. As I'm such an original trilogy nut there was no way I could wait until March. So far I think it would work as a long movie. I'm expecting a fan edit to do just that.

If you are referring to
Spoiler
that blue alien at the start of episode one I agree. That guy is apparently one of the plebs on SNL, didn't fit the tone at all, he was fucking awful.
That was about the only thing I didn't like about the first episode. The second episode was even better.

The things I like about it so far are is that there is little dialogue, and what there is serves a purpose and moves the story along. No characters sitting around talking about themselves, and no damn slow mo music montages. The story isn't particularly new, but much like the original Star Wars the setting and characters are enough to make it different. They also really nailed the harsh survival aspect of Star Wars which has been missing since that Ewok died in Jedi. Life is cheap here.

My girlfriend isn't exactly at the same level of obsession as I am and she thought it was great. It also has
Spoiler
the cutest character ever created. Weird little thing, eating that frog.

Mandalorian - Other than an aforementioned scene Dan summed up, I'm enjoying it, and I'm thrilled Favreau is behind it. Spaghetti western vibes, shit even Rocky (music/montage/apollo? maybe all three).

The Deuce - Sad to see this end. Surprised they didn't try and squeeze out another season between 2 & 3 on the timeline, but I'm not surprised the final season dropped us in the middle of epidemic and right before
pornography made a full transition over to video. Also worth mentioning is the power structure shift in organized crime; that's a interesting rabbit hole to go down for anyone inclined: Gambino family, Robert DiBernardo, Matty The Horse, etc.
The whole season was exceptionally tragic but a la Deadwood, ended premature.
Spoiler
Paul, my favorite character, should have given a more appropriate sendoff, although you could say his own story is told through his partner. But there's an array of characters who weren't given any ending at all.

Well said. This was arguably the best show on TV while it was on. It's a shame James Franco's Me Too moment detracted a lot and created a loss of viewers. Fact is everyone in the show was fucking amazing... especially Maggie Gyllenhal this past season. I'm not the biggest fan of hers by any stretch, but mad props.

I, too, thought the jump from season 2 to season 3 was a bit of a stretch time-wise (even though most of the actors were close to their 1985 ages than the previous 2 seasons). I suspect they realized they just couldn't do a fourth. I'm sure it was pricey. It also seemed to work out well pace wise. Intro -> Life is good -> tragedy for the most part.
Spoiler
I liked the ambiguity of Paul's sendoff. He had come quite a long way since being just a bartender... we're pretty sure of what happened, but never know.

If the show was ended prematurely, I'd imagine Franco's behavior had something to do with that. Yep, Maggie Gyllenhal was phenomenal.

Did you come up with those first two lines? :o That's pretty rad.

"Buffet Froid" instantly makes me think of Super C's customarily pop culture-inflected Konami USAisms. Jagger Froid is a pretty badass name in hindsight!

ty, and i really and genuinely could not tell you. i could have sworn i heard it somewhere, but googling it (and the reverse, "the world of the living shall mourn the dead") pulled up absolutely zero results, same with a few similar phrases. was it a piece of engrish on some game flyer that embedded itself in my head? did i just dream it? will i ever learn to use tools other than a trackpad and ms paint?

scratch that, it's got to be a mutated version of this that sat in my head. must have been quoted in an anime or some shit and just embedded itself. i think it fits, tho! -

Aha, Khrushchev, that does ring a bell. Still, your rendition adds some very cool imagery. Definitely worthy of popping up on a title screen or arcade flyer, my favoured means of action gaming exposition. Image

Episode 4 of The Mandalorian was a big dip in quality. Directed by Bryce Dallas Howard... why? Too mawkish and sentimental, very different tone from the others. He also speaks a shit ton more in this one episode than all the others.

I'll allow them one misstep, hopefully that's all the crap out of the way. What are the chances?

Bar raised a couple of times. I can see how people would have been a bit put off w/ the first couple of episodes... but these last few. Let's see if ole' Damon sticks the landing.

I'm on board with Watchmen now too, although I still just want the Jeremy Irons supercut. I did not see the twist in the last ep coming but it made perfect sense when it did. The fact that all of these characters are so tightly connected makes the world feel a little small, but the original was like that too so I'm ok with it.

A suitable climax, waiting for its partner of a denouement. I imagine Trieu and Manhattan will clash epically in the next episode, but I'll be sad if Veidt doesn't get some moments of catharsis during or after that.

Mischief Maker wrote:Those of you unhappy with Voyager should check out Babylon 5 and see a sci fi show that really transcends its low budget with great writing.

The first season is weak, but necessary because the whole show's plot is interconnected.

The final season can be safely skipped, the second-to-last season had a great, but rushed ending because the higher ups were threatening to pull the plug. But then after the whole story was rushed to completion, they greenlit an extra season so the final one is mostly filler.
Just want to give a big agreement to this. Earlier in the year, I rewatched B5 for the first time since its original broadcast with someone who'd never seen it before, and who wanted to keep going as season 4 came to a close. The character work was so good! How hard could they drop the ball? Roughly hard enough to reach the Earth's core, as it turns out. So it's better to watch the season 5 finale (which was filmed as the season 4 finale) in place of the aired season 4 finale and say goodbye gracefully.

Concerning season 1, I'd skip a third of the episodes for various reasons. Going further, into fan edit territory, I'd like to slightly alter "In the Beginning". It's a strong story and probably the best introduction to the series, but a few things prematurely spoil later developments.

Evil -

A strange but quite intriguing plot where a psychiatrist, priest and technical guru go around de-bunking so called paranormal activity. Such as demonic possessions, people who can predict the future etc. Its a fictional dramatization and has a girl in it thats quite my type. I'd give it a 7 or an 8 out of 10 (for me anyway).

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9055008/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

The Mandalorian -

Watched up to ep5. It works because its very linear. Like one of those 60's-70's shows where it flows, but one episode has little to do with the previous one. The reason it works it because it doesn't try to save the universe, its quite slow and pays attention to details rather building a death star and blowing up planets. If you had a bit of this in the movies it would be great. Although people don't realize it they don't want 2+ hours of storm troopers falling over and such. The Mando actually struggles a lot, he is a guy that can take a few hits and feels the pain.

Outlander -

Watching the latest season. Enjoying it still.

His Dark materials -

Based on the movie "The Golden Compass", or it is the other way around? Anyway, up to ep4 and its still treading the Golden Compasses foot print. I assume they made a TV show of it to extend what was a flop movie that never went into sequelitis. If you liked the Golden Compass and wanted to know what happened after the first movie, this might be one for you. But as I said, its not past the end of the movie yet and there is a 2nd season already made, I know because my friend is an extra in it. I was quite impressed with the visuals in this one. Animals talk to humans and vice versa, some of the animation is budget but in a nice way. Maybe CGI is just cheaper these days.
I would recommend, 8 out of 10.

It's based on the book series (and the author is an executive producer of the series). It's not 100% faithful but much moreso than the movie.
