i don't think it's ever gotten a western release, full-stop. the only blu-ray release is a hard-to-find compilation of three of his movies that'll run you about 15k (yen) if you're lucky enough to find a yahoo listing and 20k to 25k depending on if you want it used or new on jp amazon. i've only ever watched a subbed dvd rip, been meaning to try and find the blu-ray release somewhere for download and do a rewatch for a while.

it's a beautiful film that i imagine would be superb in high definition.

last seen upholding the nuremberg laws as Good, Actually. this place is pretty lenient on the politics of its members, but there is apparently a pale that one can still travel beyond. an opinion like that coming out on any gaming forum seems completely absurd. i miss the simple, naive days back when the most politics you'd tend to see on gaming boards was how wrong jack thompson was.

Believe it or not I'm really against pirating at this point when I can buy something (as in what I do, I don't care what other people do if they wanna pirate go nuts) but in a situation where it's just not released I guess it's my only option to watch it.

I'm pretty anti-ban, anti-heavy handed modding etc... but honestly not sad to see Zen gone. You can't just say that level of awful shit and stick around.

i mean you *could* buy the japanese blu-ray secondhand (since i think it stopped distribution years ago) and then rip it and use the dvd subtitle file, i guess? i think the dvd version still sees distribution and you can get it for under 2k. if you find a way to download the blu-ray anywhere, pls hook me up.

i really feel like the forum would be better off without it. even those batting with sophisticated and informed opinions aren't likely to find very stimulating debate on here, and it initially put me off joining the forum, at all. since joining i've come to understand people aren't actually as predominately right-winged as i once thought and have more of a chill "live and let live" vibe going on, but it does not look that way to an outsider. i remember around when i joined there was the cuphead thread that has since been cleaned up but originally had a couple people angrily going on about killing the 'tranny' who reviewed it. kinda spooked me and was a big part of why i was a bit more combative/paranoid in my early days on here.

over time, i feel like i've come to understand the forum has a relaxed attitude toward people being really coarse and that there's no implicit agreement with those saying that kinda stuff or hivemind bullshit going on. but, y'know, when you're peering in from the outside or having just stepped in, the lack of anyone stopping to go "hey that is over the line" for something like a month or more made it feel like the forum's general attitude. i've come to like this place a lot and enjoy that it has really neutral moderation (and would take it over the weird sjw-party autocracy at resetera in a heartbeat), but i think the politics thread and seepage of politics into some threads puts a lot of people off and is part of why the new member growth is so minimal.

Oh rad, my original post on the matter is still there, despite a bunch of angry boys barging in and spoiling my pristine takedown of the two miscreants in question. :o Three actually, if you count the bumbling outrage at the root of the fiasco, one Dean Takahashi. But nobody could ever own him as comprehensively as that one pigeon did.

Hacks these days. Charlatan-ass motherfuckers! Image You need laser precision to strike down their bad gaming (and even worse writing) without hitting one of the myriad charges packed into the standard-issue ISM tactical suicide vest. It's easy when you are the mere shell of a man, nothing more than a killing machine!

Image

^ that's ME when a shitty Gaming Opinion appears in my vicinity! it's nothing personal, but you are going to fuck up my nightmarish hardcore future world!

(Jesus, that feels a lot longer than two years ago. I had to think hard about WTF this post was even referencing. I LOL HARD when I remembered though! Image)

If I could find an individual release for $30-40 I'd do it, but the only thing I could find is that anthology release that is 15k yen. A bit too steep for me.

amazing lol. the fiasco over that guy really astonished me, honestly! i couldn't believe that anyone would jump to his defense, but huge swathes of people were doing so. felt purely like a weird political ideology thing over whether games even have the right to be difficult or not. i've gone on enough rants about how much i hate that shit, though!

important for me to step back and remember that Image

here here. The idea of a newbie coming to shmupsforum and getting the perception that it's a bunch of hardcore rightwingers is frankly appalling. Everything in life is political, and it's hard to avoid politics in this day and age especially, but we shouldn't let this stuff seep into putting people off the hobby.

That said, I think the hyper-elitist attitude of many forum members is probably as or more offputting to a lot of potential users, and I don't even mean that as a bad thing—I've always considered this a place for people with extensive knowledge and refined taste in games, and although I'm sure the elitism is offputting to many I also think that those inclined will eventually find their way here. It's part of the culture, for better or worse.

first was possession (1981)

a completely absurd work that the director filmed during a messy divorce. the genre is listed as "psychological horror drama," but it's genuinely as much of a comedy, at times. it goes through an incredible range of cathartic venues (from extreme domestic brutality to mental breakdowns - all handled with both appropriate gravity and a self-satirical sense of humor through deliberate overacting) and feels like one of the most honest and ugly movies i've ever watched. this is one of those films i imagine an audience would be dead quiet for, though i can't imagine the director not intending the audience to laugh. really great movie.

