I've been watching a lot of horror movies lately per October requirements. Slugs is a so terrible-good 80's horror entry with a laughable script and some pretty disgusting gore effects. C.H.U.D was surprisingly not as bad as I thought it would have been. Daniel Stern has amazing hair in this one. Hellraiser and Re-Animator are both classics for obvious reasons and Killer Klowns from Outer Space still has some of the most amazing animatronics I've ever seen. Other than that, I also watched Brain Dead which was an enjoyable cheesy psychological horror movie, notable for starring Bill Pullman AND Bill Paxton, a true one-two cinematic punch if there ever was one.

I watched Blackenstein the other night and it was pretty much what I expected. I'm disappointed that Blackenstein vs. the White Werewolf never got off the ground, cause that shit would have been awesome. Also, fun fact, the props used in the lab scene were the same used on the original Frankenstein.

I just watched the Collection yesterday and I think it may fall under this category. It's a sequel (I never saw the first movie), but the story is self contained. Basically, a guy escapes from a Saw-style antagonist's torture lair and is tasked with leading a private security team back to the place to rescue a girl who was captured when he escaped. Not great by any means, but there are some cool traps and some nice gore, plus an all star cast featuring Tobias Beecher, Shooter McGavin, Bubbles Cousins, and Holt Mclaren.
Feedback will set you free.

Yes, it's recommened to watch the first "The Collector" to get the gist of the backstory that leads into "The Collection" sequel. Some of the devious mechanical traps shown in the first flick are simple but yet, effective, with their unsuspecting victims Saw-style. The ending of The Collection still has that bonus "snuff film" segement of the main character/survivor from the first film getting his revenge indeed. I always wondered if The Collector was going to be intended as a solo horror/gore flick one-off unto itself (with the way how it ends, a possible sequel could work as the on-going story still isn't finished yet) but my prayers were answered when it was announced that a proper sequel would be made/released. As it stands, The Collector/The Collection films end up being a two film affair to watch back-to-back for proper story progression without skipping a beat.

Could there be a third Collector/Collection/TheCollectors sequel in the works? Only time will tell if that's to be or not. If you look at the Hostel horror/gore film franchise, the 2nd one wasn't almost made but the ultimate decision was made to have it "green-lit". The 3rd sequel of Hostel 3, again, was slated for a proper big screen release but decided that the cheaper direct-to-video release would be best to recoup the expenses incurred during pre-production and whatnot. Sad but true -- tis seems like all the major horror film sequels are going this cheaper direct-to-video route these days (at least for the U.S. direct video marketbase, that is).

Finally checked out the 6th installment of Curse of Chucky...the fans demanded that the Chucky franchise return back to it's roots of the first two films and deliver a scarier Chucky flick this time around (rather than take a light-hearted parodying approach that beset the 3rd through 5th sequels) -- and it delivers in spades. Even has some slick spins and twist you won't see coming including a cameo appearance by a mystery actress. Universal Studios decided that it would be in their best interest to release CoC direct to video (on-demand, DVD & Blu-Ray formats + eventual streaming on Netflix to be determined at a later date) instead of going the more traditional big theatrical screen release (which means spending more $$$$ to do so). Viewing CoC's gag reels were hilarious...always good for a chuckle or two. Seems like the cast & film crew had fun in making it for the horror genre fans at heart. Some CoC's pre-production shots date back as far as the summer of 2012 (which is fairly recent, so to speak). So by using a combination of real-time animatronics, CG and real-time good ol' fashioned green-screen puppetry EFX, Chucky does come to life once again in this latest sequel. It ain't over yet, folks.

There's also another cameo after the credits, by the former child actor who starred in the first two films... Have you checked it?

Team America with pals yesterday. The news of the day was, they'd never heard of it before. I thought it was more culturally impactful (surely deserves to be).
You just might have forgotten how brilliant the flick is.

Fun fact: The Chiodo Brothers, who wrote, directed, and created all the animatronics for Killer Klowns from Outer Space were also responsible for the marionettes and visual effects for Team America.

Gravity

A space adventure set in a slightly divergent (the Space Shuttle is still in use) near future low Earth orbit. Sandra Bullock is Dr. Stone, the lone survivor of a disastrous fall of satellite fragments that takes out a space shuttle, the ISS, the Hubble Space Telescope and a Chinese space station: will she die in space, or return home? Featuring George Clooney as Kowalski, an old astronaut on his last mission (we all know how likely to reach retirement this kind of character is).

