Re: Movies you've just watched
Speaking of Carpenter, my sis's fiance and I went to the Music Box to see The Fog last night. The 4K restoration was so beautiful. the 70mm films all had various degrees of scratchiness to them, but the HD Fog made the movie look fresh and clean.
It was my first time seeing The Fog. I don't rank it as highly as I would Escape from New York or The Thing, but there was plenty to enjoy. Like Adrienne Barbeau. And those wicked, glowing red eyes the ghosts have. I enjoyed how Carpenter was able to make what was essentially a cadre of fog machines feel like an apocalyptic threat. I think I would have liked a higher body count but the mystery angle of why the town was founded and why the ghosts attacked was moody and suspenseful. Per usual Carpenter, it's more atmospheric than scary, though the jump-scare chords were so loud that I'd be spooked each time.
Amazingly I discovered that the same theater is going to show Orson Welles' The Other Side of the Wind next week! I don't know if they have a special reel or disc of it... or if they are going to stream Netflix into the theater (lol). Either way, I've bought my ticket. Pure excitement, that's what I'm feeling.

Nice to hear that lovely cast again. It's got the Hook spirit, I think. Worth a watch.

The Assassin (2015) - Hsiao-Hsien Hou
The first Hsiao-Hsien Hou film that I have seen.
Difficult to "review".
If your are interested in the technical side of film making, it may be of interest.
It's a pretty demanding watch, though. If the visuals (which in some places, really are quite incredible) do not engage, then this may not "entertain".
I spent a good portion of the film trying to discern any use of artificial Light. I could not.
Story; an assassin returns home on business . . .
I could make out the basic structure of the plot but past that, I was lost.
Qi Shu - as the assassin, is very easy on the eyes and Chen Chang has lots of presence but the standout , for me was, Dahong Ni,
who really seemed to get the spirit of the film and achieved maximum pathos with minimum "acting".
Recommended; with the proviso that you know what you are getting yourself into.

Atomic Blonde
Some quite formidable action sequences. Better than I expected, and quite violent. Story a bit... well somewhat typical spy shit I found. The soundtrack is made for generation X'ers which isn't a bad thing but I feel it's a cash in most of the time these days.

Ant Man and the Wasp:***1/2
The palate cleanser following Marvel's darkest film yet in Infinity War. Not bad for a "light" Marvel movie, where everyone mostly chases around a shrinking building, and in the end basically nothing of any consequence happens, but it still reasonably entertaining mostly due to the side characters (the "truth serum" parts were pretty funny.) Probably won't make much sense to anyone who hasn't seen Civil War or the first Ant Man, but I'm guessing most of the films audience will have seen at least one of them. I suspect the only part of the movie that will have any implications in the wider MCU is the first post-credit scene.

If they would have edited it down about 25 minutes that would have helped. Loved the inclusion of Stalker in the cinema, and the stand off behind the screen. That seems to be chronologically unsound though.emphatic wrote:The last 30 minutes really changed my review from "pure shit" to "near hit".GaijinPunch wrote:Atomic Blonde

Smokey and the Bandit
Can't remember if I saw this one in the theater but I recall my mom not being a fan of me seeing it b/c of the language. Note though, I was quite young. Very simple plot... lots of drawls... a few laughs. Pretty stupid, but then again, so were we in the lates 70's. A pretty decent romp but mainly has nostalgia (and Burt's stache + bell bottoms) going for it.

I didn't figure out until much later how much language they had to edit out for the made-for-TV version of this one. This one used to play on TBS all the time, which is where I watched it.GaijinPunch wrote:Smokey and the Bandit

I saw they were showing a 70mm print of The Thing last month. I think it was a 35mm print blown up to 70 but still would’ve been cool to see.EmperorIng wrote:Speaking of Carpenter, my sis's fiance and I went to the Music Box to see The Fog last night. Unfortunately the Music Box management relies on too heavily on formatting and overlooks major flaws -- regularly. This 70mm print has aged a shitload (see a few pages back in this thread). Did it kill the experience? No way, but I'd have rather watched a 35mm print w/o color shifts any day.Cannonballs wrote: I saw they were showing a 70mm print of The Thing last month. Yes, this was the 70mm festival, but I don't think anyone there really gave a shit. I try to stay abreast of old films showing at the theaters and this was my first chance to see The Thing at a proper venue. I'd have gone if it was digital.
Usually I'd give them the pass on doing it once, but they had listed Akira as Japanese, and I showed up and found it in the fucking Streamline dub as it started (at midnight no less). Walked out, and took my gf and friend in tow w/ me, as that was not the experience I sold. Talked to the management via email, and they gave me free tickets and were very cool about the whole thing, but said that they couldn't find it subtitled in 35mm so opted for the dub. Okay... two nights in a row? Sure enough, they're showing it at the end of November Friday and Saturday at midnight... dubbed.
Of course, if it's the only option, digital seems to be okay, and they are even the first to showcase old ass films getting new restores (Stalker, Solaris, etc.).
On a good note, I see they're playing Die Hard again for Xmas!