This is not my favorite horror film, but it is in my opinion one of if not the most effective and scary horror movies ever made. Your comment about the comedic aspect is kind of surprising to me; I can definitely see it, but as someone who as a child experienced a lot of really intense pitched battles between my parents, I didn't find any of it funny (except maybe some of the Heinrich/Heinz Bennent bits). I can see how one might classify some of Sam Neill's scenes as overacting, but in my opinion Isabelle Adjani's performance is absolutely fucking incredible and her breakdowns and melodrama perfectly nail the insane tenor of a highly dysfunctional relationship. I don't know if you've ever been in a relationship like that, but I have, and if you think about it, there is a certain level of performance that goes into any argument where both parties are intentionally raising the stakes because the other person has just made a gambit that has to be reacted to. I think this movie nails that dynamic perfectly and is brilliant for that alone.

Also, the thing that I think makes Possession so scary in contrast to your typical horror film is that it's all about the psychological and physical violence that people who love each other can inflict on one another. Much much scarier than witches or serial killers or things that go bump in the night.

i have been in a relationship like that (as have the other two people i watched it with - complete with abusive parents, too), and i completely agree with this. when i say "deliberate overacting," i'm talking about how they completely let themselves go. rolling around on the walls, shrieking on the floor, deliberately avoiding eye contact or verbal response as an act of hostility, etc. it is over-the-top in a way another director would consider overkill - so extreme i don't think it could have been pushed any further - but honest to the point of it being unnerving. the director absolutely understands some of the worst depths of the human condition and i have no doubt was living through them before making the film (and probably during it).

maybe i've been through enough trauma in my life (csa survivor, suicide attempt survivor, been beaten and once told to tell class i 'fell down the stairs', been stalked, had a partner calmly offer to murder me when suicidal and nearly took them up on it, been intimate with someone who probably committed 2nd-degree murder, i could go on lol) to be a bit brain-damaged in my perception of the film, but i frankly suspect the director has, too. i really do think he intended a great deal of the movie to be morbidly comical. something my friend said during the movie was "boy, this is making me feel really good about my life, right now." we've gained enough distance and emotional security to have a laugh at how horrible it is, and i feel the film's director was getting to that point, himself, and using the movie to hit that point of catharsis. whether you read it is as horror or comedy, i think it's a damned honest movie.

i hate to recommend it again immediately after having just brought it up and only recently having watched it for the first time, but i really stress giving eros + massacre a go if you're into movies exploring the extremes of dysfunctional relationships. i would sincerely call it the most honest and truthful movie i have ever watched - though if you've never explored polyamory, you might not fully relate. it examines a historical figure from the 20's through the lens of the 60's (both notable times in japanese history that prevalent leftist movements were being snuffed by the powers that be) and feels smarter than anything from today. it really, really makes you feel infinitesimal to see everything you've been through having already played out unsuccessfully again and again throughout history. the filmmaker was marxist, himself, but the anti-humanist vibe and general feeling of erasure of 'self' in eros + massacre is so strong that i wouldn't fault someone for mistaking it as being anti-marxist.

i think the purported elitism here is a bit exaggerated at times, tbh, at least in the last year or two. i don't actively read the shmups section (not for lack of interest, i just have trouble focusing on broad areas) and already talked about this thread, elsewhere, but i think it's a good barometer. it took a while for that thread to devolve into the comedy did, and it only did so after a couple of pages of people giving really genuine suggestions, talking about how the new person's taste might not mesh with the forum, etc. i feel like a person getting bounced from a thread like that is the forum's natural immune system at work. you just lose some people to that and there's nothing you can do, but that's fine.

I'll definitely give it a go. I've been (re)watching a bunch of Seijun Suzuki shit recently so I feel like this slots nicely into that time and place.

She's an awesome actress alright, HOWEVER I've a major beef with the Żuławski the director, kinda-sorta rejecting his viewing of the world altogether. Same with the Public Woman film, just, a no, as of me.

Yeah, when it comes to Japanese or Hong Kong stuff anymore I almost solely DL it. JP stuff since a giant part of it will not have subtitles, so those are usually fan projects, and Hong Kong stuff is usually a mix of releases (again, fan-made usually). A lot of webrip stuff too you'll never get otherwise. A certain Asian private tracker that I get most of my stuff from has free registration now atm. PM if you want the link.

Eros + Massacre looks really good and fortunately it's in a decently priced trilogy box set from Arrow.

I also think it's a really powerful film. It's true horror, the horror of relationships, of life god damn it! I went out with a hot nutbag for a few years. It aged me. When I think of her I think of Possession. Amazing film but all the other Zulawskis I've seen haven't been very good. There is a great interview with him on YouTube where he talks about what Adjani has done to her face, saying he could see her go that way even back then.

ITS A HOLLYWOOD CAT FIGHT

TIM MILLER H8 JIMMY C

As antipathetic as I am towards Jimmy C, the ultimate Deadbeat Hollywood Dad of my generation, I have to side with him against TIMMY M - because ultimately, Tim's the one who directed a generic superhero flick, ie shat capeshit skittles all over the first two movies' classic tech-noir. Yeah I know, he probably had as much artistic control as the poor bastard who made your last Big Mac. But now he is bitching about it!

