True. They are both fantastic. I have been disappointed by OPN though. I went to NY to see the Age Of performance live and it was one of the most aversively bad shows I've ever had to sit through in my whole life. I actually had trouble trusting my own ability to pick out stuff to listen to for awhile. But it didn't last too long, I shook it off.cj iwakura wrote:

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
A billionaire invites his friends, and famed detective Benoit Blanc, to a weekend on his private island in Greece. It goes without saying that someone dies.
Relatively weak (compared to the first Knives Out) as a murder mystery, but the simple plot is compensated by a noir side: some serious desperation and frustration among the good guys and thorough, uncomfortably plausible satire of horrible rich characters that are both caricatures and realistic.

Not sure if I mentioned this, but there was a good episode of Hats Off that does a location tour of the movie. If you ever wondered what spots were used to shoot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1x5bFx7wozwGaijinPunch wrote:Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

Well that was a fun rabbit hole -- never knew those old scenes made the light of day. Wonder if The Breakfast Club and the others will get a similar treatment.

The Menu 6/10
There's a lot I saw in The Menu that I can recognize as good, and there were some awesome moments, but I didn't really like it much. For starters (pun intended), it was just a little too on-the-nose the whole way through. If you've seen a preview or you read or heard anything about the movie before you saw it (anything at all), then you pretty much know what's going to happen the whole way through. This is not a movie that's terribly interested in shocking or tricking the audience.
The film functions as a critique of fine dining and, by extension, classism and capitalism. I'm not going to spell anything out because I don't want to spoil what little discovery there is to be made, but I also don't really need to because it's so heavy handed in it's message.
Ralph Fines is excellent in his twisted, evil glory; I'm increasingly unsure if he is acting or if Voldemort is his true self. Hilarious how he's the last major HP cast member to stand by Rowling. But I guess I'll never really understand boomers.
Anna Joy is good as she ever is, but I'm starting to get sick of her. She always just scowls at the camera and makes her dumb model poses where she stares intensely. I mean, I guess it's a bit but bits get old, unlike good acting. She does have a couple great scenes, but there isn't really anything that demands she be the one present; it's mostly the way the story is driven and the writing.
Last thing I'll mention is that the director is a TV guy, I think GOT and Succession or whatever, and this film definitely shares some of those throw-away vibes. Not terrible, but I did get bored more than once.

The Killing Of A Sacred Deer (2017) Psychological horror wankfest, in which Heart Surgeon Man must contend with the vengeful son of his late nemesis, Heart Patient Man. Dialogue across the board has a decidedly mechanistic, quasi-autistic affect; presumably meant to unnerve, but producing some of the best out-loud laughs I've had in a fairly trying month. Tentatively willing to give benefit of the doubt.
Nightmarish soundtrack is the film's saving grace, suffusing a thrumming dread from start to finish. Mitigates itself against outright art-house onanism well, with a finely concise-yet-surreal core thread of merciless, Old Testament-style retribution - or is it justice, or vengeance? Hmm! Please discuss. Not bad, though you'll need either a tolerance, or an affinity (hi!) for crippling Asperger's to withstand the dialogue.

It was the missus' turn to choose and she opted for The Good Nurse
It would've made an excellent TV movie is the best way I can describe the film's quality. I enjoyed it, despite some cliched flaws. Has some very good performances and is based on a frighteningly true story.

Ok so I watched Nemesis. 8/10
What do you say about a movie that's equal parts Robocop, Blade Runner and the Terminator? And it's got Brion James in it so I love it anyway.
I have a lot of fond memories watching movies with Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. Although I just went down a weird rabbit-hole where I found out he went all Russia-crazy and moved there. Apparently he found the whole Putin-riding-a-bear thing to be ultimately manly and just wanted to suck on the teat of it. Go figure.
Yuji Okumoto is awesome, but he has a pretty small role; it's about like what Brad Pitt gets in True Romance.
Anyway, that was my Pyun tribute.

Nemesis sounds Interesting, will check it out.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Nemesis has one of the coolest scenes in action ever: shooting a circle into the floor to go through more floors. It's fookin' brilliant.

The scene where Julian pops out his eyeball is fantastic. And the whole conversation between Alex and Jared through the PDA is amazing for 1992; there were just so many cool little touches in it.drauch wrote:Nemesis has one of the coolest scenes in action ever: shooting a circle into the floor to go through more floors. Indeed! The sequels, unfortunately, are not worth watching. Lots of re-used footage.

Mythbusters tested out the "shoot out the floor" part (based on the version shown in Underworld), it was pretty thoroughly busted.

went and saw guillermo del toro's pinocchio on 35mm a few weeks back, and it was my favorite version of the film. really pumped for it to release on netflix for a rewatch.
I want to see white noise on 35mm this weekend since I'm a big noah baumbach fan but I might just wait until it's also released on netflix. the trailer made it look interesting but reviews are a little mixed

Youtuber Big Joel did a fairly damning take on it. IIRC, he cites some major changes that distort the message of the story and remove stakes. Specifically that in the original, Pinocchio is seduced by fame and goes down a bad road, but in the remake he's kicked out of school because he's not a real person and he's basically forced to make do anyway he can. But the movie doesn't adjust the rest of the story to fit that in any way, it just continues to rag on Pinocchio for making bad choices (that he didn't make).Some-Mist wrote:went and saw guillermo del toro's pinocchio on 35mm a few weeks back, and it was my favorite version of the film. really pumped for it to release on netflix for a rewatch.
If you just watched it, you might enjoy the counterpoint. Whether or not you agree, I think he's a good film critic and has interesting takes.

The Fountain
Doing a roulette on one of the large movie discord servers and I got stuck with this. People are shocked I did not fully enjoy this. Hugh Jackman is a superb actor but the movie got dragged way down every single time they went to the modern love story section. I would gladly take a movie with just the future and past segments with the immortality over him being an annoying jerk trying to save his love and doing all sorts of unethical medical research things.

He's supposed to be acting like a jerk in his mourning. The conquistador and spaceman are reflections of his journey to acceptance, there would be no point to their characters without him.

I got to see The Menu with a buddy in yet another nearly empty theater.
I had a very good time. Honestly, vol.2's post largely corresponds with my experience, although on my personal rating scale, I'd give it a 7.

Spoiler
unless I missed something [which is possible -- we had projector issues at the start], I had a good laugh at what I think was the final joke of the movie -- we get a shot of the menu and given the events, and it's clear that the dinner patrons [other than the one guy who knew ahead of time what was coming] hadn't read it
the entire ending was really goofy and I'm still thinking about it, the cheeseburger bit was beautiful

What happened, Nina Simone?
Music documentary on the life and troubles of Nina Simone. I really enjoyed it. The music is good, the story nicely doesn't rush itself, and it is superbly edited imo. Although my wife, with her fancy film degree, thought it was fairly average.
