^I always thought Dreams of Leaving was very similar to the Blood Money title music (C64)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9dxPEyQaT0

On the original hardware the 'swooshing wind' sample would glitch out and create the same white noise as in the above
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxsECy1dqrA

Then of course theres Blind Youth
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kH8B9mAdMag

Which was the title music for Slayer (Amiga)

The biggest unanswered question is where is the money? [1CCS]

A BBC documentary Synth Britannia is much recommended if you're into that kind of thing. I consider it as exhaustive a treatise as you could ask of its calibre TV production.

The amateur aspect of this one just makes it... pure awesome

Enough said

This record by The Sword not only has a badass cover art, but it's also an incredible oldschool style heavey metal album. Almost Frank Frazetta-esque in it's composition and solid depth of field rendering.

Dissection's Storm of the Light's Bane album art is one of my favorites just because in addition to having a badass grim reaper on in, it really captures the bleak, cold, yet beautiful atmosphere of the actual music on the album
Image

I think it might be the same artist as Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse which also has great artwork that captures the atmosphere of the music

Yes! two real cold-ass covers for two amazing black metal records.

Almost posted Storm of the Light's Bane in my post above

I'm totally diggin the vibe of this recent acquisition: French Kiss by the late Bob Welch. If this doesn't get your knickers tight, I don't know what will.

It was a while back, but I do feel like I have to shout out to whoever mentioned Iron Maiden's Somewhere in Time album, because that has got to be one of the best. My bro had a vinyl copy of that album when I was much younger, and I was just amazed by the level of detail there. I'm sure I didn't even get any of the subtle references. Iron Maiden pretty much always has good album art, but that one was something else. I had a kind of similar experience with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Don't forget about the reverse side of that one! Not as many details, but still very impactful on my young mind. lol.

One much more obscure one--a 7" split--that I actually ended up buying because of the artwork, but was pleasantly surprised by the music, especially the side by the band The Makai. Really great mix of like crustcore, post-metal, and melodeath.

Speaking of obscure 7" records, here's one by one of my favorite local bands, a black metal band called False. I don't know if I like the actual album quite as much as some of their other releases, but I do like it, and it has pretty sweet album art. Unfortunately the printing on my copy came out too dark to really see much detail, but the online image is not so bad

One more, that I think is worth mentioning is another local band that's been disbanded for quite a few years now. They were more of a hardcore punk band, also very good. This is Ganglion's Of the Deep

That cover has me mesmerized since I was a kid, and up to this day still does...

Also : Shoryukev posted King Diamond's Them earlier. I'd like to add that this artist(Thomas Holm) has cranked out a couple more god-tier covers.

On the topic of Mercyful Fate, I love the cover of Don't Break the Oath (and the album itself). Love that firey background and the devil guy. It really stands out

And yes that cover is also badass (and made by Thomas Holm too)

Never QUITE liked it, myself, but it is, around here, fairly iconic.

Also...

...which is actually made by a compatriot of mine. Apparently the Columbia folks did not like it and it was the band themselves who told Columbia to take it or leave the band.

Then again, HELL BENT FOR LEATHER is arguably even more transgressive with its strong homo vibes to menace the moral majority of the day! Maybe that was the idea?

Priest shocking the masses via sheer display of decadent homo lifestyle is awesome  always enjoyed (and respected) that approach. It's like the biggest of fuck yous.

Gonna go on a small wrestling tangent(but just this one post, then I'm done. I promise  ) to expend on what I've written above : for the same reason I've always like the wrestler character Goldust. His character being a huge, flamboyant fag was sure to get a rise out of stuckup rednecks all across the good ol' USA. It's just too funny : imagine a 30 000 seats sports stadium somewhere in Texas. filled to the rafters with rednecks. Now this fucking gold-laced diva comes in and blows kisses and caresses his torso  Now you've got everyone in the audience angry, rattled to the point of shouting until they loose their voice.

What always gets me, is how what was regarded as knowingly camp in their native UK became some kind of Satanic menace stateside... with poor Rob its unwitting dark lord. There's recent interviews with Halford, Tipton & Downing where they recount being taken aback at how deadly seriously Rob's "Turbo Village People" persona was taken. The cut I saw had Lemmy chime in too ("Did you know Rob was gay back then?" "OH NO, NO IDEA AT ALL MATE! WOW, WHO WOULD EVER HAVE GUESSED").

Testament to the unifying power of \m/etal imo. When the people are confronted with a canonical metal god, such petty concerns fall away and they rally accordingly. Rob's either gonna save your soul or send you straight to hell - liking men doesn't really come into it tbh. Image
