Well, the documents are ostensibly intended to be printed, and the layout of a typical journal is 100% print oriented.
That being said, most end up getting read on screens at this point, it's been a while since the typical consumption format of these things has been on paper. :P

probably could just get an e-reader and load them up on that, but like, bah

How the flow of junk e-mail to my inbox has gone into absolute overdrive over the last few months; dozens upon dozens of spam mailers per day, oftentimes multiple times a day from the same spammer, and attempting to block them doesn't stem the tide at all (which just makes it more irritating; I understand the notion of getting your pitch to every living thing under the sun, but when someone blocks you they're probably not interested, so why come up with workarounds to keep telling them to buy things they're NOT going to buy?). I've had my junk folder set to "exclusive" for years, but lately I've had to intentionally unflag any outlet that I have the slightest chance of responding to at some point, since I just don't want to have to sift through my constantly-overloaded junkbox to sniff out the occasional item of interest.

I'm fairly sure this is the result of my having moved a few months ago; the businesses I had no choice but to deal with in order to get the deal done and get everything set up must have sold my information six ways from Sunday, so now I'm being prompted at least daily, with no means of recourse, to participate in lawsuits I have no claim to and to sign up for retirement courses I'm decades away from qualifying for, and that's just scratching the surface. Thanks, guys!

but you’re literally stealing from the people who make things you’re interested in.
Except when you steal roms, right matey?

They are the entire point of all video gaming, but that's "completely different". :-) Games are free, right? Only hardware is IP! ;-)

If the original dev company is out of business, it's an excuse to steal. If the company was sold to investors, it's an excuse to gank it. Even if the company (Nintendo or Sega) is going strong, it's "reselling" the game and (surprise!) an excuse to nick it.

Hypothetically, if someone licenced and released a PC game and didn't put any DRM on the rom itself, it's like *totally* cool to download the rom and get a refund--effectively stealing the game rom from the owners of the IP. But, that's (like) *totally* different.

Honor among thieves, matey. Stick to the code!

Like that time kevtris had to add support to his FPGA console for Risky Rick when there was no rom release available and his console had no Coleco cart slot. He even posted the details to bypass the DRM and dump the cart.

Oh, yes, mateys! Stick to the code! Agrrrrrhh, matey!

Reading any kind of academic paper is miserable because of this.
Back in the days I used to write academic papers. Double column mandatory here too. This is because it allows to put more things on a single sheet, paper economy. The planet will live longer, and our eyes will live shorter.

Apple TV plus.

This is the scummiest streaming service I've ever sampled. Half the movies they advertised aren't even on the service. The app is a goddamn mess. And when you want to cancel subscription on your PC, they demand you install iTunes first. Thankfully I was able to cancel from the smart TV.

"Severance" is not worth this.

Hard to say. There's still the people that pronounce diabetes as "die-uhh-bet-tis".

And, other people that name their creations using intentionally obtuse spelling or pronunciation. Like telling me to pronounce a G as J. Jif is peanut butter.

Or, the ones that say Intendo. I can't think of many words with a silent N.

All significantly more ignorant than being born in Atlanta.

Those same people order some type of coffee called expresso.

Since I'm ranting, English has useless letters. X can be replaced by "z" or "ecks". That's all it does. One of "c" or "k" can probably be shit canned too.

I need somewhere to bitch about this!
Selling on eBay and forced returns.

Listed a Colecovision console as For Parts/Not Working.
Priced it a few bucks lower than any comparable recently sold item as I just wanted to get rid of it and clear up space.
Some guy bought it before the day was out. ...then he emails me questions. My new rule: anyone asking questions about an item after they purchase it gets cancelled and blocked. Without fail it is always the people asking questions after paying for an item who then become a problem or at least an annoyance.

He received it today and files a Return Request as "Defective" - stating that he "cleaned the contacts on (his) Donkey Kong cartridge and the graphics are still all garbled."
The problem here is two-fold - the moron buying something listed and described as Not Working and Untested and yet expecting it to work perfectly - but more a problem is eBay having the "For Parts/Not Working" category but then allowing a return for being "Defective"
How can something sold as "not working" be defective?
It's 100% as described = not working. But ebay allows it to be returned because it is not working?!?

Besides losing the $20 shipping x2, I'm more annoyed about all the wasted time packing it up, taking it to the post office, responding to his idiotic messages, and uselessly trying to get eBay customer service to do something about it.

Probably should have sold that on the forums over at AtariAge. You might not have gotten much for it, but you're far more likely to find someone that wants a malfunctioning unit for parts or repair.

This thread is huge so I don't know if anyone covered it.

Youtube videos that say something like "Last episode of xxxxx explained".

