Tatsujin PC Engine Soundtrack. Dear lord. The PCE could sound so bad, but sometimes it could sound SO FUCKIN GOOD. Heavenly melodies. ;_; Blows away the arcade and MD versions imo.

Also, Majuu Ou Miniboss Theme. What did I do to deserve this?! So funky.

yeah, the PCE tatsujin has a great soundtrack. I just got the PCB and am curious as to the differences, as I know the MD and PCE versions pretty well...

Tetris TGM 3 (Megaten & Aya): BGM from the final section of Shirase at levels 1000-1300, with a voice sample that sounds like "I swear to God".

F/A Fighter & Attacker (Shinji "Megaten" Hosoe): This destroys Zed Blade & Streets of Rage combined.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xkWVitKvA8 (Time Looper)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbJlTa3F ... re=related (Give Me Trip)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNrIo8J7 ... ure=relmfu (Desert Storm)

Hitoshi Sakimoto really did make something of the Midnight Resistance BGM with the Genesis version. The arcade tunes sound pale in comparison. On the Genesis, the BGM quality more than makes up for the missing voice samples. If MR ever shows up on XBL/PSN, it needs an option to use the Genesis BGM instead of the arcade tracks.

Smash TV is one game whose BGM comes out poorly on Genesis, with a bunch of metallic plinky noises. While the BGM's composition is true to the arcade soundtracks, the instruments used in this version totally kill it.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Mr. Heli is another OST that's improved by the PCE sounchip IMO. Image Fight sounds pretty good in some areas too. Namely, the Organic Zone.

The PCE did do a lot better with warmer, melodic sounds like Tatsujin and Mr. Heli, I think. The Star Soldier games are three other good examples of it shining when given the right tunes. Ninja Spirit's sinister, pounding arcade OST definitely didn't survive the conversion. (I wish there'd been an MD conversion of that game - everything about it seems a perfect fit for the system: three-button control, muted colour palette, furious action with tons of small, sparingly-animated sprites and that buzzsaw-sharp synth guitar tone)

Been very impressed with the first area BGM of Demon's Crest, a gorgeously melancholic opening piece that was a pleasant surprise given I'd forgotten all about it and mentally replaced it with the Makaimura games' goofy main theme.

Been listening to the Daifukketsui soundtrack a lot lately. virt did a great job with the remixing.

Favorite track for sure (stage 4): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7GVzuHAKXE

Even though I haven't played the game in ages, I've never quite been able to get the music from Super Mario Galaxy out of my head for some reason. Here's a couple of favorites:
Battlerock Galaxy
Space Junk Galaxy

And even though it's non-game music, I've got to throw this one in because it seems to fit into the same general theme:
Soarin' Over California Theme (from the ride at Disney's California Adventure)
We want you, save our planet!

Incredible, incredible OST. Shinji Hosoe has my eternal fandom for both Dragon Spirit and Dragon Saber. Packed with soaring energy and a few creepy atmosperic numbers too. You can tell he put a lot of care into that music, with Saber featuring the entire Spirit OST redone as a hidden bonus soundtrack.

Earth Defense Force

One of the most underrated shoot 'em up soundtracks ever. You hardly ever hear it mentioned. Powerful melodies interspersed with quieter moments that slowly build up momentum.

I'm really torn between the arcade original and the SFC version here. Arcade is more "crystalline" and "expensive" sounding, but the SFC really brings out the crazy funky basslines!

Compare and contrast:

Midnight Intercept (Arcade) Vs. Midnight Intercept (SFC)

Naval Battle (Arcade) Vs. Naval Battle (SFC)

I've been getting back into Mega Drive OSVs - there's a gulf between the tinny dreck that earned the system's audio a bad rep and the monstrously heavy, textured sounds skilled programmers could crank out of games like Midnight Resistance, Vampire Killer and Alien Soldier. Hitoshi Sakimoto strikes again and again.
Word. Hitoshi Sakimoto's Mega Drive output is mind-blowingly good. He really knew how to use the synth sounds to greatest effect.

Not always specifically video game music, but I've been using Spotify to listen to Chiptune tracks for the last few days. It's pretty cool when, every now and then, a Chiptune remix of an old classic will come on and I'll recognize it. Predictably, there's lots of Megaman and Castlevania stuff out there. Like any modern genre some of it's pretty annoying but there are tracks that range from okay to good floating around.

