I was gonna come here to say similar. And, I guess I will stick w/ your plan to not say anything. Although I will say that the title I'm not a huge fan of, and even the trailer on Prime was only mediocre. I reluctantly put it on my tablet for a flight (yes, I flew), and was pretty pissed off when my fucking Bluetooth headphones died with 20 minutes to go. Seriously... wired is a far superior experience.

Anyway, very well done.

But it doesn't mention that it was meant to be a Buckaroo Banzai sequel -- just that they brought the original writer in for a rewrite.

Ah, went back and looked. True! Back in the day I remember it used to even be in the IMDB trivia, but now that's gone. Found a site that showed it once there as well, but then deleted for misinformation. I have no clue what to believe now. My perspective has been shattered. I think I'll just be glad they both exist.

I guess it was an urban movie legend that I remembered as the legend it was. Be kind, I definitely heard this information before Google and was undoubtedly told that it was true by a trusted video store manager that duped an unsuspecting younger me.

Yes. It's definitely in the ballpark of other stuff you've written about watching. I think that, at the very least, you would appreciate it for what it is.

I'd interested to hear your take on it.

While ya'll are on an 80's classics tip; 1984 specifically, don't pass up a free viewing of Hot Dog.. The Movie
I'd never seen it before uncensored. True 80's white privilege gem!

Yeah it's one of those 80's TnA comedy flicks. I think I somehow rented it when I was a teenager. Of course, it's quite eye popping when you're in junior high school. What a decade.

While it is lacking top-tier acting and directing, the character and story development far outclasses most recent Hollywood movies I've seen. There is apparent effort to provide substance in the movie besides TnA.
I'm particularly impressed with the character development and allowing some characters to dis each other but yet continue to be understanding and support each other - as well as allowing some 3rd tier characters to have some spotlight.
The theme of presenting judges who are influenced by marketing and television concerns was something no other production I'm aware of was putting out there in 1984 (an Olympic year).
From personal experience I can attest, Hot Dog... The Movie is pretty darn real and accurate to the time actually.
It doesn't have the polish of a John Hughes film, but it's as good as The Breakfast Club, imo.

The Rover (2014, Australia) - this one's all about the music (largely improvised, I believe). It also is about The Land (Southern Australia, I believe). But then again, film music in this one, oh Lord.

St. Elmo's Fire

Oh, nostalgia. I nursed quite a hangover on Sunday and needed something very mindless. This definitely qualifies. A huge caricature of the 80's, with some pretty dismal lines (both spoken and plot). But hey, if you want a throwback to the times, it delivers. But yeah, it's highly cheesy. Would definitely watch again. Many IMDB reviews calling out the obvious are worth a read.

If anyone wonders what sort of film as such The Rover is, I'd say it's a Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia kind of plot device put to use in near-future, after-collapse Australian settings. I just read the cinematographer Natasha Braier admits to be influenced by Christopher Doyle, and I suspected this much (even wondered if Doyle himself worked on it). It also is a crypto-Greek tragedy, something pretty unusual for a movie (especially Hollywood). The last one I saw before this one was The Grifters (1990) and prior to the latter - Chinatown (1974).

I couldn't recommend The Duellists (UK, 1977) enough - unjustly forgotten feature debut of Ridley Scott. "Better adaptation of Joseph Conrad's prose than Apocalypse Now" may not mean much to you [I believe that if spirit of Conrad lives in some film, it's at its liveliest in Locke (2013)].
So I could link to the first duel scene, but swordfighting in general tends to look good on stage or screen, even in otherwise poor films. I could praise the diligence of most-apparent Napoleonic period culture research, but if you've no problems with the way Vikings depicts its period culture, that won't do much good I'm afraid. No awkward horseriding by supposed hussars here, of kind even The Story of Adèle H. did not quite avoid. The only speck of dust I spotted on its make-believe was that wintertime Russia was blatantly filmed in Scotland, but this can be mercifully justified by the budget limitations, as can be Keith Ian Carradine and Harvey Keitel cast as Bonaparte's officers speaking US English (they could well be the best available actors known little enough at the time to be affordable as the main cast). On the other kind, pretty short appearance of Albert Finney leaves quite a lasting impression.
Here's the thing - I see The Duellists as a breathtakingly beautiful film. Ridley Scott comes as a master of picture, that is to say - master of Caravaggio's calibre, just working with another medium. It does NOT tell a very pleasant story, do be warned. Feels gravely pessimistic at times, and being based on real story doesn't help (so the humankind is just like that, but do I want to be reminded this by cinema, coming home from day job of mine?) - all the more saving grace ending is.

So I watched Greyhound, I'm a sucker for that sort of thing and it pretty much delivers. It was as interesting decision to basically not show the Germans at all, other than taunting the allied ships over the radio. I think they were going for trying to show the 'wolfpack' as a character in itself, it wasn't bad but it made the film feel a bit thin in places.

Also re-watched House, I'd forgotten how insane that film is and it reminds me how much I miss practical effects being the norm.

That movie is incredible. There's a theater here in Baltimore that plays it every year around Halloween and it's always packed beyond capacity. I guess this year will be different though.