Am I the only one on this planet that thinks that if a show wants to end in such a way that it is so complicated to understand it deserves its own video, which is likely someones perspective rather than fact, is worth watching at all? Surely any show should make a good case to explaining shit on its own!!! I just don't get half of the shit thats on youtube. Since the monetization effect youtube is full of shit. The amount of USA citizens watching movies for the 1st time in front of you, or watching a comedy sketch from the UK is just ridiculous. It must be a good earner for some as many many folks are doing to the point of over saturation.

Not to mention movie trailers on youtube, which is a 90 sec advertisement, that needs another advertisement in front of it.... I am sure once I went to watch a movie trailer on youtube, and the advert was a cutdown trailer of the trailer I wanted to watch :|

That kind of shit irritates me to no end. I see it all the time, even for something like DOOM and superhero movies. It's for the simplest of dipshits. Some of the magic of fiction leaves interpretation up to the viewer, imagine that! That is a scary thought for dominant species, flatus brainus. Or what about the ending that leaves unanswered questions! Uh-oh! What happens at the end of The Thing!? Maybe someone can explain that for me 'cuz i are no think good :(((((

Special shoutout to all the FromSoft lore videos spelled out and extrapolated, where everything is super sad and all the put together item descriptions make me feel deep melancholy I didn't know I had for the boss I just killed

Cross-posting from AO here:

I got hacked on Facebook a couple of weeks back (I didn't hesitate long enough not to click on an innocent link in a Messenger message and the damage was done) but I didn't realize until this morning when I got a notification that an ad I supposedly had placed was denied due to political content. It was in Russian. When I got home from work, I tried to change my password, but the hacker was always many steps ahead and suddenly he/she/it went full bananas on my account, locking me out, everything was in Russian too, so navigating blindly to try anything was impossible. I had my account for 20 something years. Now I went out with a bang, as it started to pump out porn ads etc before it effectively got closed by Facebook (I guess).

I was careful to try and keep my Instagram account, but there's no telling if I was successful with that or not. I might have a key logger installed on my PC, I'm writing this on my Macbook. My Hotmail and effectively everything connected to Microsoft accounts are probably affected as well. What a time to be alive.

Can anyone recommend a good spyware removal tool for Windows?

Ah yes, the classic case of unknowingly getting a keylogger planted on your PC then having to worry about it potentially snooping on your Microsoft account credentials because Microsoft has been working so hard to push users into having to use a Microsoft account just to use Windows. At least macOS doesn't force you to use your Apple account and Linux doesn't persuade you into setting up any online accounts just to install it.

There comes a time where you should stop using Windows and consider switching to an alternate OS, perhaps now is your time.

Yes, the classic case, lmao. You'll be completely safe on a different OS!

emphatic, the odds of you having a keylogger is probably super low. Did you just click a link, or did you actually download something? Have you reported your account to Facebook? Are you using Windows 10 or 11, and have you checked Defender or whatever antivirus you have for anything flagged? If you're feeling worrisome, you could always try something like Malwarebytes to run a separate scan.

Me and also a friend has reported the abuse to Facebook (he's been reporting a lot of the spam to FB as hijacked account)l. I've been trying some of Facebook's own methods to try and recover my account, including taking a photo of my drivers licence and uploading it to their support as proof the account is rightfully mine, because the other way of getting it back involves me having to be successfully logged in - which of course isn't possible as I can't access the app to provide the 2-party login security. It's like an absurd joke.

I will try Malwarebytes, but I think it's no longer free...

Malwarebytes is still free, but with the amount of nagging they do for their premium subscription service, you'd be excused for thinking otherwise ..

People who use rolls and rolls and rolls of brown tape. Especially when others are close by.

The noise it makes drives me up the wall. There is quiet brown tape, and fucking noisy brown tape. But it doesn't state which you're buying on the label. My wife is behind me right now sending a big box loaded with 3 rolls of the shit.

It's gotten pretty naggy for sure.

Related note, someone recently asked me what I used for autofire in Bayonetta, I recommended JoyToKey, they thanked me, and I thought all was well.

Then they proceeded to spam me with whiny messages asking "do I really have to pay for a license" and "where is the free version? is there a free version?". Deleted that shit and blocked 'em. It's especially given JoyToKey isn't naggy in any way and is essentially "please support us if you can" freeware that doesn't block any functionality or unlock anything new if you pay for a license:
JoyToKey is a shareware. You can freely download it and evaluate it without any limitation in functionality, but after trial for continued usage, please consider purchasing a license key from JoyToKey application menu.

I haven't used Malwarebytes in a long time. My routine for Windows 10/11 is:

OS: Change / disable some default Windows privacy settings (check guides for this). I always turn an obscure feature called Data Execution Prevention to its fullest setting - nothing has ever complained except for Half-Life (which can be easily fixed with an exception).

