Hard to compare the two because Aliens is the best kind of sequel, one with a completely different theme. Alien 1 is a slasher mixed with eldritch horror that has more in common with John Carpenter's The Thing than Aliens. Aliens is a Vietnam War movie mixed with sci-fi that has more in common with Predator than Alien 1.

Also the cut is a huge part of the comparison. The cocoon scene in the special edition of Alien 1 just lifts the film to a whole 'nother realm of horror, why couldn't they have cut the "save the cat" scene from the theatrical release instead?

Aliens, on the other hand like most Cameron movies, the theatrical cut is VASTLY superior to the director's cut. One good scene with the auto turrets in exchange for multiple awful cringey scenes that suck the tension out of the film proper.

I think I'd have to give the edge to Alien 1 special edition, because even in the theatrical cut of Aliens, the whole "get away from her you bitch" wrestling scene sucked so much out of the core 'Nam theme and just felt like a tacked on thing to justify Ripley's presence in the film. In fact I think Aliens would have been even better off without Ripley and taken a more grunt-eye-view of being stuck in the shit with an incompetent commander and a slimy war-profiteer while trying to survive a lovecraftian horrorshow.

Holy fuck, that does sound good.

The other alteration I'd make is to the aliens themselves. No obvious "angry bee boss" model, and certainly no queen. Get O'Bannon and Giger to come up with something much stranger, encroaching all around the hapless grunts.

I was rewatching the Theatrical and Director's cuts recently. Ripley's "Then what's laying these eggs?" is met with uneasy silence in the former, notably from Hudson. In the latter cut, a lightbulb visibly goes off over Bill Paxton's head, and he says "OH YEAAA... THE MAMA" and even this frisson of eldritch is denied me. 3;

I like the sound of it, but I also think that there are many dynamics in the film which rely on Sigourney's acting. The relationship with the android comes to mind, and newt. If the film was nothing but a war film in space, it would still be worth watching, but I'm not sure that I would want to sacrifice all the good things she added to the mix just to be free from the cringy climactic moments.

As Bil pointed out, it's really the Big Bad Mama Alien that's the problem. She's both a waste of energy and a waste of money. I wonder how many cool explosions and smaller aliens they could have made for the one big boss. But I guess that's what Cameron was all about though, wasn't it? Making a big splash with a specific big effect.

Maybe if Ripley gets killed off towards the end and one of the grunts saves the day and rescues newt?

L'Avventura

9/10

Must see cinema. They don't make movies like this anymore.

Also, BIL, I got a friend of mine to watch Harakiri and he loved it.

MM, I tend to agree with the cuts being very important. Cameron is a bit of a hack, if we are being honest.

Excellent to hear! The credit goes to Mischief Maker on that one, I very rarely ventured beyond Kurosawa and/or Mifune at the time. Nakadai is a treasure.

So I Married an Axe Murderer: **1/2

Mike Myers plays a paranoid San Francisco hipster who meets and falls in love with the owner of a butcher shop, but starts to suspect that she is "Mrs. X", an unknown woman who (according to a tabloid article) murdered three husbands on their honeymoon night and then disappeared. Pretty standard early 90s rom-com, aside from the axe murdering parts. Inexplicably, Mike Myers also plays his character's obnoxious Scottish father, using basically the same voice that would later be used for Fat Bastard in the Austin Powers movies and later Shrek.

Rewatched "Identity" with John Cusack and Ray Liotta.

This is my 11/10 when it comes to Hollywood productions. On rewatches I lol at some of the shouting that goes on mid way through the movie "if he moves i'm gonna shoot him, if someone comes through that door I'm gonna shoot them, if anyone tries to leave i'm gonna shoot them". I could watch this movie again and again because it just oozes that quality I rarely find in movies. The movie has a twist and its a good one.

So again 11/10.

New Groove - Disney cartoon movie.

I can't remember Disney doing animation for at least since the "Princess and the frog". I don't know why Disney bothered with this one, it doesn't stray too far from the usual formula, has limited laughs, the cast from what I can see has John Goodman and thats it. It just doesn't really hold anything that makes you want to remember any of it.

6/10.

I'm such a dick for posting this.

"Adaptation" came out in 2002. "Identity" came out the following year.

The Emperor's New Groove seems to be something of a cult classic, mostly because it's much closer to Looney Tunes and other similar cartoon shorts in style than it is to other Disney films. It had originally been planned as a more ambitious and serious Disney film with a similar plot but that was just too ambitious for the executives after the disappointing box office performances of Pocahontas and Hunchback of Notre Dame, so we got a greatly scaled down and much more cartoonish film instead.

Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, 2006.

It's hard for me to rate this movie because I can tell it was so clearly made for an audience that doesn't include me. I can honestly say that I didn't laugh or even chuckle one during the whole thing. I enjoyed a few minor details; I thought Ben Stiller's role was great, although it was amusing rather than laugh-out-loud. And above all else, I thought it was an excellently cut movie. The editing is near-perfect and the choreography was excellent. Also, I appreciated the musical skill that was on display, even if I didn't enjoy it.

Regardless, the movie falls super flat to me. It was a comedy I didn't find funny; what is left of the movie is a shallow shell of a narrative let down by overblown clichés that try too hard to match up with classic John Cusack films and fail hard.

Perhaps someone who didn't grow up watching Brat Pack films would find some of these clichés so novel that they can actually carry the film, and perhaps those same people think Jack Black is super funny and just the best thing ever; or something else that totally evades me.

