My point was the horrifying Sonic was the only interesting thing about the whole film.

It certainly wasn't Jim Carrey doing Mike Meyers' "shh!" routine from Austin Powers.

With the new normal-looking Sonic, I expect its DVDs to fill many a bargain bin next to Angry Birds and the Emoji movie.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Oh, no doubt. I mean, the original Sonic looked horrible... but it's not like it was a piece of shit surrounded by some type of amazing production. Very curious how it's getting made. Is Sonic even a household name anymore? I predict a bomb.

I still think the new model needs a little more work.

From what I've read, this entire affair was not actually a publicity stunt. And my brain just refuses to accept it. Test screenings? Actual prints? Promotional materials? Wild. It really speaks to the creative power of a committee made up of MBA's instead of normal appropriate humans. "There's always more, and it's always worse."

As to its bombing, I doubt it'll be that bad. It's mindless fare engineered to get 90's kids to bring in their first or second kid. It's mathematically beautiful in how soulless it all is. The reception of the new trailer on Youtube is unusually positive.

My standard for the "bomb" threshold is somewhat high. This certainly isn't going to be a Caveman's Valentine on that front..

I was of mild good cheer at the apparent veering back from star-spawned horror to the comfortable nothing of the Walmart bin. It made some of those furries really happy and also gave the professional victim class a bit more to work with after the toxic fans forced the studio to redo Sonic's stupid face at gunpoint. Everyone's a winner!

Go, Sonic! Go forth and fund a few more M2 ports and also a Chris Chan meltdown or two.

Sonic's a good boy, his crap games and furry comics have funded many great things over the years. If we get PS4 Daytona out of this I'll be most pleased.

Oh god, I used to have an internet friend that was obsessed with Chris. I know he's a character, but it's still mean to amplify mockery upon the disabled.

Just feels more appropriate to watch tirefires like Casey Serin to feel better about yaself.

And now I spent 2 hours on the wiki and reacquainted myself with the term "boyfriend-free girl". Thanks BIL.

That fanart looks sick.

Maybe all corporate art is pathetic in comparison to the internet. A lot of us aren't terribly excited by Diablo 4 since it feels like something that should have came out 9 years ago called "Diablo 3" and been built into a massive, giant wonderful game by now, instead of a rough clone of a 20 year old game (24 years, by the time D4 actually comes out).

Just a small twist is all it takes to keep something from being necrophilia.

I used to be a huge fan of Alan Partridge, Nathan Barley and similar English "social horror," but increasingly I've found even their best stuff pales in comparison to the Infinite Shit Machine™ that is the internet. It's obvious, I suppose... even talented, charming middlemen like Steve Coogan and Armando Iannucci can only ever intermediate. At some point, dead-eyed schadenjunkies are gonna want to mainline the real stuff, and watch some poor schmuck lose his house trying to rescue the prince of Nigeria from ninjas. ImageImage

EDIT: coincidentally, infamous baguette-chomping Gaming Frenchman JAPJAQUES was brought up again just recently. Judging by a solid two decades of forum sperging gold, he's Nathan Barley: CPS2 Changer Edition. The home conversion can't hope to compete.

Coming to America (1988)
Besides the star cast and the wonderful barber shop scenes, it was OK, I guess, another late 80's comedy. Not sure what to make of the fact a sequel is being made. :|

Dolemite Is My Name (2019)
Oh boy, this was awesome! Eddie Murphy really deliver it here, and Wesley Snipes was cool too. Really fun time with this one.

re: the new sonic trailer's positive reception, i feel like i have some sort of infinite capacity for astonishment regarding things like this. do people really get this excited over making a studio perform a change like this? the answer is obviously yes, the history of anything like this happening makes it an obvious yes, and yet i'm still taken aback. i've seen numerous tweets with massive numbers of retweets from blue checkmarks about how they "doing sonic right," and "good on them," after searching just a little on this.

it feels like some sort of very bleak statement on our times! politically generate some outrage, then toss a small bone and watch as you become more celebrated than you would have been if you got it right in the first place. i feel like if such a movie somehow offends you, it would be the easiest thing in the world to just not pay attention to it, but alas! now here we are with it being championed as the big studios actually taking a moment "to really listen." god damn these people are easy to manipulate :[ hard not to see the greater political allegory in this with popular culture, today.