The browser: Firefox, Noscript, uBlock Origin (I tried Ghostery, Reddit seems to intentionally break it). Firefox is pretty good at detecting and blocking unwanted software. I don't care about IP blocklists and HOSTS files anymore. Noscript forces you to manually approve scripts for sites in the rare cases they're needed. It's tedious to get some sites working, but Noscript's blocking usually makes them safer and less broken.

Installing programs: Check out sandboxes if you install stuff you don't trust. VMs can work but they are slow and don't seem to play well with graphics. I have played around with trying to install untrusted software in Sandboxie - like games (not trusted digital distribution services like Steam or the GOG Galaxy client, they're fine). Sandboxie's own service is a bit weird, though; I'm not sure if it's got good compatibility with games, and just dealing with installation and folders is also weird. It's very easy to clean it out, though, and it's the closest-to-the-metal thing I'm aware of for keeping mess out of your Windows installation.

Honestly? Facebook sucks. It's a bad site run by bad people doing bad things with your information. Even if you get your account back, it's basically a life keylogger. Yeah, I know, there's good people there too. Overall, though, it is bad and it brings shame on us all. Not sure if it's as bad as Tiktok, though, which is a place where service workers go to post videos that get them fired.

Speaking of Windows annoyances: Microsoft still can't be bothered to report the Friendly Names of drives when you're installing Windows (word to the wise: the thirty seconds it takes to physically unplug the drives you don't want to overwrite? worth it). Thankfully, nothing of value was lost and the folder structure for files I care about is evident to my data recovery software. But it's extremely annoying. The recovery software is also a bit annoying, too, even beyond the things I don't blame it for like a 8tb drive taking an entire day to scan.

I think the videos you're talking about are just dumb clickbait as you're describing, and probably don't shed a light on much.
But the point you're talking about ambiguous endings is interesting. Personally I've been looking up explanations for movies and such many times, and I don't really think there's anything bad about that - I think it's a good use for the internet, and any videos on the subject that are actually relevant and well made definitely have their place. Though personally I'd always look up an article on the subject over a video, since I think this is one of many examples of the video format simply being too gated for most quality content.

Of course it's just gonna be one person's interpretation, but just like a good reviewer makes their own subjective opinions evident, I think a good "explanation" of any work of art also takes all potential ambiguity into account, and tries to focus on what are more likely to be reliable conclusions - such as the themes covered, emotions conveyed, and the director's intent.

I most recently did this just the other day after having finally gotten around to watching Denis Villeneuve's Enemy from 2013. The movie has a very ambiguous ending, and even though it's very very clear about the themes it wants to cover (it basically knocks you over the head with topics of relationships and control), I had a hard time identifying the actual narrative in relation to that. It's kinda crazy I had to go through multiple interpretations that were very blatantly wrong (and one which just retold the events of the movie as if they were all literal) before I found one which lined up with my own idea of the story. As a general rule I guess, try to avoid those clickbaity style websites, and pop culture "magazines". :P
Reading it, I didn't feel like it told me anything new, it was basically just saying things that I recognized from my own conclusions, but seeing it all written down like this massively helped me gather my thoughts and make much better sense of it all, and rethink some of the obvious clear symbols I'd completely forgotten to consider (such as Anthony removing his ring - duh!). It also did cover a few interesting details I'd missed completely, and most importantly it defines a clear intent for the ending which moves so fast in the actual movie that it's hard to even catch the main character's sudden decline right after you think everything has already been settled.
It's obviously a pretty evocative movie that's stayed with me a while after watching it. So go see it if you haven't. :)

When possible, I recommend "starting from scratch" and searching the Library of Congress images directly--versus falling in love with a photo and trying to get access to it.

The larger problem is that Getty had been caught sending out threats and demanding payment for images they don't own. A lot of people don't have the time or resources to fight, so they have a lot of opportunities to cash in.

Here's a high profile example:
https://www.latimes.com/business/hiltzi ... story.html

Highsmith lost her case on a series of technicalities. Valid under the law, but still technicalities. Imagine her surprise when she was sent a legal threat and bill for her own photo.

In other news, the civil lawsuit involving RICO continues and Getty had not been able to get it dismissed.
That one is in arbitration.
https://casetext.com/case/cixxfive-conc ... images-inc

Getty already settled with another media company named Zuma for stolen sports photos--after failing to get everything dismissed using loopholes. Naturally, the details weren't released. It appears Getty may have also removed some watermark information from photos??

It appears that Getty may be in the business of Googling photos, downloading them, removing watermarks, adding their own watermark, and selling them. At least that's what appears to be going on. Obviously, thousands of photos shouldn't accidentally end up in a company's IP catalog.
