One of the two things I can recall from it, having seen it once circa 2002. Some Akira shenanigans going on! (the other was Birdie getting his ass handed to him by bioroid man)

edit: haha, I recalled the cyborg being a Jack (Tekken) knockoff, but refreshing my memory that's frickin Zankuro from Samurai Spirits.

Did any fighting game anime approach the original SFII animated movie? I guess I'd largely moved on from my 90s kid fighting game mania by the time 2000 rolled around, but I don't recall anything having its punishing fights or convincing settings. Everything's got a real weight to it... Claw getting kicked through that wall neatly encapsulates.

Red River (1948)
Epic story and great characters. Suffers a bit with late 40's tropes and dialogue, but it's still a very good Western. The live sceneries are wonderful, too.

SF2:TAM actually had real fighters (namely Kazuyoshi Ishii and Andy Hug) supervise the martial arts used by the characters, which is why everything except for the ki attacks are animated in such realistic matter. I don't think any other fighting game-based anime has ever went with such a approach, except maybe SF2V, which was a TV series made by the same staff, including Gisaburo Sugii as the showrunner.

The Fatal Fury motion picture is only other theatrical anime movie based on a fighting with the same level of production values as SF2:TAM, but it was a lot more flashier, with most of the fights consist of ki attacks.

Interesting, it definitely shows... even the superhuman stuff looks consistently painful/plausible. Ryu vs Fei Long is one of those things that's so good, I look it up every few years to ensure I'm not mis-remembering it! There's this wicked sense of velocity and gravity - the agile roll at eleven seconds and the brutal head smash at the end are equally intuitive-looking.

I think I watched an episode or two of V, it's been forever but I remember thinking the VHS boxart looked like the same personnel. Come to think of it, it was Fei Long on the cover too.

SF2V is basically "The Young Ryu & Ken Chronicles". It's an alright series, but it strays a bit too far from the SF2 canon and the final story arc is rushed since the show had its planned episode count reduced due to low ratings, which is why Balrog (Boxer) shows up in the series as a CIA desk jockey under Shadaloo's payroll despite the opening video and promotional art depicting him in boxing gear.

Airplane (1980)

Amazing. And as we talked about it several pages ago, needs no introduction. I'm sure a lot of people slagged this off at the time, but the comedy in it is fucking hilarious. Definitely exemplifies how rough around the edges the analogue era was. Tons of shit that wouldn't make the PG-13 cut today. As a kid, I didn't quite get scenes like this and most definitely not this one that just slips by almost unnoticed but I guess that's what makes it so enjoyable now.

Great flick. Some people don't dig slapstick and I get it but personally I enjoy these a lot. Just turn off your brain and laugh.

Freebie and the Bean (1974)

I'd originally watched this in VHS in the 90's. An 1080 MKV does it justice.

This film is fucking crazy. It has some of the best car chases and stunts I've seen, so many close calls. James Cann and Alan Arkin play a couple of cops and the film has been credited with inventing the cop buddy movie. It has a weird uneven tone, often funny, sometimes serious but it all works.

Caan and Arkin are both great as constantly bickering assholes, the plot is thin and doesn't really matter, but they basically have to keep some bigwig crime boss alive over a weekend and prevent multiple hits on him. Shot in San Fransisco in 73 and it looks great.

I read up on it afterwards and apparently Kubrick thought it was the best film of 1974. Weird.

I'm going through a Caan phase. Slither and The Gambler are next.

Cheers for that review. Will put that in the queue for sure.

Rupert Pupkin; remember the name!

The King of Comedy

Sober hilarity. Characters cut so sharply that it's up for every viewer using their own experience with people to determine in which category the ball lands. Geek or creep? It took me some time to get a grip on the De Niro character. Knowing other roles I kinda expected some volcanic eruption in grotesque violence. Did it happen? Kinda. He is so polite and so persistent that I would consider it violent. Laugh-out-loud stuff in there, once I decided that he's not a sad sap. The gal didn't have a fun time with it. I suppose in her experience those peeps accumulate to energy-suckers, some leeches. She admitted to "3 laughs", swore she would never see this movie again before it concluded, and finished it with the exclaim: "I thought it was supposed to be a comedy!" Wonderful! Rupert Pupkin, ladies and gentlemen!

Edit: typos

Then go for it. Maybe it's Scorsese's most ignored piece after the Christ picture. I have a pet theory I nurture. People instinctively shun the stuff in entertainment that holds an ugly truth. Easy enough to know why. You pay to get away from it. Not through it. Certainly I'm no exception, but when it's fun like this don't mind if I do. Let's see what you think, when you come around.

Been too many years to comment in-depth, but I loved The King of Comedy. Was recommended it with Pupkin as a sort of "American David Brent" (The Office UK), didn't disappoint. The semi-surreal bits in Pupkin's basement with his alleged "mother" stand out in memory.

God damn, just read up on Andy Hug. :o What a life, as tragically short as it was. I'm only passingly familiar with combat sports, but I knew of Peter Aerts from his demolition of Bob Sapp - his reportedly weeping at learning of Hug's death says a lot.

