Venom 1981

I was trying to work all day and couldn't get anything done so I decided to watch this weird little British film. I always thought it was a horror when I was a kid, and I remember seeing it on VHS in the late 80's. It's not a horror, though I'm not sure what it is - a companion piece with Who Dares Wins? It's got an amazing cast, Klaus Kinski, Oliver Reed, Sterling Hayden, Nicol Williamson and Susan George.

Kinski and Reed didn't get on and you can see it in the film, though they're both really good. The basic plot is them planning to kidnap an kid for a ransom. It goes tits up and they end up stuck in the boys house under siege from the police with a black mamba snake slithering around. It's pretty funny, Kinski is on top form and for once he isn't dubbed. Even this shitty film looks pretty good in widescreen. Kinski turned down Raiders of the Lost Ark for this, bonkers, but I guess it's a bigger part.

Enjoyable in an odd time capsule kind of way. But really it's pretty poor.

Hey I'm almost 3% moved to care about the Unbreakable thrillogy. At least it's not yet another dressed up Star Wars clone.
Oh god. Disgusting.

I don't really get DC's live action strategy completely. With Smallville, Arrow, The Flash etc - it seems to be moved more by the Supernatural + Vampire Diaries (a series about horny vampires that don't keep or read any fucking diaries) crowd. IE - a demographic of angry 13 year old girls.

I checked in on what happened in their animation scene over the last 11 years I haven't been paying attention to it - all kinds of neat stuff. Many continuities of the stories, so that things don't become an ineditable mountain of mythology mashed potatoes. Batman has a son named Damien now! He's a stuck up snobby elitist douchebag asshole to the extreme. Hates everyone (that isn't his dad), and everyone hates him. He's the best ever.

Every youtube comment section is always filled to the brim with "why can't their live action movies be this good?"

The problem with the current DC universe is it's not dark enough!
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Watched The More The Merrier. Hilarious movie with great performances by Joel McCrea, Charles Coburn, and Jean Arthur. Surprised to hear damn used so many times in a movie from the 40s. "Damn the torpedos"

The dialogue and the jokes were pretty great, making the movie worth watching indeed.
Funny we keep watching the same movies. I enjoyed this quite a bit. I also have In a Lonely Place, Out of the Past, and The Third Man, though I haven't watched them yet.

The comment section for the Captain Marvel flick has the usual plethora of people who are dead inside, but there are some neutral and positive comments in there. (Still mad at DC for renaming the character after the wizard 'cause their surveys said people are dumb.)

All this talk about The Shining 2, Spaceballs 2, the live action Aladdin prequel starring Will Smith as a rapping genie, made me re-watch The Three Amigos. Inside my head, because the movie is burned in there. Always a nice time.

Know what else? Ponchos also happen to be the superhero costume that Bruce Willis wears to protect against his one fatal weakness - water.

I thought Aquaman looked kinda fun tbh.

Then again, I was expecting it to be jammed up its own ass with misjudged gravity ala Man of Steel. :O

Still not gonna see it. 3;

The Searchers (1956)
It was fine, I guess. John Ford's other movies with John Wayne I saw were more interesting than this one.

I guess (I don't care really, pls indulge) they'll be using DR SLEEP as the model?

I'd prefer MM's classy prequel pitch! At least we'd get a decent Half in the Bag out of it! :O
Mischief Maker wrote:Will it be worse than the prequel to "The Thing?"

I know, let's do a prequel to "The Shining!" Finally our questions will be answered about what exactly happened to the Grady the previous caretaker and his family.

SPOILERZ:

Grady goes insane in exactly the same way Nicholson did in the original except he loses his mind in a matter of hours instead of days; complete with the nutty manuscript, only THIS one is handwritten! Grady's daughters are menaced by the ghost of a little boy in 50s clothes who morphs into a screaming bloody demon. This time not only does a river of blood come pouring down the hallway, it floods the entire hotel and the victims have to smash a window open and slide down the roof to escape. The scene from the original book where the topiary animals come to life and attack the family are rendered in unconvincing CGI. Grady, of course, says, "Heeeeere's Jack Paar!"

