Man I'm really not looking forward to Microsoft stopping to publish security updates for Windows 7 in 2020

Best practice is to immediately check the logs in safe mode. You don't know what you're doing.

Updates can and will be buggy. Windows runs on a staggering amount of different hardware configurations and many people mess around disabling core features without fully understanding what they are doing.

Of course, you could just run Android and never see any updates at all after a year and a half. That's even better. not.

Yeah this is insane, and 10 is the worst Windows ever been at this century.

There's been a flood of cheap (though not necessarily in price) laptops with a N3060 and 4GB ram, something in that area of weakness, and Win 10 + FUCKTONS of bloatware, more than I have ever seen.
The things crawl and cry in pain and horror right from the first boot, you'd need about two full days to kill all the shit and do the updates before the thing can be used to even just browse the internet.

@dude+orange: I couldn't get into actual safe mode, I think that acer boot up changed some things and the machine was crawling at the same time, I lost patience.
but yeah what i suspect is that she actually cut off several updates in the middle of installing, like she closes and unplugs when she's done no matter what's on the screen, but redoing all that shit would have taken me the day and i had to leave.
told her to power off from desktop properly and let updates finish, but I don't think she understood what I meant. computers are completely alien to people of her age.
what can you do with that? to me it's almost as criminal as etting them drive a car when they can barely walk or see/hear anymore. I men these old people typing with one finger they try to buy stuff on the internet an even browse porn, what could go wrong?

Frankly, I don't think most people should be running a full featured OS machine right now.

There's no point.

Grandma needs to buy an iPad every few years. That will do everything she needs. That also gives her access to customer service to hold her hand.

Windows is a full operating system with robust features that most users will never use or need. Managing a Windows, Linux, or Mac machine is a hassle and it's always been too complicated for most users. And, Microsoft doesn't seem to care rather or not average people can handle the responsibility.

My biggest frustration with Windows 10 is how limited and mislabeled Windows 10 Home is. The most convenient and poweful management features aren't there, but the Home version adds nothing to "simplify" using the OS. Instead of getting a simplified and easier to use "Home" version, users just get fewer features. That's not really a version designed specifically for Joe or Jan Paycheck or Granny.

It's not designed for people to use at home, it just has features ripped out.

I've seen and even owned one at one point. All I could do was rip the HDD out, stick in an SSD and clean install. Not even worth dealing with slow ass HDD full of garbage.

I've lost count of how many times I've tried to look up how to deal with problems or change some behavior with Windows and find that the OFFICIAL response someone got (or the official help page for something on Windows website) advocates Registry editing. Even sometimes for things that don't actually need it, like making it so that you don't have to type your password in when booting up the computer.

I was checking the average price of laptops just a little bit better and coming with a Pro build; just about 100 zeni more over the first prices gets you one.

Yet besides general stores and alike, even computer shops sell mainly those useless bottom-end Home shites (now along with 10 S ones for the same price)

Windows has always been fairly tweak friendly until 10. I never had an update patch break something or go into a broken update loop because of a modification I made before 10. After 10 though, it's obvious MS doesn't care about anyone trying to modify things even slightly and installing anything besides basic security patches is almost going to guarantee something gets broken. I get the hint. If they don't want me to change things, and I can't stand how the OS runs without modifications, I'll prob. have to migrate away from Windows eventually, or keep one PC for Windows only shit (games basically lol) and another Ubuntu/Linux one for general use.

I think even Classic Shell guy gave up. Windows is just moving in a completely different direction now. http://www.classicshell.net/forum/viewt ... f=4&t=8147

oh man, fuck this shit so hard
100% disk access
one core maxed out the entire time
some windows update service bullshit hogging the CPU for hours without any sign of letting up
and all I really wanted to do was play some KOF98 on the shitty old laptop while my main machine ran its own updates [would have just booted into Linux on the shittop, but lol AMD video drivers -- that machine runs Windows entirely to play games]
eventually, I got it to finish its bullshit and not hog my CPU and thrash like crazy with disk access, but this shouldn't even be a concern

I've reinstalled Windows 10 far more than any other version [including ME], because that's pretty much the only thing that works to keep it going.
Had a machine that came with 8 that I got for my dad, was a fairly cheap if decently snappy machine, all seemed A-OK.
MS rolled out the practically forced Windows 10 updates, and my dad ended up refusing to use the machine because it was so slow. Reinstalled Windows, solved the issues.
the problem is that when he doesn't use it, updates pile up, and then when he does bother to pull it out, it's slow as piss because it's busy updating [because it will ignore your "safe" hours if it goes for too long without updating]

should probably just put 8 back on, but support ends pretty soon
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

@null1024: exactly that. similar problem i've seen with lots of people since about a year or two; they're using their pc only about an hour or so few times a week at most.

Also something that's been very widespread lately; half-installed antivirus or anti+firewall suites, running along an active Defender.
At some point Microsoft changed some rules in Defender to make it label competing software as if they were common viruses, stopping their full install halfway, basically ending up 'sharing' the job lol (both software's processes running, isn't that amazing)
People simply don't realize, just 'my computer is slow' 'how come avast dont update anymore' etc

Oh yay I've come straight in at fuck Windows 10.

Because, fuck Windows 10. New Surface. Windows Update tries to install the latest feature update before it's done the Surface firmware updates. Fails. Tries to download it again. Fails. Tried to do a factory reset. Fails even at that. Third attempt pending.... going to have to leave it overnight because it takes forever between the download, the preparing (why are you always preparing? Just go!) and the actual install which gets to about 70% and then I swear I could.get this done faster using punch cards.