The Great Gatsby. This movie was weird. Seeing people in the 1920s dancing and singing along to the music of Jay-Z was jarring and surreal. I kinda enjoyed its frantic, hyper-stylized nature, but I can't fault anyone for hating the movie. Moulin Rouge I found to be incredibly irritating, but this Baz Luhrmann movie I liked. Leonardo DiCaprio was amazing.
There was a time, in the era of great chaos, when the Earth and the moon were at war with each other. A daredevil from the moon piloted a bizarre aircraft. It was feared, and because of its shape, called... Einhander.

I really like Thief, but then again I've got a thing for Tuesday Weld and love the Tangerine Dream soundtrack. In fact I'll watch it again as it's been a few years. It's one of Caan's favourites though he hates the music.

Cobra Verde (1987)
The last Herzog/Kinski collaboration. Kinski plays a late 19th century Brazilian bandit known as Cobra Verde (Green Snake), who ends up sent on a impossible mission to re-open the slave trade in West Africa (Brazil still had slavery at this point in time) by his employer to get rid of him.
Once again, the making of the movie is more interesting than the movie itself: There is a scene with fierce female warriors, a ton of them, who almost rioted and killed the film crew when one of them kicked them.
As usual, Kinski pissed off everybody, and even the cinematographer left due to constant verbal abuse, and according to Herzog, even physical.
Worth a watch, I guess. Fitzcarraldo was more interesting and a overly more ambitious project.

Ouch -- and it's basically the end of Tangerine Dream's run of amazing things.

Spoiler tag for those that haven't seen it:
Spoiler
Unless you're a Chicagoan, you may not know that The Green Mill which Caan blows up is quite famous (and still around). The Wikipedia entry is pretty short and to the point.

I've got an hour long doc called Cobra Verde: Location Africa and its basicallly unedited footage from the making of the film. Kinski is constantly preening himself and grumbling about everything. There's an awful part where he comes into a room full of half naked women and starts flirting with them and they all pull away in fear :D.

It's pretty interesting considering it was their last collaboration. I don't rate the film much though, maybe it's another one that will shine with a Blu-ray.

A Bullet for the General (1966)
Decent Spaghetti Western taking place during the Mexican Revolution. Kinski plays a deranged bandit priest in this one, but the action is mostly focused on Chuncho (revolutionary and bandit) and Nino, a mysterious American. Chuncho is the fucking best, does whatever he wants and to hell with the consequences.

Just watched all five Dirty Harry films in chronological order (was playing a bit of Lethal Enforcers and the obvious Harry rip-off parts put me in the mood to see them again, so ordered the box set on Blu-Ray). My opinion hasn’t changed, the best are certainly the first two films Dirty Harry and Magnum Force both have really interesting plots and antagonists - “Scorpio” from the first film is of course loosely based on the never caught Zodiac killer.

The last 3 films I could kind of take or leave, they all steadily decrease in quality of story and (over) acting - especially in the main baddie department. By the time we get to number five The Dead Pool things are a total joke and Clint did well to pack it in when he did.

Worth getting though just for the first two.

Has anyone seen the censored version of the SF2 anime? The part where Honda calls Dhalsim a "Bastard" is substituted for "Bonehead" and when Guile says "I'll rip you're filthy heart out you fucking bastard!" is also substituted for something warm and fluffy you might hear on a power rangers cartoon. Yet in all cuts of the film Chun-Li's tits are still acceptable

AYKSHUALLY, Image her PERFECT AZN TITS Image and NOT-INCONSIDERABLE ASS Image are substantially under-represented in at least one OG VHS release. The one I had! As detailed on the following page - I will foil any would-be Darwin award recipients' dreams by pointing out that it is TOTALLY NWS Image I always assumed the VHS was uncut, because holy fuck Beavis, it's a Chun Li shower scene MIRITE? I was just surprised it wasn't Ryu and Ken!

HOWEVER, the one I was watching on Youtube reinstates Ms. Li's lovingly contoured soapy goodies, BUT cuts out my favourite line from said hackjob! Always somethin' with that Fei Long. He's an asshole! Now he's a... troublemaker? Sprayed cheeto dust when I heard that. BRB, putting my fist through the monitor. Image

Speaking of AZN BOOTY:

One Cut Of The Dead (2017)

Finally got around to this after several recommendations ITT, a few pages back. Clever little movie, enjoyed.

Candyman (1992)
Interesting urban horror/slasher movie. The movie itself was decent, but all the good stuff was by Tony Todd who played Candyman: holy fuck, did this guy deliver his creepy lines in his creepy as shit voice.

Swans. Where Does a Body End? - Swans being one of THOSE pretty major inspirations of mine I have never "grown out of" so to speak, I felt obliged to attend a theatrical screening of this. Somehow, the folk who also came to see it seemed like visual arts kind of people to me, although I can't put my hands on why so. I for one was fairly glad to see Jarboe in such a good shape all around (she just looked like a happy person, I found). Some other observations were made, but I've no time to type it all right now.

P.S.
A word of their notoriety as "louder than Einstürzende" back in the day had stuck in my mind. Quite a benchmark that was, then. Sadly, I can't remember the name of a recently deceased guy who was infamous for "burning the speakers" on the gigs, or at least ceasing to present (not quite "perform" from what I gather) his music in case of soundmen imposing a volume limiter on him despite his blatant objection to that. Academically educated a composer, apparently, but quite the black sheep of that crowd.