- - - - -

anyway, i watched let the right one on last night and frankly adored it. really cute movie.

Blow Out (1981)
A great thriller by Brian de Palma with John Travolta and John Lithgow. The whole usage of sound effects to uncover the murder was interesting. The faux giallo movie in the intro was funny and horrifying as well.
The ending was...different.

LTP, but I finally saw Joker, and on one hand it was exactly what you'd expect from the trailers, on the other it was way, way, way better than I had expected.

It's a pretty comical and simplistic, mainstream-friendly caricature, but despite that its take on America's blind reverence for the upper class that doesn't give a shit about people who don't have the means to make by on their own, hit me like a fucking sledgehammer.

Alice in Wonderland(1951): ***1/2

Saw this one for the first time in years when it appeared on Disney+. Probably my favorite of the classic Disney animated movies (my wife has a particular fondness for the Cheshire Cat, and we've got a number of art pieces depicting him in the house). Much like many of the classic Disney movies it has a pretty short runtime (about 75 minutes) yet still seems to find plenty of time to go completely off in the weeds (the "Walrus and the Carpenter" portion is a good example of this) and the plot tends to ramble and ultimately doesn't go much of anywhere (which, I suppose, is true of the original Lewis Carroll book as well.) Still, the classic visuals hold up pretty well even if the plot (such as it is) doesn't.
We want you, save our planet!

The Long Goodbye (1973)
Almost perfect noir, taking the setting from the book's 1940's to the 1970's in a very fluid transition. Elliott Gould plays a different Philip Marlowe from Humphrey Bogart, taking into account the new setting. He slightly reminds me of Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop, with the smoking and the carefree, relaxed attitude to everything.
A must watch indeed. Read the book first, if you can.

I just watched the second Fatal Fury OVA. Joe Higashi and Andy were both major assholes in this. Tony was also Scrappy-Doo levels of annoying and had absolutely zero impact on the plot. And yet, I really enjoyed it. Mai was a lot of fun and Krauser was a compelling badass. More flawed than the previous OVA, but a little better overall.
There was a time, in the era of great chaos, when the Earth and the moon were at war with each other. A daredevil from the moon piloted a bizarre aircraft. It was feared, and because of its shape, called... Einhander.

Confidential Assignment
I enjoyed this North Korea meets South Korea buddy cop movie. Action was good save for a little bit of crappy CGI in some of the car chases and the unfitting music in some of the fight scenes. North Korean goes to South Korea and has to team up with a low level detective to stop a defector from making tons of counterfeit US money with plates he stole. Has some fun moments, and some good action. Just wish they could have chosen a different style for the music.

Guess I should have put 2019 there.

I watched Harakiri (1962, Kobayashi) last night. I believe BIL recommended this one previously and it delivered. How does a true manry man prop themselves up while starving and wounded? WITH THEIR SAMURAI SWORD OF COURSE. The slow burn build up of despair for the main character before climaxing to the only possible ending was tremendous. I like what this movie had to say about corrupt governments and general compassion for other human beings.

Man, I want to watch it again now. Image A slow-burner on a warehouse full of TNT. Much like the American cable channel of the same name, it knows drama! Mischief Maker recommended it as part of a spiritual anti-samurai trilogy, and thus I will always mention its companions The Sword of Doom and Samurai Rebellion. Those are excellent too, but Harakiri is the must-see with its sparely searing delivery.

I believe I had already seen those two and me posting about one of them is what got you to recommend this. Sword of Doom was so good, a shame we didn't get the trilogy that was planned.

