Well apparently someone at A24 lost their nerve and they up and announced The Green Knight hitting the usual streaming services on Thursday.

Great, now I don't have to figure out how to get the A24 app onto my TV!

Le Samourai [1967]

A professional assassin creates an air tight alibi after pulling a contract job. Of course, everything unravels. i'm not familiar with French cinema but this was quite enjoyable. French noir, I supopse. Features a lounge that, if still around, would be my favorite hangout spot for certain. Currently on HBO Max here in the US.

If you liked that, check out his other stuff like Army of Shadows and Le Circle Rouge which may be on there as well.

I am going to see if I have the free time to see this this weekend at the theater. I've been really wanting to and it's a great excuse to leave my hot, mostly un-airconditioned apartment. :?

Annette.

Leos Carax

It was an impressive movie. Visually impressive, well produced, impeccably crafted. I didn't love it though. It was too slow for me and the movie as opera theme was too relentlessly downbeat for me. There were moments I truly enjoyed here and there, but all and all felt like a slog.

It'd be a great movie for film class because you could talk about what was happening during the slow parts.

Now there's something i would like to watch. Hopefully it will screen at a local theatre. I don't mind slow at all, some of my favourite are pretty slow so. Anyway thanks for reminding me about that one :)

If you want to see it in a theater, I would act quickly. I saw the last show at my local place, and it's already on Amazon to rent.

Well I'm in Lisbon and the usual art house cinema still didn't screen it...yeah home might be an option.

Was just thinking about Peter Jackson's King Kong. I actually..... l, l, l... like the early parts of the film. Quirky characters, going off on an adventure, giant insects fucking eating people, it's great.

... everything after the monkey appears is shite though. I think this is a Garfield Without Garfield situation, where the star only makes the show worse.

It's a very strange, very gorgeous movie.

Definitely worth watching at least once, glad I saw it in a theater.

The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice
Still my favorite Ozu film. Yes even over Floating Weeds and Tokyo Story. It to me is his best take on a failing marriage and how it doesn't happen overnight.

I'm reminded of this shade thrown by Akira Kurosawa while discussing his new "Seven Samurai" film:
“Japanese films all tend to be rather bland in flavor, like green tea over rice. I think we ought to have richer foods, and richer films. So I thought I would make this kind of film entertaining enough to eat.”
Just streamed The Green Knight (on a pretty good home theater setup). Beautiful movie, but much more straightforward adaptation than the trailer indicates. I was expecting it to be something far-out like Julie Taymor's "Titus" (recommended), but it turned out to be a gorgeously shot and faithful adaptation of the poem.

Glad you liked it! Had you not seen it before? The TCM collection is worth the $15 for HBO Max alone. Then you get some usually good HBO stuff, and now their hot garbage they're using to compete w/ Netflix.

Less TCM and more their deal with Criterion. Has all the Lone Wolf and Cub films too(which are MUST sees).

Well they are curating the list. Even their non-criterion's are pretty solid choices usually. While the rotation could stand to be a bit quicker they have a ton of Japanese stuff from past eras. I should try to watch one a week in general but, busy these days.

Dynamo
Bruce Li stars in one of the few movies he ever did that one could call decent. He's a cab driver who gets seen by a talent agency after they happen upon him stopping thieves from stealing a cab and beats them to a pulp. Gets taught to strengthen his martial arts and such to be their new star but gets pretty unhappy with it all. Nicely done but nothing more, nothing less than you expect from a brucesplotation film that tried to do things a bit differently.

The Bob Ross doc.

I love Bob Ross, no lie. Started watching as a kid when he was still alive. Laughed at his hair, but still watched.

He got me through some dark times last winter too.

Doc was kind of sad. Kowalski's really fucked his son over, Steve deserved better.

Finally saw Green Knight in the theaters last night. Well worth a watch. Probably one of the best fantasy movies to come out in years. I like that it bucked the trend of making fantasy/knight settings more realistic - it really leans into the weird aspects of medieval literature/mindset... Why are there giants? Why not? How does magic work? Who knows!?

I also liked that the director trusted me enough to figure things out by leaving aspects of the story ambiguous, figurative, and sometimes surreal. I don't admit to understand everything that happened, but this isn't a movie to really 'ponder' all of life's mysteries, as its themes are pretty straightforward. I can only imagine this more 'artistic' and perhaps mature way to tell a story is going to make most people dismiss the movie or dislike it, especially the ending.

Well worth a watch! There was only about 15 or so people in the theater with me, but I suspect this movie is just about at the end of its run, and it was a late weeknight show.

Trying to dig up the good stuff on Netflix

First up is Below Zero

Was really surprised by this one. Plenty of unexpected thrills here. Felt really fresh and unique.

Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil

Lots of interesting imagery here. Pretty wild story that I’m guessing is pulled from some really old folklore and carries out that vibe throughout flawlessly.

The Devil Below

This one got a really bad rap. But hey I’d take this over a quiet place any day. Maybe that’s why I liked this one. Just tried Quiet Place 2 and there was literally nothing happening for the longest time and the monster was really generic. I mean the Quiet Place monster is obviously a ripoff of the Stranger Things monster. It’s like someone watched Birdbox and thought to put in the Stranger Things monster. So lame. This movie at least moves things along nicely and I thought the monsters were more interesting. Despite looking like some naked dudes covered in some kinda cheap paper mache stuff the design is sorta unique at least with the worm head. A lot of the acting is kinda bad but the locals were kinda funny. Never heard of Alicia Sans before but I thought she was easy enough on the eyes.
