Cargo (2017) - Ben Howling + Yolanda Ramke

Howling and Yolanda's, feature length treatment, of their 2013 hit short of the same name. Same 7 minute short, plus 98 minutes of padding.
How this script got the nod, is a mystery. Also; Martin Freeman in the lead? He is a limited, tv calibre actor but he is surely above this type of nonsense?

Now, for the mind melting nature of the "padding".
The short was incredibly simple in its premise; An infected and dying father tries to secure safety for his infant daughter, in a zombie apocalypse.
He is so committed to this, that he even finds a way to use his own death as a means to ensure a future for his child.
Note; The short has absolutely zero hint of anything political. The film? Oh, boy!

The extra 98 minutes of padding, is your brain on Social Justice;
  • Incidental Aboriginal Australian war parties saving humanity (I swear ta Gawd, I'm not making this up!) and led by, wait for it, war-painted Aboriginal female warrior? Check!

All "White Men", as slavers, kidnappers, rapists, weaklings, morons and farcically ineffectual protectors of their own families? Check!
(In fairness though, whitey gets the sexual equality treatment in genocide. All "White Women"in the film, fare no better than their men, as all are either diseased and dying or killed by their menfolk.
    In other words; REDUNDANT.)

Aboriginal peoples, as only hope for survival of the dying White race? Check!
There is also a cameo by Angela Merkel, as "the transplanter". (ok, I made that part up)

Probably sounds more like a political rant, than a film review at this stage. My apologies, chaps.
Just you try sitting through the fucker. Awful.

Smokey and the Bandit:
Fun, fun, fun. Classic Burt Reynolds. Hilarious movie. Sally Field, Jerry Reed, Jackie Gleason, and Paul Williams were great in it too.

Yankee Doodle Dandy:
A hoot! Excellent musical. James Cagney's dancing is a sight to see. His singing isn't bad either.

I'm really picky when it comes to musicals, but James Cagney you said? I'll be on the hunt for it.

The Offence (1973) - Sidney Lumet - re-watch

First off; If you have not seen this film, read nothing about it and go in blind.

This film does not mellow with age. If anything, I find it even more visceral today than when I first saw it, many years ago.
Perhaps Sean Connery's finest performance? Without a doubt his bravest.
Fantastic cast. Special note must be made of Ian Bannen's performance.

Outside of the Theatre, I doubt we will see the likes of this ever again.

Magnificent.

Sleepless in Seattle: ***

In contrast to how badly Paycheck butchered its depiction of Seattle, Here's the one that's most likely the definitive depiction of Seattle in a movie. That said, when you think about it a lot of people in this film act really creepy (especially the kid) and Tom Hanks has a couple of good meltdowns. The rare Rom-Com film where you can pinpoint the exact moment when all the man cards on the set were revoked.

Tom Hanks yelling is *always* funny. ALWAYS. I honestly don't comprehend how he and his wife can have a heated argument as I can't imagine her holding a straight face once he starts raising his voice.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) - "Director" Ron Howard?!

Hmm, interesting.
The opening, with its lacklustre score and frenetic action, did not bode well.
Some of the creatures were "off"; the hunting "dogs" and the very Legend (1985) - Meg Mucklebones - Lady Proxima.
(Lady Proxima, also being perhaps the start of the very poor and "un-Star Wars-like" names, in the film. Something that is very noticeable post Lucas, I find)

The swashbuckling began too grow on me, however.

Something that I thought to be a smart move, was the subdued lighting. The film is dark.
This made it much easier for ones imagination to fill in the gaps and more importantly, did not over expose the Han Solo of our childhood to the glaring, visual scrutiny of "the now".

Chewbacca was very well and respectfully handled, I thought (as opposed to Disney's sequel trilogy).

The film ultimately ended up being a chain explosion of manic action scenes. Said nothing and went nowhere.
The ridiculous insertion of
Spoiler
Darth Maul
near the end, marked it as the fan-fic Sarlacc pit, it could never really climb out of.
The visual monochrome, the nondescript score, the unremarkable Alden Ehrenreich as Han, all give the sense of noncommittal reverie.

And now, a special word about the lovely "ladies" of this episode of Disney-Star Wars;
If this is not your cup of tea, TL;DR.
Basically;
Image

Thandie Newton's - Val, in any other film, might have not been an issue but here, in Disney-Star Wars, her tough as nails, smartest of the bunch, noble heroine role . . .
well, it raised an eyebrow.

Then we have one of the "main" characters; Emilia Clarke's - Qi'ra. (a more "bling" spelling of Kiera, from the Irish - Ciara, I guess . . . hold on, is she giving me resting bitch face?!)

