Too short, too much style over substance and ma-ma character was poorly acted. Not a completely horrible movie as the action is quite well done but other than that, nothing amazing.

Wow do I ever disagree, except on the action front.

The movie has quite a bit of substance to it criticizing the punitive style of law enforcement, but the film is so light-handed with its preachiness that you can miss it the first time.

I also see Dredd as a counterargument to Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. In the Dark Knight you have junkies refusing to buy drugs because the bat signal's shining even though they have a greater chance of winning the powerball than getting punched by Batman. But if one thing is crystal clear in Dredd, it's that the drug lab is going to be started right back up, as soon as the judges leave, by some new gang willing to play the odds.

That's the great thing about Judge Dredd in general. Even though you're rooting for Dredd because he's the audience-eye-view, Judge Lex was right!

I love DREDD. So happy to see it in 3D in the cinema.

Minimalist Dredd. I found it a bore. Had the feel of a proof of concept short.

"Stylish" action film. This time with a fellow in a bad Dredd helmet. In a building. The end.

Karl Urban as Dredd? No, no ,no.
Oi, Urban, that "Dredd-mouth" . . . . STHAP! And that "Clint Eastwood" voice . . . NO!

And what is he wearing? Some class of weekend motorcyclist outfit.
Where is the gold, the green, the shoulders? Where is the chain?!

I suspect that those people who find this look acceptable, are also ok with this

When a character has such incredibly varied and entertaining backstories and your script basically gets beaten by The Raid (2011), you fucked up.

I reckon this film might well have finished Dredd on screen.

I saw the Macross movie "Do You Remember Love" in a movie theater yesterday. It was pretty spectacular visually.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macross:_ ... er_Love%3F

Having grown up during the Robotech era, I saw the series on TV and then watched "Macross" when it was available subtitled in the 90's. This was the first time I have actually seen the condensed movie form of the show.

Possible Spoilers below

Spoiler: show
My thoughts are that it was really well done considering that it's a single movie cut from 30 some odd episodes. However, I realized watching it that having the love story so out-front of the action was a little too much for me. In the series, we get to watch things unfold slowly over the course of a long war with many events transpiring between. It's actually too spread-out in some ways. But the movie takes a slice of the story and uses the background romances to create a structure for the events, tying it into the greater narrative of the Protoculture and the early humanoid split. It was an incredible piece of editing that is worth seeing, but if I ever wanted to see Macross again, I would go back to the series.

So the fashions ruined Dredd for you, Zen? Not enough spandex? Whatever, girlfriend!

What did you think of "Logan?" A tuxedo and a wife beater? For shame!

Boooring! Just a ripoff of "Shane!"

Dredd was fine, but not as big as the franchise deserves. The 90's movie is oddly more like the comics in many aspects.

They need to lean in on him being an unmovable facist hero in the next version. Show him arrest & sentence an old lady for having an unlicensed goldfish. It should also embrace the ridiculous humor of the comics & show us that Idiocracy meets RoboCop style society the Judges operate in.

The stakes could be higher as well, but it's not such a necessity in the first film if they reboot again. An Apocalypse War or Necropolis level story is sort of what they need to build towards. Everyone wants the Dark Judges.

As far as the uniform goes, it's kinda hard to make the comic version look good irl. Maybe do it but dull the color scheme & smooth the eagle down. The bike is important too, not a fan of the one in Dredd 3D.

There can never be a good enough excuse for a lack of flair, MM. Never!

This "Dredd", looked liked a bipedal seal, with a red bandanna. Unforgivable.

Logan (2017), was trash.
My mini review, here;
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=32519&p=1257345&hilit=Logan+2017+#p1257345

There were bigger fashion faux pas, than a dirty wife-beater, in that sorry film.

As for Jackman's outfits;
The man has the physique of an amateur swimmer. The Wolverine, he is not.

Judge Dredd has been a lot of different things in the hands of a lot of different authors. "America" is about as far from goofball Dredd as you can get.

And in the movie they have him arresting the bum for vagrancy. And for the robotic fascism you get this scene.

You're shitting on Logan... because flesh-and-blood human Hugh Jackman doesn't have the physique of a Rob Liefeld character?

Nah, I'm shitting on it because it is a Godawful film.

"flesh-and-blood", is no excuse.
Give me a 5' 6", 240lb, hyper andogenized Wolverine, or go home (a 35 year old, unknown, Jack Nicholson, after 15 years of lifting and chemistry, would be good)

Lanky blade-man doesn't cut it
Lou Ferrigno was more believable back in the 70's, as the Hulk, than Jackman is today as Wolverine.