Pick of Destiny is like one of those SNL movies based on a popular recurring sketch. If you weren't already into Tenacious D, there's nothing really there for you.

I think it starts strong and ends strong, but that songless middle gets pretty blah.

They should have done the entire movie as a Rock Opera.

Aha. I get it. Thanks.

I don't know if you follow me, but I think it's like the Cowboy Bebop movie. It's only interesting as a novelty for fans of the TV show. It seems that Tenacious D shines much brighter in small dosages. Makes sense now.

WW84

1/10.

The first 15 minutes pays tribute to Wonder Womans past. As is the kind of DC/Marvel thing you see from time to time.. Go back to the past and see something you didn't see in the first one so you can revisit lots of characters that otherwise wouldn't be in the sequel. First 15 was quite exciting.

The next 1hr 45 mins though, fuck me its sooooooo boring. Not only is it boring but somewhat confusing, the soundtrack doesn't go with the movie, the edits and cuts are atrocious, the villian is laughably bad and his agenda is non sensical. Some of the stunts are really bad, the costumes are over done. I made 3 drinks and went back for nibbles a few times and didn't really care if missed anything. Its that bad.

Everything outside of the trailer is just nattering, going for walks, having lunch and the bad guy doing maniacal laughing. Whoever signed off on this script needs shooting. I would never in a million years sign off on this script. Its so bad just following the plotline no matter what the actors did it wasn't going to save this.

Citizen Kane
Somehow one of the last people on Earth to have seen this. Hearing Mank on the airwaves I figured it was finally time. Not sure I can add anything that hasn't be said over the last 80 years, but the standout feature is the lighting... so often the character at the center of attention is in a pitch black shadow in the middle of the screen. Cool shit!

Karamiai / The Inheritance
As the Japanese title insinuates, a group of schemes come together when a terminally ill business man is looking for his illegitimate heirs to decide if they are worthy of a piece of his inheritance. Directed by Masaki Kobyaashi of Harakiri, Ningen no Jouken, and Kwaidan fame, this one is a much lighter affair than any of the aforementioned (night and day to Ningen no Jouken) but still quite a show. A lot of familiar faces from those works appear, including Nakadai Tatsuya, but only in a supporting role. Looking at early 60's Tokyo in wide screen is a delight.

Brazil (1985) - far from my first time watching it, but gawd, does it ever grow all the more important for all of us all the time, ever since way back when. Silly gorgeous Kim Greist in this one.
It's worth noting the neo-expressionist, hard-lit style of it. (Blatantly soft-lit scenes are, well, blatantly motherly ones.) There's this, and there's The Hunger (1983), in terms of neo-expressionism in the movies.

The Whip And The Body (1963, dir. Mario Bava, under SECRET NAME "John M. Old") Oh heck no! Disgraced nobleman KURT has returned to the castle, to harass his ailing father and younger brother for he PATRIMONY! And ALSO to bang his one-time fiancee, who has since become engaged to kid bro! What a rascal! Then someone bumps off the unliked rogue, and ghostly shit begins to occur - in the castle! But what is really going on?

Image

Ghostly Gothic melodrama/whodunit, watchable on style if not substance. Gorgeously staged and shot on location in Castel Sant'Angelo, with classically beautiful leads in Christopher Lee and Daliah Lavi. Endearingly preposterous script, even pardoning the English overdub. You are not my son Kurt you are a serpent you like to make people suffer!

Image

Some credibly creepy sequences and imagery, gifted a swaggering evil from peak performance Mr. Lee. Made waves in its day for sadomaso content, and tbh that one bit where Daliah gets off massively was pretty fuckin hawt, but don't expect anything XTREEM (you SICK FUCKS  Image). Not a bad watch if you want something broody and GOFFIC, especially as is be on Youtoob - FO FREE Image

I concur! I still need to watch Cockfighter! Just found out it was a book last year, so I'd like to read it as well. I've owned that DVD since the early 2000s and just never got around to it. I'm gonna try to rectify that this week now that I'm announcing it in stone.

I'd hate to make you postpone your watching of that perfect piece of non-empathetic cinema, but Oates totally owns that role and it would be hard not to see his face when reading that book. Just thought I'd let you know.

Real Steel 2011

I was out of the country when this film was released, and I had zero awareness of it and didn't know what to expect. It turned out to be a kid's movie, but I enjoyed it anyway. It wasn't the best action movie, and it wasn't the best drama. The female lead (who I recognized from the TV show Lost) was adequate, and the kid was also just okay, but Hugh Jackman and Anthony Mackie both turned in above average performances, and the robot special effects and battles were fun to watch and really brought out the kid in me that loves big robots fighting each other. If I have one complaint it's that the Japanese robot didn't get more screen time. I thought that thing was super cool.

Keeping in mind it's a kid's movie, which I don't tend to watch much anymore, I give it a 3 out of 5.

Hardcore Henry (2015) Ignored this at release, assuming it was CallaDoodie XVII: MuricaForce vs AlQaedaMan - The Movie. Significantly more fun than that. Gleefully black-humoured FPV rollercoaster, at times feverishly creative. Appropriately light on plot, capably emceed by a chipper Sharlto Copley. As far as bubblegum action movies go, it's not a bad afternoon's diversion at all.

Absolutely loved this scene. DECO miniboss energy. (mild early-film spoilers)
