PS3 Sonic's Genesis collection vs PS2 Sega Genesis Collectio

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

Is there any real reason to purchase "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection" when I own the PS2 compilation "Sega Genesis Collection". Did they just add an awful upscailer that destroys pixel art for the PS3? I love the Genesis I'm just curious why I might want to purchase two nearly identical games.

No, this game is not Space Invaders.

The PS3 one has the Streets of Rage Trilogy. There you go.

Seriously, there's a lot of solid gems, that's just the highlight.

I have them both, since they're both cheap, but if only one, get PS3's.

Is the PS2 one good emulation (full framerate, not stretched, decent sound), and is it in low res?

I may be the only one who thinks this, but I feel that there is some kind of blurry filter going on with the PS2 collection. It certainly doesn't look the same as say, my Treasure Box collection, running at 240, but it does look like it interlaced. It also looks blurrier than it's Virtual Console equivalents. But others may have to say something about that, as I haven't heard anyone else complain. But for me, it's noticeable. It's not bad, but it's certainly there.

I have both and I prefer the look of the PS2 version. It runs at 480p which is full frame, progressive scan. But you have to go into the options to enable progressive scan, because it defaults to interlaced mode.

The PS3 compilation has the Streets of Rage series, the Shining Force series, a few arcade games (Shinobi, Fantasy Zone, Altered Beast) and the original Phantasy Star. You need to ask yourself if these games are worth a new purchase for you.

I picked up the collection yesterday. I have to put some time into these. I'm almost ashamed to say that I have to get used to beating a platform game in one sitting again. It is a bit had to go from the modern save anyplace notion to actually having to work to get good at something. Aside from shmups it is amazing how many games had no battery save. Nice to see Dynamite Headdy too. Never played it before.

PS3 compilation has Beyond Oasis which makes it the winner by a large margin.

I mean really now both comps are about the same-price but one features nearly double the games and better ones at that(including the underrated Golden Ax Warrior).
Plus the PS3 version has zero load-times, a better UI, and better emulation(no sound issues in Phantasy Star IV).
