After Midnight

Trite relationship drama with a random monster thrown in. I hated just about everything about this. And the finale... have you even been to a karaoke where someone who's neither a good singer or an entertaining failure gets on the machine, and everyone suffers through and claps politely after? If not, enjoy sitting through it in real time.

My wife and I have watched all of them. Good? Ha. Entertaining? Absolutely. I haven't clicked on your spoiler - going to see it at Alamo tomorrow, but my guess is at some point they'll be in space.

Haven't seen F9 yet, but in my book it's gonna' be pretty hard to top The Rock jumping a stolen ambulance off an overpass and crashing it into a Predator drone in mid-air for sheer audacity. That right there may just be the single most ridiculous thing ever committed to film.

Hope you brought some extra lotion, man.

I got a ticket to see Censor tomorrow since it seemed like it might be a fun horror flick. Brits might enjoy its conceit of a video-nasty censor discovering more than she bargains for while cutting up horror films. A premise kind of akin to that Berberian Sound Studio flick that I only really know from BIL's descriptions. At 86 minutes I certainly hope I won't be bored...

Then again I saw Goodbye Dragon Inn a few weeks ago and at 82 minutes it was one of the most boring, plodding, dull, and unlikable movies I have ever seen.

Oh nice, I saw RLM's Censor review in my recs and wondered what was up. Berberian seems even more envelopingly oneiric and stylish in hindsight, I'll probably watch 'em both. Compact runtimes rock ;3

In fact I threw away what remaining KY I had when I cleaned out my condo in Illinois. I am no longer a Chicagoan, and I'm fine w/ that. I know Lori is gonna come in and jack up property taxes next year. I'm stretched thin as it is. I may be the only person that didn't make out like a bandit in selling their place but it is a LOT less stress in my life.

...you know what the "FF" stands for, in the FF movies?

*skips punch-line*
*badump-thush!*
Chomsky, Buckminster Fuller, Yunus and Glass would have played Battle Garegga, for sure.

Sisters With Transistors (2020)

Documentary about influential women in electronic music. It was mostly cut together from existing documentary footage from other things over the years, but done a good way that tells a story very effectively. It's written by Laurie Anderson, who is probably best know as the wife of the late Lou Reed (Velvet Underground), but she's not really in it as far as I can see, and I wouldn't have known if her name wasn't attached to it.

Featured are quite a few lesser knowns, but also Laurie Spiegel, Suzanne Ciani, and the ineffable Delia Derbyshire (who composed and performed the Dr. Who themesong).

I 100% recommend it. Even if you have seen all the footage before, because if you have then you love this kind of stuff and you'll get a kick out the way this film presents it, and the new stuff included.

The Forever Purge just might be the best of the Purge movies. I don’t mind if this truly is the grand finale of the franchise, this is a good way to go out. We follow a Mexican couple trying to survive America long after the Purge holiday as over, as a group of terrorists calling themselves the Ever After Purgers or Purge Purification continue killing. Eventually, we get to the Mexican border and we are treated to an awesome Rambo: Last Blood-like finale. One of the terrorists even lets out a Wilhelm Scream during the final battle!

The Many Saints of Newark trailer just dropped.

The actor playing young Tony is kinda freaky.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Cheers, I keep forgetting that one exists. :o

That Gandolfini kid clearly ain't got the makings of a *checks comments* mudda fucka!

Shot of him lazing about with his LPs recalls Tony's crucial indolence well. Trailer looks kinda OTT, but then every one I've ever seen of the show did, too. Given what Chase has said about its genesis (unrelated story about Newark circa his youth) I'm hoping it's not as focused on the thoroughly well-documented Tony as it suggests - even if that Disney Wars subtitle (aieee!) suggests cold studio feet (was originally just called "Newark," IIRC).

Dickie Moltisanti is a fine anchor point for a prequel, a cod-legendary figure with a dubious aspect. Guessing the end of the trailer with Liotta explains a coupla three things about them TV trays.

Honestly if you'd said he did a Howie Scream I'd have my tickets booked already. It is criminal that the Howie continues to languish in stature behind the Wilhelm!

I like the oedipal touch that the actress playing young Livia is the spitting image of Carmella.

Did Gran Torino turn out any good?

Edit: Oh shit, that really is his kid! No need to call Maury Povich on this one.

Haha, yeah, they actually went ahead with his (AFAIK) totally green kid... I don't know, it doesn't inspire confidence on paper, but Chase and company were always crack shots.

Been forever, but I remember liking Gran Torino back at release. Eastwood jokingly told someone (Jay Leno IIRC?) that a new Dirty Harry would have him running around with a walker and doing lots of fishing. GT reflects that, no crazy OLDMANFORCE antics. Walt does fix the fuck out of a broken washing machine at one point. A compellingly soiled protagonist in the ballpark of Harry and Will Munny.

Ah, I've wondered myself. Completely slipped past me, but then I'm waiting on Saul to rack up a few more seasons before I marathon the bastard. From very peripheral glances, it doesn't seem to have left a bad impression.

To be honest, it’s been a while since I heard the Howie Scream… One of my favorite uses of the scream was in the prologue to Popful Mail for the Sega CD.

Same, first example that comes to mind outside of the eponymous defenestration is Ketsui's game over jingle. Image

IMO Censor was great, for what that is worth. Movie gets increasingly unhinged and cerebral as time goes on. I really lost track of what was happening, what was real/what was fiction, kind of like Videodrome (an oft-cited comparison in reviews it seems).

The only knock I have is an unnecessary really loud jump scare in the middle of the flick, but maybe it's milder if you're not in a theater. Love the general arc of the story and its overall downbeat nature, with a clear love to movie gore of olde.

I can only imagine those stuffy, awkward, and uncomfortable dinner conversations in the film is what family dinner is like every night across bongland.

Just saw The Tomorrow War. Fun movie, had a lot of good action in it. The only downside is that the movie is set on Christmas. Seriously, the whole "Christmas setting in movies" cliche needs to die already.

Censor (2021) Stylish, doom-laden metahorror, following a zealous young censor in the "Video Nasty" panic of 1980s Britain. A fine feature-length Twilight Zone ep, its 90 minutes thrumming with Lynchian dread. While its political thesis is nothing novel, the writers deserve credit for beaning their side of the aisle just as squarely, via reliably 'orrible Oirish cunt (and repeat winner of my coveted "AWW YEE, I LIEK HIM A LOT" award!) Michael Smiley.