I love how the movie is essentially a transitional piece for a director going from doing TV commercials and soft-core porn to doing mainstream coming-of-age flicks. Throughout all the surreal imagery and bizarre montage, you can still clearly see the influence of both.

Obayashi actually just passed away in April of this year. The world lost a wonderfully different and creative force.

Charlie's Angels (2000 version): **

Not nearly the trainwreck that the recent 2019 remake is reputed to be, but a cheesy little action movie that couldn't be any more 2000 if it tried. Toward the end of the movie you can spot the exact moment that the producers decided to throw the Laws of Physics out the window and just use cartoon physics for the rest of the film. The writers of the film also managed to give the three Angels (portrayed by Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu) some of the most powerful plot armor in cinematic history. Not that it happened in the film, but I suspect the three of them could survive a nuclear blast without needing to hide in a refrigerator.

It unironically rips off the Matrix Bullet time special effect at one point, and features Bill Murray in the role of Bosley, giving a typical Bill Murray performance that falls somewhere between Phil Connors (Groundhog Day) and Bob Wylie (What About Bob?) which would be fine in most films but makes absolutely no sense for the role. Overall it might be worth it for a "so bad it's good" watch as long as you don't think too much about any of it.

Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle: **

More of the same, but with the ridiculousness cranked up to 11. I think even Wile E. Coyote would complain that the physics in this one seem a tad implausible. Unlike the first one, this one got seven Razzie nominations.

These movies are a guilty pleasure to me. Cameron Diaz was so hot at the time too.

Shoplifters / Manbiki Kazoku

This one took me forever to get around to. Unsurprisingly at this point, very good and worth a watch. Not sure if it surpasses Dare mo Shiranai but hard to argue that it's not in Koreeda's top tier.

Huge fan of his movies. Wonderful Life was one of those movies that shook me inside and made me realize what film can do as a medium.

Also liked Shoplifters (Edit: Actually, I meant the film "Nobody Knows" by the same director), but it's just so damn sad and heart-wrenching that I don't think I could watch it twice. (Shoplifters is great and I could watch it again.)

It has to be said, a pretty major weekly newspaper around here kicked up quite a fuss about this one, when it was new. That I think was pretty cool.

Peking Opera Blues (HKR release)
Ohh man, I forgot I'd ever seen this, but partway through I was like now I remember this. Glad to see that the time was taken not only to color balance this to the original colors but that he went and recreated the opening and ending texts by referencing the laserdisc release and fixed a couple of continuity errors. The comedy works well and the action is top notch. Not sure I'd call this Hark's best movie, but it certainly is up there with the likes of Once Upon A Time In China.

I'll have to check that out. I think I'm up to 5 now. The aforementioned 2 he knocked out of the park. Aside from those 1 was excellent (Umiyori Mada Fukaku / After the Storm), 1 wasn't bad but not that noteworthy (The Third Murder), and one I found quite meh (Umimachi Diary / Our Little Sister).

Personally, I feel like ワンダフルライフ is one of those creative works that transcends what it originally set out to be. Not to get too poetic about it, but I think sometimes it's a result of forces outside of the control of those involved. (the stars were aligned just right et al.)

I really like his other films, and he clearly has a defined art, but that one is different. 何とか、ちがうかんじ。

Like Terminator: Dark Fate, The Predator was actually good despite most of the internet assuring me it wasn't.

Also made time for Robocop 2014 which failed to capture the tone and point of the original but was still pretty interesting as it's own thing.

This had everything, somehow I'd never seen it before. Dracula, Van Helsing (Peter Cushing), decaying vampires, undead that bounce, half the cast are kung-fu masters.

Gretel & Hansel

It's basically The Witch: PG-13 version. I'm not sure if its heroine is less talented or just had less to work with, as the script often calls for her to pointedly NOT emote. Decent first act, draaaaaags once they get to the witch hut, and finally rushes through the climax.

The one thing it has over The Witch is... the witch. In the earlier film, any witchy women were mostly offscreen. Here, Alice Krige is the only substantial character Gretel interacts with - Hansel is a dunce - and is great at projecting a sinister aura. But she ultimately comes to such a lame end that splashing her with water would have been more epic.

I have so much to tell about Satanism and Witchcraft (La Sorcière) book by Jules Michelet that I don't even start (would drain way more juice out of me than it's really worth, I feel). At the very least, it's worth READING as a rageously anticlerical supplementation of The Golden Bough by sir James George Frazer, if you can dig XIXth Century's ways of reasoning as we can get to know them from books.* (It was not quite as long ago as the ongoing "acceleratrion of (life-)time" would have you believe; all that crisis of faith seems to bring forth is re-birth of faith, most lately in transhumanism, unless that's yestrday's news already.)

*) And strictly, exclusively from books. Surely, reading NEWSPAPERS from their time and age would enrich the picture greatly. Or visiting a handful of surviving cycloramas...

Apologies for digressing so in a thread not quite about books, but La Sorcière had been haunting me for so long that, still not feeling like writing a review it quite deserves, the above W-word was enough to trigger me like that.

By the way, there's a Japanese animated film (not quite "anime") based on the - generously fictionalised - first part of La Sorcière, titled Kanashimi no Belladonna/Belladonna of Sadness.
