 Nice doujin album. WOODSOFT made some good quality stuff.

Barry Leitch is a nice composer. Here's a bonus of Brazilian band MegaDriver playing the theme next to Barry with an amazing audience singing (poor quality, unfortunately): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NUWXWTetYY

sandog deserves a fucking medal for the Numan Athletics soundtrack, hot damn
The VGM rip sounds slightly naff, but sound emulation for the board [really, emulating it in general] is pretty naff.

The King of Fighters '00 Arrange Sound Trax
In my opinion the best of the arranged works. The game may not be the best in the series, but the music is my favourite in all the games.

Honestly, I think '00 is the best in the series.

Lots of British composers really understood how to make the best out of the SNES sound (David Wise being the most obvious example), instead of trying to make it sound like a muffled orchestra.
Plok and Tim Follin is another great example of that:

A tangled yet awesome web has led me to a prime stash of DOMESTIC BOOTY. Naoto Shibata of Japanese heavy metal stalwarts Anthem was the driving force behind Konami's immortal Shooting/Dracula/Snatcher Battle ASTs (Anthem also contributed the image song for Falcom's Xanadu - "Get POWWA!").

Meanwhile Chris Tsangarides produced all sorts of my favourite stuff, possibly the most notable being Judas Priest's landmark Sad Wings of Destiny and later triumphant return to form Painkiller. Turns out Tsangarides produced a ton of Anthem's stuff too! All of this to say, if you dig the Konami Battle ASTs, and/or Priest, you should try out the improbably named... DOMESTIC BOOTY. Balls-out chromium-plated heavy metal, like fuckin Shooting Battle with screaming JAPANESE ROBU HARUFORDO vocals. Ta Razorfist.

>VENOM STRIKE
>HEAVY DUTY
>CRY IN THE NIGHT

And then I was in the mood for the inimitably badass heavy metal OST of DECO's Gama Delic, so I fired up the peerless THUNDER ZONE. Jackhammering speed metal, cheesy power metal, even borderline thrash, they soaked up all sorts of good influences for this one. Fans of the more widely-known Vapor Trail, Wolf Fang and Skull Fang OSTs should jump on this pronto. Last I knew the game wasn't emulated in MAME, just its crappier overseas version "Desert War" (edit: my mistake - should be "Desert Assault"). Wonder if that's been fixed.

>OPERATION THUNDER ZONE
>OH SHIT!
>HOT FRIENDSHIP

I love it   Thunder Zone itself is a goddamn riot too - even the crummier, credit-eating Desert War (edit: Desert Assault, rather) keeps most of the trademark crazy DECO speech samples, for manful co-op fun. ROOM SERVICE! I'M BURNING! WHAT TOOK YA SO LONG

I'm slowly opening up to the Dragon Quest soundtracks.

It wasn't until I first heard the orchestral recordings that I really liked the music, but originally I'd write it off as the typical orchestral treatment which really tends to make any video game track sound great. But there's more to it than that.
On the surface, it comes across similar to the neo-classical style of the Final Fantasy soundtracks, but Dragon Quest music isn't really video game music. It's not immediately catchy, nor highly distinctive according to various regions and moods. The music is generally built on a complexity that is difficult to really appreciate in music played in the background of a scene, and most importantly, it's designed specifically for real instruments, and rarely works well with synthetic instruments, which is almost alarming considering the background of the series, and the fact that it took nearly 20 years before a game was finally released using actual orchestral recordings. Some of the original NES soundtracks are borderline painful to listen to, meanwhile the orchestral renditions are beautiful. Hell, I just recently saw someone point out that the original NES/FC version of DQ4 actually uses crescendos in the battle theme, which is otherwise completely unheard of in video game music, as it is in pop music.
Not surprisingly, Dragon Quest 1 was also the first game to ever receive an official orchestral soundtrack release, in the very same year.

Now, you'd imagine this to be less of an issue nowadays, and knowing what you can do with synthetic sound on modern hardware, and I didn't really understand why people were complaining that even the PS4 version of the new 11th game in the series would have synthetic music, as well as the western release of the 3DS port of DQ8. But the difference is really striking.
Currently working on the the European PS2 version of DQ8, I am for the first time ever really getting lost in the amazing sounds of a Dragon Quest soundtrack, something none of the DS remakes managed to do. This overworld theme is beautiful, and despite playing almost constantly throughout the entire game, I have yet to get tired of it. I even tend to listen to it at work, looking forward to being able to return to the game when I get home:

For comparison, here's the original version in the Japanese release, which didn't get the luxury of a fully orchestrated soundtrack:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsO1ClyQq7Y

While not terrible, it's clearly subpar. The big question here is, why did they even bother to release it like this? And why did they do it again for XI? Hell, I'd imagine even the DS games should be able to fit slightly compressed versions of the "real deal" on a 128MB card. The PS2 remake of DQ5 got that after all, and once again the difference is striking:

Ah yes, the issue of subpar synthetic versions of wonderful orchestra music in Dragon Quest. Welcome to the club, Sumez. :)
All jokes aside, it's been like this for a while, which is a shame. I didn't really mind the NDS remakes, they sound fine. VII and VIII on the 3DS, on the other hand, sound like shit, especially if you played the US/EU version of VIII first.
But that's a poor port, anyway, even with the nice extras.

I heard a lot of people in favor of the 3DS port. I wanted to stick to my original version though, not only because the original game both looks and sounds much better, but also because DQ remakes have a tendency to "dumb down" some of the stuff that I consider the charm of the series. Ie. having to "grind" your way forward and be greedy with upgrading your gear in order to stay fit for fight.
I will say though, that I really miss the ability to speed up the incredibly slow combat, and I'm not a fan of the constant loading times either.

DQ7 is less divisive though. People tend to almost unanimously agree that the 3DS version is better, even despite some people missing some of the stuff that was cut. So I got the 3DS version of that, even though I've owned the PS1 game for years. However, knowing how amazing the orchestral recordings of this game are (definitely among the best of the entire series), it's really really sad that they were cut from this release, too.

I'm honeslty not a fan of the NDS soundtracks. DQ5 gets a pass despite not being nearly as memorable as the PS2 one, but I'd say DQ6 actually sounds horrible. I played most of that game with the sound muted, due to the off-putting sound of some of the synthetic instruments. You shouldn't have to do that.
It's been a long time since I played DQ4 on DS, so I don't really remember that. But I don't recall the soundtrack standing out much for better or worse.

I think this has been mentioned before, but I think the use of synthetic music is due to Koichi Sugiyama wanting big moolah to use the orchestral versions. Just a thought.

Saga Frontier II - the whole thing, but there's a tune. Get the most nostalgia from those PS1 soundtracks.

I don't get it though. Every single spinoff title has had no problem reusing a ton of different orchestrations from all the classic games, so it's insane that the actual main series games miss out.

Saya no Uta is a very silly visual hentai thingy, but its Schizophrenia remains my favourite VG-related song to blast at floor-shaking volume upon getting home from a long, annoying day. Feels good! Languid guitar dirge with guttural bass and percussion that's tastefully reserved - much unlike the game! Image

Agua PLS, the bottom end is FAT AS FUCK and the lead sustain is WAILIN Image that's not hell that's ROCK N ROLL, and that funny feeling is YOUR FIRST REAL ERECTION