Good stuff! I like the AC's less punchy but richer sound - the added subtlety and nuance really adds to the dramatic effect the composer was clearly aiming for, especially in the second track. Definitely an argument for including multiple BGM revisions in ports.

The same composer worked on Plus Alpha and other Jaleco games. If by chance he/she is the same as Saint Dragon's, then he (she?) is Sizlla Gainsbourg, who also did View Point.

Speaking of which...

I was just looking at his VGMdb page which has a link to his personal site - doesn't seem to list Saint Dragon or Viewpoint. Here's Gainsbourg's page.

God, Viewpoint's OST is good. First game soundtrack of that dance/house ilk I heard back in the day, still holds up now. The intro BGM with the stubby little ship blasting off into the clouds is so cute! One, two, three four - HIT

Sweet jesus, I just found out there was a Playstation port of Viewpoint, with an updated CD-quality soundtrack.

I hate everything about the Playstation version, the arranged music, the "shiny" graphics ...blergh!

If you want the Viewpoint BGM in remastered CD quality just go for the Neo Geo CD version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SdrBDjHM3Q

BPzeBanshee posted this a while back - for some reason it really clicked with me this evening: "Bloody Memory," a darkly aggressive cover of The Guardian Legend's third boss theme in the synth-metal style of Hyakutaro Tsukumo (Thunder Force V / Hyper Duel / Blast Wind composer). Would've fit in quite nicely in Zanac Neo, I think. I love the remixer's and uploader's usernames, haha. Hyperdueltastic.

Some of Midnight Resistance's awesome BGMs have already been posted in this thread, but fans of Data East's driving heroic synth anthems will surely also love the theme of Vapor Trail:

Definitely - all three Kuuga games exemplify DECO's booming power synth sound. My favourite style of VGM to annihilate hordes of enemies to in 80s/90s AC titles. ^_^ Even though it's not the greatest shooter by a long way, Skull Fang at least keeps up the musical standard. The Saturn disc even has thrashing arrangements of Vapor Trail's theme and Wolf Fang's "SLAUGHTER MACHINE." (I can't resist typing that game's song titles in all caps!)

While my life is definitely turning into a Pynchon book, I had time to play Double Dragon with the affable Neo-Nazi guy who I am business partner with, on his B&B's mame cab.

I went back home while walking through the all-too familiar landscape of my late grandpa's village, which is almost identical to the forest's part of Stage 3 (Must take pictures, one day). I was humming this theme:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Tzotf-Wmjk (best I could find, wtf?).

I had to elbow-beat a green Abobo to get home.

PS: 22nd of April and it's 4C, the smell of snow floats in the air. Not that I dislike the late, lingering Winter.

More on the topic of Mega Drive FM:

Tim Follin's Time Trax opening tune.

This blows my mind every time I hear it. How he got this kind of depth and range out of the Mega Drive's FM is simply beyond me!

I've not played / heard much of Assault, mostly because I read on this forum that Namco Museum Vol.4's port runs at half speed... so I wrote it off for now. Will have to give it a listen, as Hosoe's Namco stuff regularly blows my goddamn socks off with both its quality and eclecticism. I'd never have guessed the same guy was involved with Dragon Spirit/Saber and Ridge Racer Revolution.

Yeah CIT - it's amazing what a difference a good composer / programmer could make on the MD. I've been playing The Super Shinobi and Splatterhouse III this week, both games that make me crank the stereo right up... so many lesser MD sound works have precisely the opposite effect on me.

edit: see also lunatic stuff lke Contra Hard Corps' "Format X." I refuse to play this game too late at night now, since the neighbour is a nice old granny, and hearing that song's "photocopier fucking a fax machine" staccato power chords (puncutated by regular car-crash explosion sfx) at anything less than shouting volume is simply unsatisfactory.

love this ending theme, especially the electric piano-ish tones at 1 minute in. I got the flac off piratebay, sounds nicer & clearer, though its been "remastered" by some guy to who knows what end. dear amateur remastering people, do you have studio grade mastering room/speakers/ears? if not....