Also, burger dude may have risibly facile, reductive views of the first two films, but I wouldn't know, because he keeps them the fuck to himself where Timmy has spouted his guff all over the place.

LMAO I ROVE COMICS DOT COM wrote:
“The things [reactions] seemed to hate the most about the movie, were things I can’t control,” he said. “I can't control you didn’t like Genysis or you felt betrayed by Terminator 4. I can’t help that.”

Oh god it's all so terrible. MY GREAT MESSAGE FOR TIM MILLER:

Image

What am I saying. I don't have to side with either of these cunts. Yo modern blockbuster cinema is some sad shit but internet almost counterbalances that.

Image

Who's hyped for EPISODE XI? Image IDGAF about Star Wars but I'm glad for The Mandalorian apparently being alright! You poor fuckers deserve something good amidst all these Mystery Boxes ("Mystery Box" is my new pet name for "Dog Shit Bin").

Image

^ that's ME watching new Terminator and Star Wars movies!

EDIT: hey wait a sec, VVITCH dude did The Lighthouse? That sounds interesting. It already did, but Sumez mentioned it had dudes jerking off and the last time I saw something like that involving Willem Dafoe (Antichrist), he got up to all kinds of bad shit. He didn't jerk off (IIRC?), but he did get hit in the nuts really bad. :o

Well do those of us who argue against it at least make the thread a little more bearable for you?

Speaking for myself, I'm doing it for the lurkers, because silence equals assent.

Amazing film but all the other Zulawskis I've seen haven't been very good.

Reluctant to watch it myself, but I heard pretty compelling things about the most recent digital restoration of On the Silver Globe, especially the sound job, from its music composer on the radio, two summers ago, I think. Mentioning this (although I don't expect liking it any better than the original book) as the film was infamously miscarried to boot, so - assuming the restoration really did it justice - it might be... interesting to watch and listen to. "Remastering" is such a routine practice these days, yet it can easily become a mixed bag of a job on source material, so, a good one deserves at least a bit of publicity.

Countdown

Lots of people download a smartphone app that claims to provide a countdown of when they'll die; a curse is involved (never agree to terms and conditions!), and near the end of the countdown users see dead people.
It goes without saying that the plot focuses on users with a countdown of only hours of days, and among them a cluster of implausibly attractive ones in their twenties: the resourceful nurse Quinn as the "heroic" protagonist, destined to survive, a love interest she met by chance, and Quinn's younger sister to provide someone to save.
A funny tattooed priest, very enthusiastic about confronting the supernatural threats he has read about, suggests two options that should shut down the Countdown app for all: a curse victim dies before the appointed time (murder!), or later (life lesson: when you make a protective magic circle, try to stay inside). After attempting both Quinn goes with option C; surviving this adventure improves her relationship with her sister.

A highly mediocre supernatural "horror" B-movie, very incompetently written, with a few good sides (a couple of interesting scenes; a reasonable treatment of social media, stupid apps and SPOILER; a really beautiful actress) that fail to offset remarkably unclear and arbitrary supernatural "rules" that make the whole plot nonsensical and contradictory, a Darwin Award worthy supernatural entity who should have been easily disposed of a long time ago, stupid and unsympathetic characters who should die and innocent characters who die anyway, egregiously absurd hacking, distracting jump scares, and an ending that appears to contradict the few remaining expectations of dignity, drama and coherence but is followed by a cringeworthy transparent sequel hook that actually spits on the grave of the plot.

Some of On the Silver Globe is amazing, but then a lot of it is just super pretentious philosophical babble. When it plays it straight, like those dudes crashing on a planet and starting a tribe and all that, coupled with some of the imagery it's one of a kind; but once the characters start going into ridiculous monologues that stretch its already fractured runtime it gets pretty unbearable. A really ambivalent experience.

The Wicker Man (1973)
Weird British horror movie, about a very Christian police officer going to a island in the Hebrides to investigate a missing child, while finding that the islanders are all Celtic pagans. Christopher Lee is so jolly sinister here.
Very cool folk soundtrack too, keeps the story going and all.
Don't confuse this one with the poor 2006 remake with Nic Cage and his fantabulous crappy acting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhOgYN5SDQg

I don't think I've ever seen the 2006 one but I'm grateful to it all the same.

wtf the clip cuts off "AWBALLAHHHH MY EYESS"

i really hate that nic cage has gotten to be seen as this b-tier actor in recent days for taking on a bunch of shit roles, the guy is damn good when he's well-directed, imho :[ raising arizona is still definitely one of my favorite cohen brothers films and he's great in face/off!

Indeed, if that recent (upcoming?) Colour Out Of Space adaptation was starring, I don't know, Jai Courtney, I'd be nonplussed. Cage is a decent 50/50 shot at Good Good/Bad Good.