The Prince of Egypt (1998)
Wow, one of the best animated movies I ever saw. Amazing animation and score, great musical numbers, and quite a surprising cast too. (Val Kilmer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Goldblum, and on and on...)
Shame I didn't watch it back then, but at 13 I had other things in mind.

Their 4K showing of the Fog was nothing short of gorgeous. When I saw that dubbed Akira listing, I thought of your struggle last time. I thought about going since I never have seen Akira, but maybe I'll just hold out for picking up a good blu ray or something.GaijinPunch wrote:Unfortunately the Music Box management relies on too heavily on formatting and overlooks major flaws -- regularly. Speaking of The Fog/The Thing, can anyone recommend (or not) In the Mouth of Madness? It's on my radar.

I'm sure -- they even advertise stuff as 4k restore! 2k restore! all the time too. Irksome.EmperorIng wrote: Their 4K showing of the Fog was nothing short of gorgeous.
Please do not even bother with either dub. They are both atrocious and in no way capture the intensity of the original film... big screen or not. And if you see the Streamline dub at Music Box, it will be filled w/ hipsters laughing at all the cheesy lines. As the complete nerd who has seen it multiple times in the cinema in Japan, sans subtitles, I can assure you the movie gets like 2 chuckles at best all the way through. You are going to miss a handful of things w/o any Japanese under your belt but it's still the way to go. Blu Ray... big sound system... nobody else there... watch it all the way through. Great one in the Chicago winter. When I saw that dubbed Akira listing, I thought of your struggle last time. That being said, there is something to be said about the immersion of seeing it on the big screen. A lot of it was me being mesmerized by it representing a Tokyo/Japan I never knew (late 80's Japan, not 2019 Neo Tokyo), despite the fact that I called it home for so long. The movie did not break even at the box office but, believe it or not, it was about more than just the money. So much creativity... so much opportunity... who'd have known that it was all about to end.
Watched it on the laptop a few years ago. I recall it being definitely not bad. I don't think it will hold up to either of the other two but worth a shot.Speaking of The Fog/The Thing, can anyone recommend (or not) In the Mouth of Madness? It's on my radar.

I think it’s the last good movie he made. For sure worth checking out and scream factory just put out a new transfer on a blu with a bunch of new extras. Evil Dead 2 - Enjoyed this quite a bit. Poor Ash ended up fighting his own hand. The ending was hilarious, as well.
Army of Darkness - Despite the sillier tone (or maybe because of it), I enjoyed this one quite a bit. Ash gets some great lines in this one too (this is my boomstick!). I watched the DC with the alternate "bad" ending (which was hilarious), but I plan to watch the theatrical, as well (which I heard isn't as good overall, but has some nice scenes that aren't in the DC).
Nosferatu (silent) - Nice take on Dracula. Delightfully spooky with a creepy take on Dracula (Count Orlock) and some dark humor in spots.

Interesting. I watched this recently, only b/c his reviews of each Twin Peaks the Return episode were excellent, as well as some of his other TP theory videos. KILL EVERYONE!!, the movie.
Worth a watch, I guess, if only to see Klaus Kinski doing his usual crazy shit.

Jeremiah Johnson (1972)
Great mountain man story with Robert Redford.

Bohemian Rhapsody
Rami Malek will be nominated for best actor. I doubt he'll win it, but who knows. He is of course the best thing going for the film, with the costumes in a very close 2nd. I enjoyed the film, but as someone who has not followed Queen, but has enjoyed the hits (mostly in older age and not when they came out) and always respected Mercury's amazing voice, I could tell some liberties were taken as things have to fit into a movie. There's some harsh criticisms out there now, seemingly from the gay community. I guess that's all fair game. The film is also PG-13 which puts limits on how far down the downward spiral one can go (even with unlimited run time). Looking back now, I believe The Doors has gone down in history as a successful biopic (remember when Stone made good films?) but of course, many liberties taken. The Live Aid recreation was amazing.

Quite enjoyable. Although falling into the camp of awkward in high school, this being set in 2002 represents the beginning of the era I started to not relate to, having expatriated 4 years prior. I guess this is technically a drama but definitely has some laughs, too.
