Wings of Honneamise: Sound Renewal Version
Not the cleanest print, but I can finally tick this one off of the must-see-at-the-theater list. I won't go into why this is such a must see, but I will say that even though most of the goodies were expected, I thoroughly enjoyed the 2 hours which I spent on a man date w/ a gamengai poster (someone who posts in the theater... not a piece of paper hanging on the wall). While the fusion of the soundtrack and video is near perfect, at the risk of sounding very unpopular, I will say that the soundtrack is very good... but not amazing. I will always rank Akira a little higher for that, but this is still damn near cinematic perfection. GaijinPunch rating: double awesome.
EDIT: How does IMDB have this one at 7.1? Good job, white morons.

I agree. You also agree, though, that Akira's soundtrack has an experimental dimension that Honneamise lacks, except in a few spots: the first is a highly experimental blend of different musical traditions (Gamelan, electronic music, something else), the second reduces a very western-y main theme re-arranged in several ways. If you don't, I will hate you forever and ever (+1 for sillyness).GaijinPunch wrote: While the fusion of the soundtrack and video is near perfect, at the risk of sounding very unpopular, I will say that the soundtrack is very good... but not amazing. Despite recommending someone watch all three Death Wish movies a while ago (~15 pages ago!), I freely admit I had never seen Death Wish 2... until last night!
Heh, I can see why drauch likes this one most of all. Many unpleasant scenes, but after that initial 20-or-so minutes, it turns into a fun, grim, nihilistic exploitation flick -an interesting segue between the gritty decade of 70s films and the more over-the-top nature of 80s films, in my opinion.
The ending theme was great. Jimmy page on the soundtrack? Awesome!

I couldn't love either of the first two Death Wish sequels. Just too obvious and cartoony, and I do dig the occasional movie where bad folks get their shit rearranged. And the third's machine gun scene... WTF was he firing, rock salts? I WANT SQUIBS! SQUIBS MOTHERFUCKER (special thanks to Mischief Maker)
Helluva shot on that boombox, though.

Yep, indeed. The most noticeable something else would be "kecak" found in Malaysia. If you like that style, then Ecophony Gaia by the same people responsible for the soundtrack is definitely worth checking out. Love it. I guess it's the experimental element of the film and it being carried on in the soundtrack that has left such an impression on me after all these years. I could never understand how so many die hard anime fans of the early 90's slagged of Akira as over-rated (all the while fapping non-stop at Sailor Moon).I agree. You also agree, though, that Akira's soundtrack has an experimental dimension that Honneamise lacks, except in a few spots: the first is a highly experimental blend of different musical traditions (Gamelan, electronic music, something else), the second reduces a very western-y main theme re-arranged in several ways. Re: Movies you've just watched
Akira's amazing soundtrack was one of the first things I noticed when I rewatched it a couple years ago, after a 10+ year hiatus. I don't know why I didn't appreciate that aspect of it back then, though experiencing it on shitty little tv speakers probably didn't help.
I remember really liking Honneamise's soundtrack too. I've been doing "animation nights" with friends these last two months actually, and its next on the list. Pelleas.net has been a great resource for the presumptious little speeches I give before and after each film, laying out some animator history and context for everyone.

I guess I was into weird music enough to hunt down the CD when I first heard it on my shitty 13" TV's speakers. So, I've always been a fan of it. When I saw it at the Bakuon Movie Festival, it sealed the deal for my Top 5. Image below which I know is hard to make out, but just note that the white things on either side of the screens are speakers. The theater I think held about 225 people, to put into perspective the acoustics. I went to take a piss and could still hear every word.blackoak wrote:Akira's amazing soundtrack was one of the first things I noticed when I rewatched it a couple years ago, after a 10+ year hiatus. Re: Movies you've just watched
Back in the early to mid-1990s, Blockbuster Video had opened up a side business venture known as Blockbuster Music that would cater to the CD music loving crowd. You could select any brand new shrink-wrapped CD and present it to the central DJ listening booth & it'd opened up for you to listen to/sample. There was no pressured obligation to buy the opened up music CD if it wasn't to your musical tastes/liking. Of course, they'd be resealed up for sale naturally (and the future buyer wouldn't know any better if said music CD has been opened up previously or not). It was during that time, I saw that they had the Akira OST up for sale and bought it right away. The insider liner notes go into greater detail of what equipment & musical instruments were used to create the multi-layered aspect that makes it so unique/groundbreaking. A fascinating read of Akira's OST indeed. Eventually, Blockbuster Video decided that it's BM venture wasn't doing so well and had they all shut down (since they had competition from The Wherehouse, Musicland and Tower Records to contend with back in the mid-1990s). So in hindsight, the overall Blockbuster Music venture was a failure from the start, albeit an expensive one indeed.
Checked out that silly romp known as Dead Sushi...a light-hearted journey into the world where sushi get their revenge on their human foes. It doesn't top the overall presentation of Tokyo Gore Police nor does it try to. Still has that trademarked streaming/spraying bloodly EFX as usual. And if you watch the ending credits, check out the hilarious outakes with the actors and actresses goofing it up between takes.
Gravity with George Clooney and Sandra Bullock presented in RealD 3D format looks to be an interesting sci-fi film despite the eventual outcome/ending. Of course, space exploration/experiments has it's dangers & inherent risks -- that is to be expected. The other notable sci-fi flick of Sunshine has it's crew giving into to the harsh elements of outer space and the sun indeed.

