Not my recent watch but I wholeheartedly recommend Shoot 'Em Up (aka Rail Shooter: The Game: The Movie) starring Clive Owen. It's one of the closest thing of videogame movie looking and satire take of Bugs Bunny/Elmer Fudd. The main character and villain even eat carrots and have bald head.

Oh shit, I totally overlooked the Bug Bunny v Elmer Fudd thing! :o However I sure as shit didn't overlook *BAM* "Eat yer vegetables," that's a black comedy/action/horror kill for the ages.

Makes me wonder if you could kill a snowman by slamming his carrot nose back into his brain Image

And...shit no, actually you're warned just before the final scene that it won't be the same as in history (Tex says charlie told them to go to that house), and as cool as the final showdown is, I couldn't help but think the rest of the film is essentially a gallery show of that era and culture Tarantino is a nostalgic fan of.

Well, I have to disagree, because to me, most that's being presented from the beginning (while being cool) is being used during the finale in a great way typical from Quentin Tarantino.

Spoiler: show
For example:

* Rick Dalton's declining career and how he feels he has very little to lose at this point
* The weight of the cans of dog food
* The introduction of the flame thrower

To me, it doesn't matter if the subject matter is "thin" when the delivery is wonderful.

The Angry Birds Movie 2:. *1/2

What a trainwreck this was. The first Angry Birds Movie was the type of movie that succeeded mostly by merit of exceeding extremely low expectations. This one was just a frenetic Technicolor masterclass in how NOT to make an animated film. It takes what could have made an interesting premise (an ongoing prank war between the birds and the pigs) and throws it out five minutes in for a far less interesting plot. The film also seems to constantly insert short snippets of licensed music as though its characters were going up to bat in a baseball game, there's a pointless B plot that contributes basically nothing to the story, and the film's villain basically gets off with no consequences whatsoever for committing what was pretty clearly mass murder (in a PG rated film too) and can't seem to make any jokes that don't involve potty humor. Probably made enough money at the box office that they'll keep dragging this franchise out for as long as they got away with it though.

I think that's fair, although after the pivotal moment in the film you still have an hour or so left for the denouement, which I guess is appropriate for a three-act structure. If anything I think the slowness of the first third of the film kind of works in its favor, since it gives you an idea of the mundanity involved with being a low-level criminal (albeit one in this case who participates in some remarkable historical events). A lot of the stuff that gets set up in the first third of the movie gets paid off later on (the scene with the lawyer to cite one example) so if you were to make cuts there you'd probably half to cut both front and back. The length felt appropriate me for the scope of the story, but I definitely think Scorsese is criminal for not having added an intermission to the theatrical release :D

When I heard of the length I was like "no way I'm going to Music Box for that". 2.5 hours is my max.

I went out for drinks w/ some friends last night and two of them were like, "I'm an hour in... gonna finish it later". I guess for Netflix it's forgivable but then you gotta ask, why not just split it up into a 4 episode series? (Answer: Academy Awards).

Once Upon a Time in Holywood (2019)
God, what a mess of a story. Everything just goes all over the place, showing that one actress (and her disgusting feet, fuck you Quentin), and how pretty she is, and hey look some has-been just threw Bruce Lee into a fucking car, wow!
That aside, I loved how they went ahead to portray the late 60's settings, down to the movies and TV shows. Shame Quentin also skipped what would my best personal part, filming with Corbucci. Oh well.

The Irishman (2019)
Scorsese did a fantastic movie with an unnecessary long length. Frankly, since this was going on Netflix, a three parter mini-series would have worked splendidly, with few creativity cuts. Thankfully, nothing really got bogged down my the long length, besides my ass.
The CG used to make our three badass motherfuckers younger and older is still a bit weird to see, but not more unsettling than using it to "revive" actors that have passed away already, one of them for YEARS now, like Peter Cushing in Star Wars.

Planes Trains and Automobiles (1987)
A funny late 80's comedy with Steve Martin and John Candy, who are trying to reach home by Thanksgiving through multiple transportations.

Well, the part with Bruce Lee (which funnily enough upset the Lee estate enough for them to post a statement about it on Facebook) was part of
Spoiler: show
Cliff daydreaming while fixing the antenna and not actually part of anything taking place in the story.

The "pretty actress" is supposed to be Sharon Tate who in reality was murdered by Charles Manson's gang on the 9th of August in 1969 along with the other people staying in her house that night.

Two more Spike Lee movies removed from my backlog, neither were particularly great, but they were watchable.

Mo' Better Blues - Denzel Washington plays a jazz musician who is having a conflict of egos with one of his bandmates (played by Wesley Snipes) while having a relationship with two different women. The movie plays out as you would expect, with Denzel's arrogance and carelessness ultimately leading to a premature end to his career. There's some nice music and the scene where Denzel get his ass handed to him by Samuel L. Jackson and Radio Raheem was pretty brutal, but the ending afterward felt pretty contrived with Denzel pussy-begging his way into marrying one of his love interests.