In the end, when the hotel owners and police are examining the bloody aftermath in horror, Dick Hallorann, played by Cuba Gooding jr, makes a solemn oath to his friend Larry (From the sno-cat rental place) that he will use all his psychic powers to make certain this never happens again.

Christine (1983)
Horrifying and ridiculous at the same time. :o Funnily enough, this was my second time watching the movie, after seeing it on TV when I was 9 or 10, which makes it the first Carpenter movie I ever saw.

How The West Was Won (1962)
According with this movie, it was won without black or Chinese slave labour.
That aside, a well structured and interesting set of stories with an amazing cast, wonderful wardrobe and backgrounds, and orgasmic Cinerama shots.

How in the fuck did I miss that the first time around? My girlfriend, who is of a different generation than me, stares me in the eye and asks how I can handle this forum (due to the fact that the theme/color scheme is admittedly somewhat dated). Then I show her posts like the one above.

Makes it XTRA-SAD the "pro" stuff these days tends to SUCK BIG DICK™. (ty Glenn Danzig)

Aw geez, you guys are embarrassing me!

But seriously, the unnecessary sequel/prequel/reboot that's depressing me the most right now is someone intentionally making a grounded and realistic Suspiria with a muted color palette. Who could this appeal to? Are there really people out there who think Suspiria is memorable because of its plot?

If you're going to make a new Suspiria it should be something... like this!
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

I don't think there is any need for a Suspiria remake, but for any kind of remake to be worth anything it has to do it's own thing. Which really means you lose everything that made the original so good. Remakes are pointless, they're just a marketing ploy because the "brand" is already out there.

The only chance the remake has of doing anything worthwhile is taking some of the themes of the original and going its own way. That's what remakes have to do. Otherwise you just get fan films. Both are shit.

With MM's Shining prequel isn't there something like the scene of blood coming out of the lift in Ready Player One. I looked on YouTube to see the Shining stuff and it's fucking garbage. Green ghosts waltzing around. The fuck.

On another note. I watched Billy Liar last night. I love this film. It's one that is as good as all the praise that's heaped on it. Old England.

Well to be honest I was just giving myself an excuse to link Demonitron.

It seemed in poor taste to just say, "Oh you like short movies, do you? Well here's Ninja Eliminator 4!" (not safe for work)

The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004) - Stephen Hopkins

Despite being intrigued by the thought of Geoffrey Rush playing Sellers, I put off watching this film for years.
My reasoning being, that any attempt at a worthwhile account of the mercurial Sellers , would most likely fail miserably.
While this film does not quite succeed, either as a film or as a portrait of the man himself, it does have its moments and those moments are very good indeed.

Other hobbies that require something playing in the background lately. As such, some rewatches.

Better Off Dead:
A quintessential 80's flick, and not related to John Hughes at all. Still hilarious. Plenty of shit that simply would not fly today... not in a PG-13 comedy anyway. (This predated PG-13 though).

Happy Gilmore:
A guilty pleasure. Totally ridiculous, but back when Adam Sandler had at least something going for him. I actually like Christopher McDonald. A pre-famous Ben Stiller is quite interesting to look back on.

The Magnificent Seven (1960)
I didn't watch this before as I thought it would be a simple "Seven Samurai for people who don't like Japs" movie. How wrong I was!
Brilliant casting, kudos goes to Eli Wallach, who went on to play Tuco just like Calvera, a crazy misfit Mexican character that you just love to hate.
Can't say much of the story, it's an adaptation of Seven Samurai in a Western setting, which works surprisingly well, held together by the mentioned casting. I would recommend watching them both. :)

Watched "Mission Impossible: Fallout" in IMAX last night. Pretty good, but I don't think that "The IMAX Experience" really added anything to the experience at all.

Don't go expecting the pinnacle of the series, but if you go wanting a good ride/fun time, it's there to be had.

And anytime anyone kills off _____ ______, it can't be all bad.

I don't know how to add the SPOILERS thingies.
