Boyz n The Hood (1991)
Loved the rawness of it. A great cast here, too. One of my favourites now, for sure.

Meant to say, CRAZY HORSE's was ill stuff. First time (UNDER HEAVY FIRE), I was genuinely surprised - second time ("THIS IS ARMAGEDDON, THE PLACE IN MY DREAM") they're like "WTF is that?" and I was going "AWW SHIIIT"
Man, after this, I was wishing Wild Guns Reloaded's "dark" stage had been a blinding blizzard instead.
Spoiler

Don't forget Friday to see the other side of 90's LA. I believe the theatrical cut is actually what you want, not director's cut.soprano1 wrote:Boyz n The Hood (1991)

The Nest
In a creepy country mansion, a boy in a wheelchair is raised by creepy people led by his widow mother. They claim that outside their large estate the world is dangerous, they clearly conspire to keep the boy confined, and they behave in harsh and cruel ways. A pretty girl, a poor relative, arrives from outside and the protagonist falls in love with her, causing the whole card castle to collapse dramatically.
At the end, the multiple clever hints that there's something seriously wrong (apart from deranged adult characters, that is) resolve elegantly in a brief and satisfactory explanation.
Psychologically horrible situations are matched by a relatively high body count (suicide, car "accident", mysterious wounds, shotgun, revolver, captive bolt pistol: an unusual presence of firearms for Italian standards). Given where the plot clearly leads, the introspective moments about the boy falling in love are a setup for further suffering rather than a relief from tense revelations and showdowns.
Without significant supernatural or fantastic elements and without scary action scenes (even most violence occurs offscreen), it turns out to be a horror movie about horror: "normal" people driven mad by an extreme situation vs. an innocent realizing a number of unpleasant facts of life.

Preferred New Jack City to those other 90's classics.
The latest Godzilla has some cool effects but its just a 4k demo disc for me. I noticed the walking on water bit straight away which really turns me when film writers put stupid crap like that in a movie.
This year has been pretty rubbish for movies. Just drivel upon drivel.
Can't wait for the next Star Wars movie in a Galaxy far far away in Oxfordshire. The next Fast and Furious where a car will jump a rainbow, blow up a city and the last scene is everyone drinking alcoholic drinks on the beach like they achieved something. Who are these movies aimed at? People who have no sense of disbelief?

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

A surprising neo-noir with a gut wrenching ending. I wonder if Patrick ever regrets his decision...

Critters - 5?
Was pretty disappointing. Starts off well with a quick pace and shitty SFX, but then is mostly boring with nothing much happening in the first half hour. Critters turn up, look cool, but there are just too many actors holding a puppet to their chest and screaming-moments. No gore at all. Tries to be funny sometimes, but fails. Meh. Dumb ending.

Once upon a time in Hollywood.
Loved it. I'm not a huge Tarantino fan, but this and The Hatefull Eight are doing it for me.
It's a bit of a messy film and there are certainly some parts that maybe dragged slightly, but compared to what on at the old ciné these days it's a masterpiece. Great photography, the colours looked fantastic. The production design was spot on. At the start I thought the editing was a bit choppy and it took around 15 minutes for things to settle down. I want to watch it again, but fuck going to the cinema. It's not the way to watch films anymore, inhaling all that butt air... I'll wait for Netflix.

I was thinking during the crane shot of Dalton meeting Sharon Tate that it would pull back and we would see another gang creeping into Tate's house. Glad it didn't end on a bummer for once.

Hotel Rwanda (2004)
Don Cheadle plays Paul Rusesabagina, who harbored and protected refugees in the hotel he managed, during the beginning of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
I think the scene in the hotel bar with Colonel Oliver sums the West's view on the conflict, when he says tearfully that to them Paul is "not even a n*****. You are an African".
I haven't seen the Ray Charles movie, but Don deserved the Oscar, I think.
Godzilla King of Monsters (2019)
The CG wasn't too bad, the fights were good and entertaining, and the use of the old themes in the score was cool. The rest was a fucking joke.

