Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

In all honesty a bit let down. Some great stuff in there no doubt, and really liked the third act, but I question the inclusion of a lot of things in the first two. Might do better on multiple viewings. Solid performances all around, but I was not enthralled nearly as much as I am on almost every other Quentin Tarantino outing.

I've been meaning to watch this. Is there by any chance a scene in there with a rock climber losing his grip and falling ending with a bloody nose as his security rope throws him against the rock? I remember seeing that clip on TV in the 80's but not having any clue where it's from.

I don't think that's in there... unless I blinked and missed it.

I'm hopeful. I enjoyed The Hateful Eight, and if critics say this is a superior film, I am optimistic (false positive?). Going to see the 70mm print of it at the Music Box this week.

Final Wars, now. That's a movie.

I can't tell if I like or... not quite dislike but less-than-like Final Wars. Much of what is there is incredible. But I get frustrated when the movie's human scenes look like a TV-show - a sentai show projected on big-screen. Maybe I shouldn't complain about production values in a Godzilla movie!! I suppose I shouldn't be too hard on a movie that is a giant love-letter to rubber suits and puppets. Will something like it ever be made again? Probably not.

I hated Final Wars. Like haaaaaaaated it. The director himself didn't even really like Godzilla in the first place and I think it shows. Real heavy reliance on CG junk, the fights are fast and boring, the side-plot is heavy nasty 2000's mediocre Japanese cinema, the music blows. It all sucks eggs. Man I hate that movie.

I could barely convince my gf to go in the reclining cinema for 2 hours and 40 minutes, so Music Box was out for me. Weird that I get the feeling some things will click better on the 2nd time. Maybe I was expecting something else? It's by no means bad... just a much slower burn than I was ready for. I quite enjoyed Hateful Eight as well.

I was considering seeing it at the music box ^ but I haven't really seen any tarantino flicks in theaters so I'm not really itching to see it asap.
last few movies I saw were

toy story 4 (at the davis theater) which was surprisingly better than the trailers led me to believe it would be.

escape from new york (at music box) for my birthday which nothing really needs to be said about that

villains (at music box part of cinepocalypse) which was exactly what I expected from the "teaser" released. fun seeing bill skarsgard in another new flick... which seems to be happening more frequently after his role as pennywise

I don't doubt they will have it again next summer like they do with most of those restorations (like 2001). it seemed to bring in a decent amount of people - I went on the 7th and for a sunday night 9pm show the theater was about 40% full.

I didn't really like any of them. Just watched because I was a fan of the comics.

Sweet Smell of Success (1957)
Noir with Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis. The sceneries of New York's night life, and the slimy cast trying to do well for themselves was brilliant. Some very fine dialogue too, as well as a lovely, if standard, jazzy score that fits the mood.

Hateful Eight Extended Cut - Released as a 4-part miniseries on Netflix, it clocks in at 210 minutes (vs the ~170 minute theatrical).

The four episodes of “The Hateful Eight: Extended Edition” are titled “Last Stage to Red Rock” (50 minutes), “Minnie’s Haberdashery” (51 minutes), “Domergue’s Got A Secret” (53 minutes), and “The Last Chapter” (56 minutes). The first three episodes match up to corresponding chapter titles in Tarantino’s theatrical cut. The film’s second chapter, “Son of a Gun,” has been absorbed into the extended cut’s first episode. The “Last Chapter” episode encompasses the final two film chapters: “The Four Passengers” and “Black Man, White Hell.”

10/10

Lost in Translation (2003)
Bill Murray is an ageing actor that goes to Tokyo to promote Suntory's whiskey. Scarlett Johansson is a college graduate that sits bored all day on her hotel while her photographer boyfriend is on assignment. Both are bored and trying to cope with the culture clash. Surprisingly, the former is not the focus of the movie, their personal problems are. Very interesting watch indeed.

Bought both movies as part of a dual pack from the Wal-mart bargain bin and they're pretty much what you would expect from a pair of B-movies being sold as a two-pack on a bargain bin. The first movie has a plot that doesn't make much sense if you think about it and the production values of a Power Rangers episode from the same period, and it's pretty much unwatchable garbage, but the second movie more than makes up for it with some semblance of a budget, actually exciting action scenes and a far more engaging plot, even though the final plot twist is pretty much telegraphed from the very beginning.

Spoiler: show
Seriously, if you have Kane Kosugi as the co-star in your movie who conveniently introduced after the protagonist's wife gets killed and he hasn't done anything interesting by the end, you can bet your ass he was the true bad guy all along.

One star for the first and three stars for the second.

I made my younger bro watch Rogue One and he liked it, wondering about what happens next after the ending. Guess it's a good start to watch ANH at this time. :)

One Cut of the Dead

An impressive combination of excellent writing, with a story that is told twice with every detail and every moment turned over its head, and brilliant technique (starting from the titular "one cut" of about half an hour, which might have an hidden break about halfway).
The plot is very special and vulnerable to spoilers, but let's say that it involves zombies (in a small cast setting: few deaths, and also few and resilient zombies) and aggressive people who like axes and self-defense techniques (good against zombies).

Very fun, recommended for all audiences except for sensitive people who are unable to consider gore and decapitations in their context.

Finished watching it, what a gem! Thanks for sharing your opinion, this movie would fly under my radar otherwise.

The blu ray for One Cut of the Dead is region free too, and it includes his original short the movie is based on. And like everyone has said, great movie. Even for the zombie tired this is something special about the craft and love of filmmaking, and the best zombie movie in years.

Kind of late to the party on Once Upon a Time, but I took the day off on a Wednesday to go see the 70mm print at the Music Box and thoroughly enjoyed it. In contrast to GaijinPunch's view, I thought the third act (and all the Sharon Tate stuff in general) was the weakest part—felt like Tarantino just needed some catharsis because he wouldn't have had an effective ending otherwise. The first two acts play like a generally plotless hangout movie, dipping in and out of genre and riffing on notions of aging and masculinity in an inventive and fun way—I frankly could have watched a whole movie of nothing but that and didn't need the penultimate scenes to walk out satisfied (although they do pay off stuff from earlier in the movie in a really fun way).

At the Music Box? My ass was hurting like it always does after a showing there. They have their 90th (I think?) anniversary coming up and I really hope they invest in some new upholstery to celebrate.

Also worth noting: I showed up to the 4:40 show about 20min beforehand and it was pretty easy to get a good seat. Came out of the theater and the line for the ~7:30 show stretched all the way to the end of the block.

Yeah, that sounds about right regarding both the seats and the lines. 4:40 would be hard for me to make.

I can't get my gf to go there for anything over 2 hours... new rule instated after viewing Mulholland Drive there. The seats probably haven't been redone since their opening 90 years ago.

Hobbs and Shaw

The only thing missing was the A team music. I really wish my friend would stop taking me to see movies where "breathing" is the most realistic thing in the movie.

I went to their all night horror marathon thing once and that was hellacious. Seriously thinking about investing in one of those football cushion things for future viewings.

Dumb and Dumber (1994)
One of the funniest 90's comedies I ever saw. Never saw it back in the day, for some reason, but it was crazy popular.
