Scarborough trip planned . . .any decent arcades ??

Post by kennyrh »

I'm taking a day trip to Scarborough at the end of the month and was wondering . . .

. . .does anybody who lives there or nearby know if there are any decent arcades there these days ??

It's a fair few years since I was there, and I don't wanna waste my time looking if there's bugger-all to find . . . :x

Absolutely none at all unless you like slots and grabber machines.

Good topic, I was wondering about the arcades in Scarborough.

I went to Southend recently and found a Brave Firefighters by Sega. I had only ever seen the game once before about 10 years ago, and regretted never playing it. I was well happy to finally play it. The game was a lot of fun and pretty unique (hose controller with adjustable nozzle!) and the visuals are still pretty impressive.

Other quality games we found:

Pac Man, Space Invaders and International Track and Field (the original coin-ops!)
OutRun 2 SP (the deluxe version with the sit-in cars)
Twin Hawk (a Namco 2d shoot-em-up where you sit inside a hydraulic cab and can move the on screen helicopter up and down)
The Time Crisis series and Crisis Zone
The House of the Dead series
Sega Touring Car

So which UK seaside resorts have arcades worth a look? Im still on the look out for Planet Harriers, id love to play this.

I haven't heard of a single 2D game (shooter or platformer) in a UK seaside arcade since 1994.
If you like the £1 for 4 minute thrill rides then you'll be ok.

Up until a couple of years ago we had a brilliant arcade in Whitley Bay, not far from Newcastle near where I live. It had the likes of Gradius, Strikers and even an old Space Invaders deluxe for . . .wait for it . . .10p a go. God, I miss that place.

There's still an old arcade in South Shields close to Sunderland, where I am, that has some old 1980s and early 90s games . . .but most of them are in shit order.

Blackpool used to be the Mecca, of course, but i understand that even there the slots have almost completely taken over. Last time i was there (quite a few years back) I was severely disappointed.

I was just thinking of Blackpool. I remember scouring the seafront for action games / shooters a couple years ago, could only find a lone Metal Slug (in a chip shop, no less). It's mostly racing / gimmick games and the odd Tekken 3 machine now, it seems.

I take it Skeggy went the same way?

I have fond recollections of the arcades in Hunstanton. Last time I went back, there was one arcade which had a 'retro' section of sorts, including The Simpsons 4 player, Track and Field, Operation Wolf, and best of all, Mortal Kombat 2 for 20p a credit. We had ourselves a nice little tournament, which I obviously won :D

Yeah . . .it's all very sad. London seems the only decent arcade trip now, mainly for The Troc because Casino don't seem to get much new these days. But then again, if you don't live nearby then the travelling expenses are becoming more and more prohibitive.

There's a Namco Centre W.I.P. at the Gateshead Metro Centre just a kick of the ass away from me . . .so I'm pinning my hopes on that.

(Although, I ain't holding my breath . . . . . :? )

News is that the Troc has been sold. How long it remains open as an arcade - I dunno?

Casino has been on a shooter go-slow this year, just Muchi Muchi Pork, Xexex and Tatsujin Oh have been installed. If you're into fighters though, Casino now has almost everything - KOF12, Blazbleu, SF4, Tekken 6 Bloodline Rebellion (no players card slot tho) & others.

Troc has Razing Storm.

Yeah . . .fighters have always been more popular than shmups - but i wouldn't mind a bash at Blazblue. The Gulity Gear games and spin-offs have always been my favourites.

I try to get down to London once-a-year and The Troc normally have a good turnover of new games . . .so I'll pin my hopes on them when i get down.

I hope that's not bad news about the Troc sell-off . . .although i have a nasty feeling it may be.

Hunstanton is not all that far from me and i’ve never been there, I will have to check it out! Im also interested in what the arcades in Scarborough are like.

I went down to Great Yarmouth sea front at the weekend, sadly all the old 2D classics have gone but they did have Raizing Storm which was a nice surprise!

Only since 1992 and SFII. Before that 2D shoot'em ups were the most popular type of game in and out of arcades.

That's a result with Raizing Storm (its a good game). I've mentioned this before, but I checked Great Yarmouth seafront 14 years ago and everything 2D had already gone.

I think there were a few years between shooters and fighters where brawlers were the king of the arcade. Games like Final Fight and Ninja Turtles were the shit in the late '80 and early '90s.

The arcade is still there and they've renamed it Vegas Gold. Beestorm is gone though. Nothing left in there. Las Vegas arcade in Soho now houses the Raiden III cab that was in the Troc.
We should have Deathsmiles Mega Black Label in Goodge/Casino arcade within the next couple of months.

Well . . .if the Death Smiles happens I'd plan my next London trip to coincide with THAT
Keep me posted.

I downloaded the 360 game video from the Jap site and it looks bloody amazing. Somebody burst my bubble, though . . .because, apparently, even if I modded my 360 you still can't play region-locked games.

Wotta bastard !!!!

Yeah that's why we're all ordering Jasper X360s from Japan.

The next time you're down Casino arcade, go round the corner and talk to the guys at Game Focus. You can order one through them.

^Its a Jap version of the X360 that is supposed to be more reliable than the others.
Game Focus should be getting some in within the next two weeks. I've put my name down.
Its about the only way I'll get to play some recent shooters.
Otomedius, DeathSmiles, Mush Futari etc.