Image

There is some convoluted, unspoken backstory about this abandoned girlfriend's unfeasible rise within the murderous Crimson Dawn crime syndicate (there's another unimaginative
and incongruous name). There are suggestions of "shame" but perhaps that is best left alone.
Speaking of cock . . . Qu'ra's introductory description of Lando to Han, even has a dick joke.
Nu-Star Wars - "empowering" women!

And speaking of our favourite space-pimp; seems no hole is off limits! Lando, you dog!

Which brings us to Phoebe Waller-Bridge's - L3-37 . . . . An emancipated and highly militant droid-suffragette. As for "her". . . (SELF-CENSORED - for fear of being tazed)

In a Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) - "Blaster reveal" - moment, we see the dreaded bounty hunter Enfys Nest,
(again with the shitty names? I thought this one highly suggestive. Perhaps it was a clue?) at a climatic scene, remove the helmet and reveal . . . . this?!!
Spoiler

Stone cold Killa!

I cant help but wonder what the Phil Lord and Christopher Miller film, might have been.
For some reason, watching the finish product, I get the impression Lord and Miller might have spent some time trolling Jonathan Kasdan, before they were both rudely given the Bum's Rush

Pretty sure I will enjoy Zen's breakdown of Solo more than the film if I ever watch it. Maybe at some point. My main issues are that
1) for life of me, from every picture or trailer I saw, I could not see Han Solo anywhere in it.
2) while I do like Woody, Emilia Clarke is probably my least favorite Game of Thrones character now that she has stopped showing her tits. One trick pony.

Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942)
WWII America war propaganda aside (which is understandable for the year this was released), a funny and merry movie with one of the greatest actors I ever saw.

The Thing - 70mm

Just figured I should sound off about the experience. I've actually not heard of this fucker being played (any format) in any city I've lived in ever. So, I jumped at the chance. For anyone going for Saturday, keep in mind that it was fucking packed tonight. Almost sold out. I also got the time wrong so we got there like 20 minutes into it and pissed off the guy at the end of the row. Still, got a seat and enjoyed it. The film stock has really fucking aged. Definitely not well kept... at least not for preservation. Not a ton of dust, shockingly, but the entire film has a color shift to red. (Some of my old man's cheap as E6 film did this, but not all of it). It was borderline monochrome to be honest. But, whatever... I felt everyone there had seen it before.

As with other films that fill that theater up, some things that would never get a chuckle at a home viewing garner a room full of laughter. Some warranted, some not. Overall it was a good experience. Glad to see so many people taking an interest in it - many quite a bit younger than I.

You are very close to figuring out the whole shebang right there, GP.

Lets just say that the question of "who is Han Solo", comes with a twist in this film.

Which perhaps explains Harrelson's oddly named character, simply called, "Beckett".
Maybe the film should have been named; "Waiting For Solo"

Lol. Beckett... I mean, do they plan on giving him his own prime time drama on ABC where he's a psychiatrist?

For the record, where do you rank this amongst episode 7, 8, and Rogue One? None of these have blown me away, but they have to an extent entertained me as much as a modern day huge budget film can. Episode 8 is the biggest question mark to me -- so many good things and some that are just so unbelievably bad. Did they put in every single frame they filmed?

Slightly better than Rogue One, I guess. :|

I've not seen the whole SOLO movie yet, as I fell asleep. But... I did feel the SOLO actor actually nailed some of Harrison Ford's physical traits to the point I felt something. I hope I have enough energy in me to finish it tonight.

Though Enfys Nest is so fucking shit, it could be the worst thing in these new movies. She's down there with Rose and Jar Jar.

Apparently the main plot of the The Predators movie revolves around the Predators wanting to capture an autistic kid so they can absorb his autism into their species' DNA in order to become even stronger.

Click: **

OK for an Adam Sandler movie, but that is setting the bar incredibly low. After finding a remote in a Bed Bath and Beyond store (after all it wouldn't be an Adam Sandler movie without at least one obnoxious product placement) that can pause, rewind and fast forward reality, his character proceeds to ruin his life with the thing in a highly predictable fashion. Slightly less potty humor than usual.

Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom:. ***

Standard summer Blockbuster fare, with just enough flimsy plot to string together all the "people chased and/or messily devoured by dinosaurs" scenes. More entertaining than the first one, but I thought that one was just a chore to get through. Contains at least one Tyrannosaurus Rex Machina, which seems to be a requirement for these films.

I'm sure CinemaSins will rip it a new one soon enough.