I know, I just want it as strong in film as it is in the comics. It's treated so heavily in Dredd 3D, but humor works to sell these outlandish stories really well on the big screen. Thats why Guardians & Thor Ragnarok are so fun. Judge Dredd is rich in a different kind of humor that I think is really important to what those comics are. The facism is so intensely wrong & cleverly executed in some of those stories that I've often broke out in real fits of laughter while reading. Dredd is at his best & most heroic when he's a total dick to a world that was asking for it. I can't think of any other property where you can have your protagonist act like that & still be so likeable.

With the right actor Judge Cal could be hilarious on screen. It would also be a good opportunity to give us the strong Judge Anderson readers fell in love with. In Dredd 3D she's not unlikable but she doesn't have that spunky, tough personality from the comics at all.

Dredd was enjoyable to me.

I really liked the contrast between that terrifying atmosphere emanating from the menacing building with extremely violent criminals and the stoic attitude from Dredd, barely any emotion, always focused no matter the situation. I loved it and would pay to see a sequel in a heartbeat.

Don't know anything about the comics though, and what I remember from the Stallone movie is only the sexy Diane Lane...

In short: total rubbish. If you want a decent 'crazy cult' type film look at The Sect / La Setta. It is not a 'thriller' in any sense. All the cheesy little references were lazy and unnecessary I felt. It doesn't have an ounce of suspense, nor does it have much by way of narrative. It tries to be many things at the same time and it just doesn't work out. Honestly, it's really poor.

Somehow that wording compels me to write of my first viewing of Raising Cain just recently.
I had no inkling that this existed, as if it was buried as failure and we're not supposed to speak about it. Ever.
A few years back the gal had a watch on some night programming and told me the next day. In describing it, she seemed disturbed by it, not able to tell if it's the tale or the presentation. Following that, I found out it had De Palma in writing and directing. Back to present, we saw Lithgow in Dexter Season 4 and that reminded me. I watched the trailer online and knew immediately that I wanted to see it. So... Call me names but I had fun. One bit in a hospital room urged me to avert my eyes, just because the combined sounds and imagery were so beautiful brutal. I can imagine people turning it down when they see Lithgow overacting. But that's like realizing in the last reel of Carrie that... "Wait...she has powers?!". Duh. I find it delightfully grotesque.

Back to real talk.

And the Dredd script was leaked even earlier, I think. That's not what I was getting at, though.

Even if The Raid came out years after Dredd and liberally plagiarised it, The Raid still beats Dredd. Badly.
The Raid also enjoys higher critic and viewer scores, across the board.

When you have control of one of the most universal and iconic characters of all time, and you lose out an Indonesian action film with the same story, you've fucked up.

Also; looking at it from a financial angle;

The Raid; Indonesian action thriller
Budget: $1,100,000

Dredd; science-fiction action film, with global, iconic character
Budget:$35,000,000

Venom (2018) - Ruben Fleischer

The gossip went like this;
The, A Star Is Born (2018) - Bradley Cooper camp, worried about the looming shadow of another "Marvel" film, campaigned against it.
Accusing Marvel fanboys, of review bombing A Star Is Born, so as to curry sympathy, indignace and indeed plausible deniability (in case of poor returns) for their star vehicle.
This got the Marvel fans up in arms and a self-fulfilling accusation became flesh.

I think we might be able to get to the bottom of this, here.

SONY

I would put it to you, that it was in fact SONY, who devised and accrued all this free PR for its Venom
Not that I sympathise with Coopers indulgence.
I have not seen, nor do I have any intention of seeing, A Star Is Born (2018) with Cooper and that trash he is "starring" with but it seems to me, that SONY played them real good here.

To the "film";
The idea of a big name actor, playing a fully masked CGI character, has always seemed hilarious to me. Case in point; Tom Hardy, in Venom (2018).
Some actors must love this type of roll. All the cash, half the work!
I suspect that SONY offered him big money, hoping that his name would "elevate" this rubbish.

When Hardy himself is present, onscreen in Venom, he is unbefuckinglievably bad. Atrocious.
His "American" accent is ridiculous. His shuffling, muttering, head bobbing/lowering submissive ingratiation, is nauseating.
Come to think of it, maybe this is why Hardy loves hiding behind masks?!
And another thing  . . . what the fuck is Hardy doing with his legs?! He is not bending the knees, just throwing his legs out side to side as he "walks", like he has shat his pants!

Masks, bow-legged hobbling, what is up with hardy and all his gimpage?
Hardy's character also loses his girl, only to become besties with her new beau. Who, does this appeal to?!

The rest of the cast were equally and eminently punchable. TV actor, calibre.

Speaking of gimpage; the Social Justice signalling early in the film, is fuckery of major league proportions.

The dialogue; . . . . Jarringly moronic. I was not expecting poetry here but this is the work of a simpleton.

The "Action"; You can not see it. I repeat, you can not see it. Speed blur.
Pro tip for Ruben Fleischer; Hey, Fleischer, forget about filming anything in your action scenes. Just shake the shit out of your camera. End result would be the same visually, while saving you a fortune.

