Hard difficulty of Rocket Knight Adventures is nuts, anything will kill you in a single hit  It's Megaman's Mr. Perfect all over again!

Call me crazy but I actually like this. More games should have a hardcore mode for us masochists.

Was actually playing this recently for the first time. Far from brilliant IMO, if anything it's really kind of nasty.

Well, it definitely isn't everyone's cup of tea. Especially with some of the more euroshmuppy elements, and the somewhat bothersome way the playing field works [think RayStorm's screen edges].
But it is technically competent, and I found it to be tons of fun to play.

I have to confess even though it's a mess of a game.... I actually enjoy Earnst Evans on Mega CD.

Does no one else like El Viento on here?

I've always wanted Aero Buster but have been torn between the MD and PCE version. Any feedback between the two ports?

Crazy deal. I pity the fool who sold it to you and didn't know that the stuff was worth 5 times that amount. Are we talking genuine copies? Or maybe reproductions?

Nope... all legit. There was one catch. The carts on Eleminate down and Gley Lancer were cut to fit in US systems. I used a heat gun to remove the labels safely then reapplied them to fresh carts. All 100 percent, legit and no damage to the labels. In near mint shape.

Heat guns are magical when it comes to removing labels without damaging them.

Gave Rocket Knight Adventures a try after seeing the recommendations...holy crap the game is awesome! I like that they're always throwing new things at you, it never gets repetitive. The mecha fight in particular was a cool surprise. Will definitely play more later.

There's a PS3 version of the game, anyone knows if it's as good as this one? I remember trying the demo briefly and thought it was nothing great.

Everything I've read of it, including comments from friends, points to it being deeply mediocre and lacking all of the inventiveness and joyfulness of the 16bit games. Konami farmed it out to a western dev, unsurprisingly.

Solid graphics, good music, intriguing plot... all marred by the clunky gameplay. I like it in a nostalgic way, but it's a flawed game.

Heh, just noticed Sparkster on the back of Hard Corps' manual. Poor guy. He deserved to outlive the shitty mascot fad that spawned him.

On the subject of Splatterhouse 3, mentioned earlier in the thread - yeah, the JP version is the one to get. Underneath the spectacular occult/slasher/body horror aesthetic it's got a solid, Final Fight-esque engine that rewards skilled play and punishes otherwise. The US version amps up the smartly low-key crowd control move to the effect of it becoming FF's bomb without a health penalty. Completely spoils the game - there's literally no reason to use any other move, ever. Going without the move altogether is like playing Hard Corps without sliding. Doable but awkward at best and potentially infuriating since the game was clearly designed with invincible frames in mind.

Not sure if they've been mentioned yet, but I've been playing the first two Bare Knuckles.

Now I've been playing these games for twenty-one years and I think I've come to the conclusion that the first game is the best.

As graphically and aurally impressive as the second BK is, I think in the end it just doesn't play as well as the first, despite having more moves and inputs.
BK2 can be a tad sluggish to control (compare Axel's movement from BK1 to BK2), in the first game you can turn around mid-combo a lot quicker and more fluidly to deal with enemies you failed to herd that end up surrounding you.

I think the game engine allows around ten or so (albiet smaller) sprites on screen, which leads to some hectic action.

Knives are more effective (ie they are actually worth picking up) and the characters in BK1 have unique animations for holding weapons, unlike 2 where the weapons are just tacked on to the regular idle animations.

Both games can take a while to clear, but BK2 in this regard is kinda ridiculous and tends to outstay it's welcome by about stage 6 for me.

I expect that most people probably won't agree with me on this as Streets of Rage 2 has been placed on quite a lofty pedestal as the seminal belt scroller for MD, but nevertheless.

The only problem with BK1 I have is the Blaze Twins, as they tend to represent an annoying difficulty spike on Hardest setting. They are the only thing stopping me from the Hardest 1cc and it's the second fight with them I have issues with (right before the final boss).

I was wondering what's the deal with the difficulties in Rocket Knight Adventures...you go from easy (2 lives and 3 continues, which is the usual settings for most games) to normal (1 life, 1 continue, takes a lot more damage than before) to hard (1 life, no continues, die in a single hit). It's a massive jump in difficulty from each setting.

But then I read the wikipedia article on the game and everything makes sense:

Way to mislead the player.

Hell yeah! The entire El Viento/Earnest Evans series is awesome. I think we actually talked about it a bit in the Anime thread, if I do recall.

Blackthorne for 32x also has an entire different scenario that isn't in the other console releases. The titular character kinda has an oddly shaped head, though.

The Earnest Evan's "series" is one of those 'so bad its good' things. The games are crap - no point mincing words - but the music and presentation are endearing, and Evans' animation is pure hilarity. Annette Futatabi is barely playable though. Dull as dishwater and painful to try and push through.

I totally agree! El Viento for example isn't *good* per-se, but it's worth trying at least once. I like what they're trying to do more than how it actually turned out. It's a pity there hasn't been another attempt at the same style.

Oh yes. The Valis series is one of my faves. It's a must to play them on PC-Engine, though! The Genny/SNES ports are usually missing quite a bit. Unless you just want to play Valis SD

El Viento is totally good. I wouldn't say great - but good? Sure.

Earnest Evans is one of the best games on the system just for sheer hilarity. Just randomly discovering that game and playing for 15 minutes gave me a warm feeling in my belly that lasted for days.

I recall that the Valis series has become pornography these days, complete with tentacle rape. I remember feeling pretty insulted when I found out.

Yeah, visual novels of sort with tentacle rape. I'm okay with tentacle rape, but not tentacle rape conversions. :?

That was just Valis X, which apparently wasn't successful enough for a sequel. Apparently, someone at Telenet thought fans played all the previous games just for the sexual appeal. I understand why he would have a hard time believing that fans actually enjoyed the shoddy mechanics of earlier games, but he was wrong. Apparently, Valis fans holistically enjoyed the sidescroller experience of the original games.

As for the Annet series, El Viento's controls just don't feel solid, Earnest Evans is a mess, and Anet Futatabi is really easy. Sure, the trilogy's atmosphere is a bit mesmerizing and the music is consistently excellent, but everything just doesn't add up for me. None of Telenet's sidescrollers control quite right. Nobody will confuse their games for Capcom, Nintendo, or Sega sidescrollers. I'm still slightly fond of playing them, but heavily for the atmosphere.

Interesting, I had no idea. I only own the Japanese version, bought it many years ago. Wasn't there something different about the player sprite (Rick) in the US-version of Splatterhouse 2 or 3, as well?

Another good game not mentioned here, Crusader of Centy, reminds me a lot of Zelda on SNES, even EGM said so back in the day. Unfortunately now it's a costly game.

Also if you mention RKA, you must also mention Sparkster. That game catches a lot of shit because folks don't feel it held up as well as the original game, but I love it just as much as I love RKA (I even went as far as procuring SNES and Gen versions of the game from forum folks, a friend helped me procure RKA as I could never find it locally).

When discussing games you want people to go back and fix, Earnest Evans is always one I champion. All they need to do to bring the game out of its mire is swap the main sprite with a solid and cool looking replacement without all the independent limb nonsense (resembling the character in the art would be nice) and give him a whip with proper Castlevania snap and decent range. If I had the ability, I would have definitely tried to do something like this already.

Yeah, the mask was changed for the US and EU versions of Splatterhouse 2. In the JP it looks more ornate with long black slits for eyes, in the others it's a skull.

As far as I know there are no graphical changes between the third game in US or JP, as far as sprites or backgrounds go (a few logos and the title screen are different in US - there's no EU version at all).
