Hoping for better in the Incredibles 2.
Agreed. It could be a very long time before another animation sweeps people off their feet the way Disney's Moana did two years ago.

Brad Bird is writer/director again, for Incredibles 2, so that's a good sign. I enjoyed Coco quite a bit, though.

Incredibles 2:

Enjoyed it way more than just about any Pixar since the last Toy Story. I haven't seen them all but they don't all woo me, by any stretch. But, any flick I can take my mother and son too, doesn't offend her and make him rotten, that I can not get bored with is a success to me.

Sukiyaki Western Django
Just as good a movie as I remember. The shootouts are fantastic, but I could have done with an extra English subtitle option other than SDH. Some of the English speaking isn't so great in this, but that doesn't take away from an otherwise good movie. Looks good on Blu Ray too, so that's a plus!

I guess it depends if it is just raw not cleaned scans or cleaned up/restored. Hopefully the later.

almost raw, with only some essential color correction in scenes that had been too altered by time.
still bad contrast and colors most everywhere. the dots, scratches, and sometimes misaligned film don't bother me compared to that.
but mainly the thing is there's no purpose, iirc they're not even useful as references nor candidates for restoration.

ahh makes sense. Best to just grab one of the restoration releases then. Maybe after Lucas bites the dust we'll see good quality official releases of the original versions.

I'm watching Rocky 3. It's fucking brilliant. Cool arcade footage at the start.

Edit: So weird. I liked this when I was a kid, then hated it and Stallone in the 90's. That brash 80's shtick killed films for me then. Now I'm an old fart I think it's a pop art classic. I'd kill for a new film like this now.

These days writers mistake complexity for depth.

I suppose it's like the Godzilla sequels. It was a crime that they even considered Rocky 2, much less that he defeated Apollo Creed after barely training at all. But by the time 4 rolled around, "Eh, might as well enjoy the cheese aspect."

I watched all six Rocky movies a few years ago when I bought the Blu-ray set and it astounds me that IV is mostly just montages. On that note, I wish they had kept the Vince DiCola soundtrack for V.

Yeah, Rocky IV is basically a series of music videos. Pretty funny though. I hope ITV puts it on next week as they seem to be showing them in order. I'll have to check out Vince DiCola's OST. Btw, his soundtrack for the Transformers movie sounds a lot like Rocky IV. There may be a couple of tracks that are used in both.

I always got a Unicron vibe from Ivan Drago's entrance music.

The Vince DiCola music works way better for Rocky V's training montage than the hip-hop music they went with in the final cut. It establishes Rocky and Tommy's friendship quite nicely, making Tommy's eventual betrayal much more dramatic when it happens. With the hip-hop music, you just know Tommy is going to sell-out to George Washington Duke at some point and wonder why Rocky is wasting his time with a guy who doesn't appreciate his efforts.

"Roman J. Israel, Esq."

Actually, a disappointing movie with Denzel Washington. He still does a decent job, but the script does let him down, and the direction of the movie is pretty self-indulgent, I'd say. It makes for a rather long watch. Denzel can't rescue this one, though. Oddly enough, as much as I normally hate Colin Farrell, he's not the reason this film is lousy, or drags.

The script just fails.

Ball busting both sexes for the win

That billboard movie.

The way McDormand goes the straight line and never in circles, she recommends herself to the future gender swap remake I'm sure they are preparing and initializing as soon as old man Eastwood kicks it. Well, do ya, punk? Hey, I gots to know...
With the P.O.V. I recoiled from the engagement. Bit cheesy with the bandages up the frames. Would have done fine without it.

The City of Violence
Seen this a bunch, but never on blu ray. Looks fantastic!
Young Hero
You're not watching this for a fantastic plot at all. Japanese beating the crap out of kung fu masters and students is the main draw here for the plot. The action is done quite well though and that's where the movie shines.

Mute (2018) - Duncan Jones

Well Goddamn! What a turd!

The vacant, mute cuck and his blue-haired girlfriend with the challenged accent(s), played by remarkably annoying actors - Alexander Skarsgård and Seyneb Saleh.
The pair of surgeons playing M.A.S.H.
The paedophile.
The "Black Russian" crime boss.
The brothel of babysitting prostitutes.

Each character and situation more detestable that the last. Bear in mind, that there is no indication that the film is meant to repulse. It is, simply, trash.

Was Duncan jones' Moon (2009) a fluke? Was it even "Duncan Jones"?

Well, since "Moon", he has done;
Source Code (2011) - tv calibre fare
Warcraft: The Beginning (2016) - . . . . . . . .
And now this big budget, pretentious, indulgent dud.

Yeah, somethings not koscher here.

PS. For the Bowie fans out there, the dedication at the credits reads;

In memory of those who became parents.

Out of the Past (1947)
Noir movie with Robert Mitchum (superb performance), Kirk Douglas (very nice villain), and Jane Greer (how much double crossing again? ). The story structure was nicely done, no boring flashbacks. I recommend this one to everyone.

Ready Player One (2018) - Steven Spielberg

Well, this definitely feels like some kind of Nadir in my Cinema viewing life.

First, let me get the only plus out of the way; Spielberg's onscreen death. Viscerally satisfying. "S.S GO HOME"

Ready Player One, is a jaw dropping intersection of mediocrity.
One; It is a burning shit heap of a film.
Two; it is the burning shit heap, that Spielberg's career ends upon.
Three; it shows promising signs that this may be where insatiably greedy, hilariously self unaware marketing, finally euthanises the Retro poseur's textbook display of The Chameleon Effect.
(like the Beatnik and the Hippie before them, these insufferable Hipster fucks must die! Oh, yes)

This "film" is the reference, self reverential, name dropping Olympics of pseudo geek douchebaggery .
This is 140 minutes of "i'm, like, 18 and i love Twisted Sister!", "i'm 13 and OMG, i only play Mario Kart, or something!!!" - youtube comments . . . . .

I have not read the book.
The plot device of having people from "the future" obsessed, not with their own nostalgia but with the nostalgia of a person from the past, is used unironically?
Please, somebody tell me that this Ernest Cline fellow, is not this fucking stupid?
This was the perfect moment in time, to expose all this generations culture vulture fakes and Cline misses it, while simultaneously exposing himself as a villainously forced geek?

This is all too much. I don't feel well. I think a personal moratorium on all new films is in order.

"Avengers: Infinity War"

Finally got to see it last night at the theater, and I thought I'd have the place almost all to myself. No such luck.

I liked it. It wasn't as good as, say, the first Avengers movie, but it was far better than the second. Enjoyable.