My creaky desktop Win 7 machine has had a couple of borked Windows updates but usually nothing a manual install of the monthly security rollup couldn't fix. Oh wait you can't even do that with Windows 10. Just one big feature update whose only testing appears to be the patience of customers.

I generally agree about Win 10.

On my personal machine, the only issues I frequently run into is sometimes not being able to log in because of my microsoft account, but this generally goes away after a few tries.

And apps I've not downloaded from the MS Store proudly placing themselves in my start menu.

In reality this is all unacceptable of course but they somehow get away with it.

True it's also packed with Crosoft's home-made bloatware apps 'n shit
Theirs + the manufacturer's, and often some additional useless shit software the reseller managed to bundle with the computer to the poor customer
All combined that's a monstrous pile of shit.

Oh btw the guy who sold that crap to the old lady was so nice he installed a full avast! waiting for payment (and yeah he didn't notice Defender partially blocked it), some dead Firefox links on the desktop, a ClassicShell stuck because of some shit, made her a Skype account without explaining to her what it's for (i had to show her the camera and mic, she wasn't aware)
he also encouraged her to get facebook and twitter accounts and she asked me many times what those were for

I don't know how much she paid for all that shit but seeing she's almost deaf and in a wheelchair he delivered and installed himself at her's. so I'm guessing a lot.
Idgaf about general stores/supermarkets etc but this ass is meant to run a computer store, he's a licensed technician/repairman too.
Some people in this business just need to get beat up and their store destroyed.

And I've seen earlier that the very first prices even come with only 2GB of RAM.

Yeah my mom's got one of those cheap Home Win 10 laptops too, it's an Atom with 4GB and a small SSD, but somehow it still manages the minimim without hanging I think because of the SSD, and the fact she powers it on for a couple of hours every couple of days or so.
Without the SSD, and less frequent use, bet she would be in trouble like most users.

Minimum hardware requirements mean shit both for Microsoft and manufacturers, otherwise there wouldn't be so many literally useless Win 10 machines in the wild.

have exactly that, can confirm
pretty much half the reason I rolled back to the Windows 7 this laptop came with was b/c the damn thing would randomly need half a day to update sometimes. Programs and drivers randomly needing to be re-installed (including some of the default W10 apps like Photos lmao) after updates wasn't helping matters.

I woke up at half 1 in the morning so I checked it, by some miracle it had worked this time and it managed the others without issue. But wow, the "feature" update that took forever. Well because mine went a bit tits up I see why it took ages. Dreading this being rolled out at work on a shitty HP laptop with a slow as fuck mechanical hard drive.

Yeah, it's doing an in situ upgrade of Windows. With a windows.old folder and everything. So it looks like what it was doing was downloading an entirely new Windows image (hence the lengthy download) and upgrading (hence the 3 odd hours to uodate when it actually worked). That is a pretty fucked up way of doing things.

I don't mind the OS itself so far - same memory footprint as Win 7, which is nice.

Windows 10 major revisions are basically upgrades of the whole OS, hence the windows.old folder, which is why things are breaking so often. It's like going from XP to Vista to 7 every time you're installing one. The patch image size is something like 3 GB. This is also getting to be a major issue for those with limited bandwidth and data caps. MS doesn't give you a way to stop it anymore, not even setting your connection to limited will stop the patch from downloading anymore.

It was especially annoying when I rolled back and had to set my connection to metered so the updates wouldn't come automatically. I have both intel hd 3000 and a geforce card and the "creator's" update didn't work well with that when it first updated. Thankfully, it now works great after nvidia updated their drivers.

Participating massively to the topic:

Annoyed that amazon sell so much while the product descriptions, and review-comments, are possibly the worst in quality and arrangement on the entire fucking internet.

Because of their formula from Hell: grouping different products together based on wrong and irrational assumptions, and group the review-comments and Q&A together too.

Absolute stupid, wrong, nonsense. And the majority of the customers unknowingly support that nonsense by writing more stupid shit.

Yet billions of sales through their platform, the worst website sells the most.

That most of the reviews are written by morons is usually a bigger problem. Amazon did once show which edition was being reviewed when they first started grouping but that was years ago. But still, you have to deal with pages of shit like:

1 star, did not arrive in time for Christmas you ruined Christmas you tax dodging bastards
5 stars, my son enjoyed it
3 stars, a bit expensive
1 star, got a bootleg copy because I'm too thick to spot a dodgy seller

It's pretty painful, but they're little better elsewhere to be honest. Good reviews are hard to find.

Yeah, a lot of people are also giving 1 star because they ordered an item that wasn't actually compatible with their setup -_-

well I mean the really incomplete products descriptions on amazon + grouping are like steroids mixture for moron customers, they're crossfiring

I've seen a page for a laptop, actually grouping 14 different configurations, all with different specs and os etc
only 36 comments and it's a complete trainwreck already
57 questions, most with wrong and confused answers

I ordered the wrong USB-C cable because of that crap, but thankfully I got a refund and found what I was looking for.

It's frustrating trying to find the right product sometimes. It actually took quite a bit of searching to find the newest release of Toy Story 2 with Blu-ray and digital because the site wouldn't even let me get to it directly when I clicked on another release of Toy Story 2.

My brother, my best friend and i we had 3 tickets for a Magnum (UK band) concert in Aschaffenburg last saturday.
Over the whole day we got so drunk that we went to our hotel at 6 PM but nobody set a wake up alarm, so we woke up when it was 10 PM and the concert nearly over.
That sucks so hard...i decided to drive to Wuppertal alone next saturday to finally see Magnum.