Ford vs. Ferrari - Saw this in the cinemas with the old man last Sunday. Didn't felt like it drag on despite the running time. It was an alright biopic. Nothing felt overly-dramatized, but I also admit that I didn't read that much on the true story behind Le Mans '66 before watching the movie. Kinda surprised that Ken Miles agree to the three-way tie (practically throwing away the winning streak he had) after that one Ford exec tried to screw him too many times.

Also tried to marathon both Blade Runner movies last night, watching the prologue shorts between, but felt asleep for most of BR2049. I remember really liking BR2049 back when I saw it in theaters, but I always wondered by Joi didn't just kill Joe when she had the chance more than once.

A shame indeed they never got around to the rest of the Bodhisattva Pass films. Though I suppose SOD by its nature works as a brutal one-shot, haha. As some small consolation, I never tire of observing a protean Tatsuya Nakadai nail those three sharply-contrasting jidaigeki roles.

You've very likely seen it (or at least seen me recommend it  not much over a month ago) - but reposting for quality's sake: necessary caveat for The Human Condition and Sanjuro spoilers aside, this Criterion interview with him is a good watch.

This reminds me that January aka F Going Outside + Cold Hands = Poor Player season is when I tend to get some movies in.

my two favorite japanese flicks i've watched are probably eros + massacre and pastoral: to die in the country, if you want to add onto that list. pastoral may actually be a running contender for my favorite movie. i only watched eros + massacre a couple of weeks ago but a day hasn't gone by that i've not thought about it.

- - - - - - - - - -

watched two movies back-to-back last night with my roommate and my friend who loves movies (and usually picks them out! don't mistake me for having a developed taste, yet)

first was possession (1981)

a completely absurd work that the director filmed during a messy divorce. the genre is listed as "psychological horror drama," but it's genuinely as much of a comedy, at times. it goes through an incredible range of cathartic venues (from extreme domestic brutality to mental breakdowns - all handled with both appropriate gravity and a self-satirical sense of humor through deliberate overacting) and feels like one of the most honest and ugly movies i've ever watched. this is one of those films i imagine an audience would be dead quiet for, though i can't imagine the director not intending the audience to laugh. really great movie.

next up was in the mouth of madness (1994)

the running theme of the night apparently being "sam neill repeatedly punches women in the face," we continued with a john carpenter movie i'd never seen before. while i think it might take a certain kind of desensitization and experience with the horrors of the human condition to have an honest (and, again, imho intended) laugh at possession, i have a hard time believing that in the mouth of madness was not intended to be a general audience comedy. this feels almost like a goosebumps movie more than the obvious stephen king/lovecraft pastiche it certainly is, and i can't imagine carpenter intending to scare anyone more than those with the most fragile of sensibilities with this one.

mind you, this isn't a dig at the movie or suggestion it didn't do what it intended, i genuinely think it's a very solid comedy. it never goes as brazenly tongue-in-cheek as something like evil dead II, but there's a consistent lack of any real commitment to seriousness and a lot of hilariously timed cuts that feel there for pure amusement. there are some really great puppets featured in the movie, and i have a suspicion that carpenter specifically went for sam neill with this one because of his performance in possession. a solid experience, tbh!

Spooky movies.

The Witch
I liked it. Does well at building dread and has good performances from a mostly-young cast. A minor irritation was the postscript claiming the film was directly from "written accounts of historic witchcraft." It's fine to have evil chaos witches in movies, but in real history, there were no witches in New England, just hypocritical Christians executing people over claims vindictive or imagined.

Wounds
If you want to have any hope of getting me invested in a story about an evil cell phone, you need more than CG insects.

Karen Doesn't Dream
An uncharismatic lead alternates between stumbling around and watching videos of other people sleeping. Turns out this is a student film. Before putting it out there, there's a realization they should have had.