Jungle Fever - Wesley Snipes plays an architect who has an affair with his hot Italian secretary and their lives are torn apart after his wife find out. For some reason, the wife seems to be more upset over the fact that he slept with a white woman rather over the fact he was having an affair in the first place. The movie purports itself to be an examination of interracial relationships, but it never really goes anywhere with it. By the end of the movie, Wesley Snipes somehow magically patches things up with his wife, while his lover moves back to her racist abusive father. There's a sub-plot involving Wesley Snipes' junkie brother (played by Samuel L. Jackson) that feels like it's from a completely different movie.

Dat ending tho'

I've been watching The Irishman for 30 minutes. I think I'm going to have to stop. It looks weird as fuck. How come deep fakes look better than this? Is it worth getting through or is it yet another step down from Goodfellas?

You can read my no spoilers take on it. I'd say it's a step down from Goodfellas. Pesci seems somewhat reserved in his old age.

I love Parasite and Snowpiercer, but The Host is an aggressively bleak film. Maybe that's the point, but I was expecting high octane kaiju action(the first scene is something else), then it becomes really harsh character drama. The ending really soured me on it.

Honestly, that was the best part, finally seeing Pesci play someone other than the heavy. He's great in it.

I wasn't a big fan, since it's basically yet another Scorsese Fall From Grace mob film, but the denouement was something else. The epilogue really gets you.

Crooklyn (1994) - The fourth movie in the Spike Lee Joint Collection, although it doesn't feel like a usual Spike Lee movie (likely because he didn't write the script this time and his role is a relatively minor one). Basically a coming-of-age story of a young black girl living in Brooklyn during the 1970's as she goes through many ups and downs. There's a certain part of the movie where the girl is sent off to spent her vacation with her aunt and adoptive cousin, in which the movie inexplicably changes aspect ratio. Not my cup of tea, but it was alright. David Patrick Kelley has a minor role where he plays the neighborhood weirdo who gets bullied by the kids.

Waterworld (1995) - For all of its legacy as a box office flop, this was not as bad as I was expecting it to be. The world is pretty well thought-out and there's some impressive stunt-work from Costner, but he doesn't come off as a very convincing anti-hero when he actually forced to interact with the supporting characters. I bought the 4k steelbook from Best Buy, which claims to feature both, the theatrical and extended cut on HD, so I kinda assumed they were both on the regular Blu-ray. However, I didn't read the fine print and it turns out the 1080p transfer of the extended cut is only on the 4k disc as a bonus feature. There's a collector's edition from Arrow that has the extended cut as a regular Blu-ray, so I might look into that.

Watched the original Star Wars trilogy for the first time. What can I say, it's garbage :) I can perfectly see the historic value and nostalgia factor, though, especially for American kids of the era. It was an insufferable Sunday, but worthwhile for the educational value; so many memes were explained today.

The trailer made it seem like a comedy, but this is black humour at it's finest. Strongly recommended watching, the hype is real. A shame it probably won't be more widespread due to the language barrier.

It's Korean, but we have English subtitles, yes?

I'm curious to hear your opinion of Kurosawa's "The Hidden Fortress."

That's actually one I still haven't seen. But what's the connection?

Also, Parasite is indeed very good.

Well, at least the Ghostbusters: The New Batch trailer doesn't have anything like the "power of Patty" in it. It's actually refreshing it doesn't try to be "funny" or the standard star wars trailer...

Yeah, like that, and with a smiley. Leave trolling to amateurs, pick a real fight like "COME AT ME NERDS!"

BALLSY kane! really BALLSY. 8)

In your place I'd have picked Back to the Future tho.

EDIT; well it's aged, can't deny that, but back then it was the shit, it really was, people who've missed some references while those were in sync with their era wouldn't know. trying stuff decades late doesn't really work.

Oh come on, you know my trashing of Star Wars comes from a place of love :) Over the past month I watched The Fury of a Patient Man, Parasite, Frances Ha, and Burning. I think we'll all agree that Star Wars caters to a different audience, possibly from a different time. I stress that I'm not disputing its historic (and not just historical) value.

R2 and C3PO basically are the two main guys from HF. Also HF is a better movie but you would expect that being a Kurosawa film.

Back to the Future is actually good though. It has actual characters and features actual power struggles with actual personal stakes. (Stakes the audience can vicariously empathize with. Like Marty's precious chastity. Or Doc's internal organs.)

Star Wars is just murder porn with good special effects and muppets.

Quote:
R2 and C3PO

The first thing our hero does in the films is visit the illegal slave market to buy a couple of black market slaves. One of his slaves understandably tries to run away, and Luke the slave catcher goes after him.

The questions droids raise and are never explored in the films are so much more interesting than the massive amount of murder hobo stuff the films spend their time on. Why give droids sapience? Why give droids free will? Why make them able to feel pain?

Like so many other things, it's a blank canvas with nothing drawn on it. A perfect feel-good empty void for those who hate being bothered with questions of morality.