The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019) - Wholesome movie about a race car driver who raises a Golden Retriever. Despite the poster and trailer, there's barely any racing in it and the movie is mostly just a family drama about a widowed father fighting for the custody of his daughter from her maternal grandparents with the dog acting as a narrator (voiced by Kevin Bacon). You can tell the Grandpa is going to be the antagonist, since he's a complete snob and doesn't get along with the dog. Kinda predictable and sappy like most dog movies, but a mostly inoffensive.
Hostage X (2018) - An amnesiac is held captive somewhere in Euroslavia as he steals the cell phone of the one thugs guarding him and tries to convince a CIA agent on the phone to send someone to rescue him. Stefanie Joosten (the girl who played Quiet in MGSV) is in it,but just barely. She's pretty much playing her character from MGSV except she's wearing clothes and doesn't have any cool superpowers. Its pretty obvious her scenes were shot after the fact, since she barely interacts with the main cast until the end and most of her scenes basically consists of her running around with a gun and posing with it (I think they even reuse a couple of shots to pad out the runtime)
I've also rewatched the two Tim Burton's Batman movies and I'm just reminded me about how cheesy they actually were. I'm guessing they seemed cool at the time when the only other live-action incarnation of Batman was the Adam West TV show, but it's almost hard to believe that Batman TAS (which still holds up to this day) was originally a tie-in to those movies.

60s Batman wasn't the first live action Batman. There were two live action movie serials in the 1940s. I have been watching TAS on Blu-ray. Good stuff.Jonny2x4 wrote: I've also rewatched the two Tim Burton's Batman movies and I'm just reminded me about how cheesy they actually were. I already knew about those the B&W serials, but I figured they were probably too obscure and didn't bring them up (should've figured someone here would pull an "Actually"). Never watched them though, but I've seen the DVD for them on sale a few times back when they were releasing a bunch of Batman stuff on home media.

The Third Murder [Sandome no Satsujin] (2017)
A human drama by the lauded Kore-eda using Japan's largest farce as the vehicle: the judicial system. Not his best. Not his worst. I watched it on the treadmill. Not as strong as the preceding After the Storm, but better than Our Little Sister which I thought was the worst of the four of his I've seen by a fairly large margin. (I've yet to see Shoplifters). I have a lot of bias on this subject, and ultimately I'm probably not in the target audience, but there's very little look at the judicial system here. There's a handful of pieces that will make you see the differences in Japan's system versus an updated one, but ultimately I feel they could have hit a bit harder, and been utilized better. (eg, coerced confessions... but I guess them not being made a big deal of is pretty typical in Japan as they are so institutionalized). Worth noting, while I've only got second hand knowledge, a lot of the goings on in this show were not as harsh as they would be in real life. Worth watching once. It's currently available on Amazon Prime.

Re: Movies you've just watched
My sister and 13-year-old nephew visited recently. My nephew mentioned being into Godzilla films so I sat him down to watch the original Japanese cut of Gojira.
I had forgotten how much of a slow burn the film can be, and he was squirming in his seat.
But I was proud of the little guy when my sister wandered in at the ending and she said, "Aww, they're going to kill Godzilla? That's sad!" and he immediately corrected her, "No mom! In this movie Godzilla's a malevolent force!"

Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Re: Movies you've just watched
I made my younger brother watch Star Wars through machete order (starting from Rogue One, did finish TPM, haven't watch the rest), so far he liked it. Pretty sure I did hear him humming imperial march theme before he went to school!
His thought of first three movies is good, I think his reaction of TPM kindof mixed. He was interested by Darth Sidious most of the time.

I am not very up on hip happenin' internet things, so this may be old news, but I was enjoying this STUNTMEN (stuntman?) REACT series, and thought this bit was kinda clever! Area Man films wild and crazy bank vault stunt for some Fast/Furious movie.
Some real ingenuity. Actually makes the scene kinda hilarious when you know how they managed it, which is a plus for me! Absolute mad angle-grinding fucker!
EDIT: holy fuck check this out xxx1993, that is fucking mortal If you die in 1926 - you die IRL! Pretty good stuff, this.

Also I found Ghost Protocol surprisingly likeable. Slept on Rogue Nation but I'll catch up. Ghost Protocol had been out for years before I saw it too. I'm always like that. I never made it down to the cinema for Fallout, either!