Ack, "weird". Yamaguroshi's (or whatever their name is) is technically very similar to modern minimalism styles of composing, especially Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Both approaches to music and composition are bottom-up and based on simple iterative/recursive principles (i.e. the feature short melodies repeated and manipulated on larger scales). While perhaps not "mainstream" (ack, "mainstream"), they can be rightfully be considered as "high register" music. I have taught (and will teach) a course on Language and Cognition in which I discuss the topic of music perception/cognition and structure, and we do go through these author (...with a colleague, I am not an expert in musicology but in Cognition and Math).GaijinPunch wrote:

I saw them perform the soundtrack live for the BR release. Was pretty awesome.... seeing all the percussion played in unison. For the crazy mix between Attack of the Clowns & Kaneda, they were all staring at the conductor... at almost a a 90 degree angle.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:I saw that they had the Akira OST up for sale and bought it right away. There are a few moments on the CD now where I have to be in the right mood... more on the Japanese traditional side rather than the Asian. But yeah, don't take everything I say at face value. I sometimes make comments from the view of everyone else.Ack, "weird".

Triangle (2009). Liked it, strongly atmospheric and very rewatchable horror film with a good human center. I don't normally dig this particular narrative concept, but here it's given genuine purpose as an expression of futile desire rather than pseudo-scientific geekfight fodder.
A Field In England (2013). A motley band of fuckwits and/or alchemists desert the English civil war to dig for treasure in the eponymous field full of shrooms. Strange things happen, pending mortal blast via birth of new planet an ongoing concern. Enjoyed! From the director of respective council estate gangster and hitman/horror films Down Terrace and Kill List, Ben Wheatley. Same endearingly low-fi production and setting, and blackly humourous vicious bent, but far more avowedly surreal. I like this guy.
Actually, enjoyed with some qualification. If you dig Monty Python-esque irreverence and absurdity, this does it well without overdoing it to the point of collapse or disappearing up its own arse. It is very daft, though, and may well waste your time if you don't share that sense of humour. This scene (minor spoiler) in particular had me simultaneously awestruck and on the verge of cracking up, a not unpleasant feeling. Mucho manlove for Reece Shearsmith (The League of Gentlemen) and Wheatley regular + 'orrible Oirish cunt Michael Smiley.

Finally checked out Gravity in digital RealD 3D on a DFX screen (comparble to a IMAX screen) + 18,000 watt surround system in place = priceless. Since the background scenery is 100% CG, it's still impressive nevertheless. My thing is, wouldn't there still be some folks inside those space stations though in real life? Clocks in at a mere 91 minutes in duration, the initial viewing seems a lot longer than that listed timeframe.

Stranded: An exceptionally unexceptional sci-fi creature blah-fest starring Christian Slater basically playing himself. Only watch if you literally have nothing else to do. Its like all the "OMG a creature is killing us one at a time" with literally no style or attempt to be anything more than that. Its not the worst film i've seen, (that honor is reserved for the other sci-fi film named Stranded starring Vincent Gallo--what a shitty film) but I wouldn't have been surprised if the script was three paper towels stapled together.
Prometheus: Finally got around to watching this. Like Oblivion, I regretted not seeing this in IMAX, 3d or whatever they do these days as the set design and visuals are AMAZING and quite immersive. I hated the characters save for Vickers, the captain and his two co-pilots, and that robot dude. Everyone else I couldn't wait to see die, especially that snarky asshole scientist and his annoying wife. The makeup effects for Weyland was laughable, and the writing was pretty shitastic. Everyone on the internet is beating themselves off intellectually on these "OMG BIG IDEAS" but i'm like fuck all that shit, this story sucks deceased dingo dick. The reveal at the end was lame and I wouldn't have been looking for it if it weren't there. Unlike alot of you fuckin nerds, I didn't go in expecting anything more than some awesome visuals and that's what I got. Other than that, this movie was fucking pointless.
Django Unchained: Real nigga movie. I loved this movie. This and Scarface, my nigga. Before this movie, I didn't give a damn about Leonardo, but he went all the way in as Calvin Candie, that performance was raw as fuuuuuccccccckkk. Also, god bless QT for a new entry to my top 10 greatest movie shootouts of all time list. I was deeply impressed by this movie, unfortunately, its the best black movie no nigga director would have been able to make (maybe Melvin Van Peebles in his prime, I dunno).

Outpost (2007). You'd think a horror movie about a bunch of mercenaries trapped in a bunker with undead Nazis would perform serviceably, but this one just about manages not to. Never surpasses middling slasher fare and the pacing is far too slow for the thin material.

Oliver Stone's Savages.
Not really sure why he made it? Seems a bit of an anomaly. Themes of cause and effect and violence. Watchable but forgettable.
Depp and Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger.
A lot of fun and contains some cryptic stuff too. But I won't get into that.

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2
It starts off right from the ending of the first movie, and has a somewhat darker plot that makes this a little more for older kids. But come on, some of the food gags in the movie were done nicely, and the pickles going fishing made me laugh. So pretty much, the machine invented from the first movie found a puddle, and went nuts making animals made of food. I enjoyed it, even if its not the greatest animated movie ever, its still worth a watch, but I didn't see anything that made me want to see it ever again in 3D.

So anyhoo, my local film society has been gracing ye olde theater with all sorts of goodness. Earlier this week it was The French Connection, and last night it was Mr. Bug Goes to Town (40s animation excellence). More great movies to follow: Colossus: The Forbin Project, Million Dollar Legs, Alien, and more!
I'm pretty lucky to see all these movies on the big screen. Mr. Bug was particularly well-attended.

Nice to have a local theater that actually gives a shit. Definitely jealous there, and that's some good stuff they're showing as well. My buddy actually works at a local theater and we get to use the projector after hours, but that's kinda cheating, I suppose.