Music; I can't remember a note of it.

Venom (2018) is, by any measure, a very, very bad film.

A great thriller for your 14 year old's slumber party. :-/ John Cho, who can be accredited to popularizing the term MILF, plays a father who freaks the fuck out when his 16 year old daughter turns up missing. While not subtle in the least, the points showing how shitty social media, and most people that use it are, are about the only redeeming quality for me. I didn't exactly fight the GF on this pick, so partially my fault.

My point wasn't that The Raid Redemption was at all bad, I just enjoyed DREDD more because I like the sci-fi setting, the mutant stuff and I thought Ma-Ma was an interesting villain. Also, TRR's writer/director is Welsh, so calling it an "Indonesian action film" isn't really factual except for where the funding came from, not that I have enough experience watching action movies from Indonesia to have an idea what to expect, but I think studio involvement was much lighter than for DREDD, which is an uphill battle for many directors working in Hollywood. Much more bang for the buck shooting in Indonesia too, so budgets' schmudgets. They probably wanted it to be PG-13 even.

Also, DREDD has the baggage of once being linked to Stallone's "let's lose the helmet, and fast" version, which will turn some people off completely. I've tried getting friends to watch it only to have them go "that crappy Stallone movie?".

I trust that you do not feel the same way that your friends do, about the real Judge Dredd film, emphatic?

Bone Tomahawk (2015) Killer name, not quite suited to its film. Unhurried atmospheric Western/horror. Of the suicidal rescue mission subgenre, with broken-legged, gangrene-menaced cowboy Patrick Wilson's wife kidnapped by a bunch of fuckin CHUDs. Wilson's fellow Fargo season 2 star Zahn McClarnon even pops up early on, to let 'em know these motherless fucks ain't his kind of Injun! Cowboy, sheriff Old Kurt Russell, his even older deputy, and a right jammy cunt of a gunslinger form up like Voltron for honour-bound suicide rescue mission action.

Settled in with this expecting an indulgently grueling death ramble, wasn't disappointed. Undeniably overlong, the dirt-simple script and shoots accenting. I like my nightmare road movies on the draining side but yes, don't expect much pace. Do expect much on the mundane terrors of sleeping outdoors, and all sorts of other godawful frontier happenings! I love that stuff, holy cow was I liking the comfy couch and warm house I was watching these poor motherfuckers from. Delivers on its harrowing premise in bluntly horrific style, eventually. Superb performances from the starring quartet throughout. Decent slow burner.

nice review. recommend Zahler's other film, Brawl in Cell Block 99. same inundating bursts of violence, but it smaller doses.

Thanks, will give it a go! Decompressed with always reliable Tombstone immediately afterward and was already fondly recalling the ghastly trip. And Old Kurt.

I watched Bone Tomahawk some time ago, a shocking gore suspense movie set in a Western setting. Problem is, it seems the gore is there for the sake of it: we already know what the troglodyte tribe practices are, as mentioned by the town's native in the uniform, so yeah. :?
Kurt Russell is there to kick ass and put sense on the trigger happy idiots around him.

Crazy Rich Asians: ***

Pretty much exactly what it says on the label. Big flashy rom-com filmed in Singapore with an almost exclusively Asian cast, aimed squarely at that same demographic. A moderately successful University professor accompanies her boyfriend to Singapore for a wedding and finds out along the way that he is the likely heir to a large real estate fortune, leaving her to deal with his family that largely disapproves of him marrying a "commoner". Reasonably entertaining, but a lot of it feels like you would have to have lived within that culture to understand it.

Fantastic movie. Wasn't sure what to expect, but the one time they have a musical number is just to set up one of the main characters since she is a popular actress. A simple missing father case becomes way more complex as the Japanese army, Chinese gangsters and drugs start to interweave in this. Recommended for sure!

Liked the concept. Started off good. Quite intense. Third act did nothing for me. As far as non-indie alien movies these days go, it's not terrible. Just cocked up some of the dramatic elements, amongst other things. The world they created was quite impressive though.

Love, Simon
A gentle reminder that as long as you are really good looking, have great friends, really cool parents and live in suburbia, coming out is gonna be A-okay! I realize eras are different and I'm only speculating, but the couple of kids I went to high school that at some point came out most likely went through a personal hell compared to this.

Honestly, it's really poor.

this is a popular opinion of the film for sure. lol

it sounds like you were looking for it to be something it was never intended to be; it's an exploitation film, plain and simple. it wears its cheesy, lazy references like a badge of honor

mandy is a schlocky visceral laugh and never tries to be anything else; i thought it was hilarious

Project A (1983)

Forgot how wonky the production quality of a lot of these old HK movies are. A fun rump, but as with a lot of Jackie Chan's movies, if the fighting alone doesn't hold your attention it will be a long hour and 45 minutes.