Good acting, excellent cinematography (the best use of 3D ever made) and special effects, very focused on the action story without sacrificing symbolic elements and aesthetic value. Recommended for everyone except people with seasickness problems (too much spinning around), but unfortunately blemished by strange behaviour and implausible physics, which more thoughtful writing would have prevented.
Why does Dr. Stone take off her helmet, or even her whole space suit, so eagerly? (Spoiler: it's good for acting.)
How can she fail to notice a fire in a ISS corridor, until the alarm goes off? (Spoiler: she needs a fire estinguisher later on.)
When Stone and Kowalski tumble around the ISS and end up firmly tied, how can they possibly "hang" outwards from taut ropes and have trouble pulling themselves in? (Spoiler: Kowalski is too tough to die otherwise.)
How can the swarm of space debris hit at such a high relative speed and more than once and at very different heights? (Spoiler: it is a serious film, multiple disasters would have increased the bad luck brought by Dr. Stone beyond all reasonable limits.)

It's awesome. The BluRay was really cheap so I bought it and watched it over the summer. Indeed, their 2nd best movie as far as I'm concerned... or maybe tied for 2nd?

If you watch the bonus material, you'll see that William H. Macy auditioned for a minor role. They asked him to read for Mr. Lundergard, and he didn't do so hot the first time so they gave him another one. Pretty sure he was eventually cast reluctantly, and then brought it.

Now, I just need to eat some pancakes and get laid.

EDIT: I love youtube

saw it saturday and loved it. in an age where vampires are sucking dick instead of blood, Byzantium gets an A for originality.

Jobs - haha, wow. what a piece of shit. "The Pirates of Silicon Valley" is far better.

Yes! But Buzz Lightyear is waking up from a different lie. Oblivion and Cloud Atlas are both about the same lie.

Finally took Rando's advice and watched Pacific Rim.
Wooden flat acting by Idris Elba and Max Martini does a terrible job with an Australian accent, but I did like the professor with glasses played by Charlie Day. The logo on their shoulders is ominous - the Communist eagle with pentagram.
Otherwise watchable with smooth action scenes. No Bourne Identity cut/skip/cut business :) .

Water for the Elephants

a movie about a circus. very dramatic and a good one too.

Life of Pi

Shoot, he was in "Thor"? That's really strange, as I don't even remember him, and usually he's quite memorable.

I...I know that this is kind of like arguing about which pile of crap smells better, but I'm sorry: DH5 > DH4. Yes, they're both not good, but DH4 was just *so* lousy, and DH5 was simply pretty lousy.

Ah, okay, gotcha. That makes sense now that I recall it. It wasn't exactly a large role in the movie, but now that you say that, it sounds right.

Jurassic Park

Some wine with your cheese? This movie is so cornball, even for you, Steve. I watch it periodically and find that I really enjoy the first hour when everyone is freaking out because holy shit dinosaurs, but it goes south once the power goes out. From then on it's vintage hollywood cornball: alpha white American male escapes with the white females while the angry monsters gobble up the lawyer, the fat guy, the Aussie, and two brothers.

The CG holds up as well as CG can, probably because they used it so sparingly.

Even with its faults, I defy any 10-year-old boy to not love this movie.

Oblivion: It was kinda dull and predictable. Other than the visuals and Melissa Leo's performance, the rest of the film was straight up blah. I mean, can we please get a movie where Tom Cruise is NOT basically playing himself in the lead? I seriously can't imagine Tom getting any direction other than, "just say the line, Tom. Hail LRH". Talk about lazy ass acting on his part. Hell, this is second movie in a row where he plays a character named Jack.
As for the story, extremely predictable and kinda irritating (SPOILER) For example, when Jack leaves behind his wife to sacrifice himself, its kinda pointless giving a damn since his copy was still lying around knocked the fuck out back on Earth. Also, this movie was too damn long. For such a lite story, they only REALLY needed 90 minutes, IMO. And don't get me started on America's Favorite Wise Negro Morgan Freeman pointless performance.
But, the visuals were tasty, though, and his commander checking in on him and his "partner" was pretty creepy at times.

Cosmopolis: Pretty much the only RPat film a nigga could tolerate on a full stomach, I pretty much only bothered to see this because of my nigga David Cronenberg. It was okay to watch and had some great scenes (both of which happen inside the limo), titties, and Paul Giamatti as some crazy ass dude. As a whole, the movie left me really cold and I don't truly feel as if I "got it", but taken scene-by-scene, I can't say it was a bad movie. Probably won't ever watch it again, but glad I did, tho.
