Bubble Symphony

Has anyone ever 1 credited this? The bosses are far too awkward.

Damn it. Why aren't there any forums where people are obsessed with 2D platform games.

I'd like to see some websites/forums on 2D platformers as well.

OT, how do you like the game as a whole?

I'd love to see something like shmups.com for 2D platform games and puzzle games. There is a decent amount of people on this board into those... if I were less lazy I'd consider starting my own site.

Not a great deal. I do give it a go now and again, its the bosses that really bug me. Seeing as people usually say this is the greatest in the genre I was wondering if there was anyone that is anygood at it or even plays it at all.

I'd show up! Shmups are like my 2nd or 3rd favorite genre. I much more prefer 2D platformers. Anyways, I've never gotten clsoe to 1-crediting it, unfortunately, but it's a very fun game.

I'll discuss on the game only if you post a new Rayforce score.

Just kidding, but i know a bit the game, i was pretty good at it back in the day (completed it a couple of times with a friend) where you want to start from :) ?

Edit: anyone knows where to snag a copy?MAME does a fine job, but i only lack this game to get all Taito Saturn stuff [/lame collector]

I gave this a go through with my little sister. I'm suprised she tolerated my "all-too-serious" attitude towards games. The music just doesn't do it for me like the original did...which is probably why I didn't like it quite as much....and the levels seemed a tad too easy (not if you're trying to 1CC it of course...).

Sorry for the delay.

I've tried to find some FAQs around but, so far, no luck (bubandbob.com seems to be down). At any case:the key for points and, i think for accessing the final stage are the keys. This means that you need to find the notes and get three of them.

At fixed stages (can't recall them all, surely 5 and 24, but i think at the 7th stage of a given world) you get the doors to the secret room. The first special item you get at the secret room is the magic sphere, which allows you to see where the notes are hidden.
This should last until the next special item, sadly. The second special item is based on the world you're in, and should trigger the guest star (same thing for the third one). The fourth one should be the little bell, which will ring every time you're near a note. Now, every three notes of the same colour, you will get an extra item: the key if you need to open the secret door (100k), a diamond if you've already obtained the key.

Now, in the lower part of the screen, you can see the key you've already obtained: you need all four of them to open the said door to the final stage, i don't know what happens if you don't get all four though.Another thing you can complete is the "Rod" bonus: if you get the three "rod" letters (encased in transparent bobbles) you change to your human appearance, the thing itself is worth some points (i think at least 100k), but dunno if it has consequences on other bonuses.I also don't know if you change into a dragon if you use the trick for starting as human.

Random points: as always, more enemies you destroy in one explosion=more points (i.e. from 3 enemies on, it's a power of 2, i.e. 2k for 3 enemies, 4k for 4 enemies, 8k for 5 enemies, etc). On some stages, you can get the traditional rain of fruits, there's the potion which gives you the collectable items, etc.

Bosses and worlds: uhm, this is the part i recall the less. I remember avoiding the worlds not based on other Taito games, especially central park (or the park,or whatever) and Japanesque. Bosses should be cheap, i.e. easy if you find a trick, nasty otherwise ( I remember Hyper-drunk being an idiot if you used a specific tecnique). Hope it helps.

P.S. anyone has a Saturn copy to spare?

If you prefer the original music and are playing on the Saturn, you can press ABABAB[right]C on the title demo to get "Bubble Bobble mode" (meaning black background and Bubble Bobble music). I don't remember if it's A, B, A, B, A, B and then right and C at the same time, or right first and C after, or if it should be done on player 1 or player 2 controller, though. You'll have to experiment a bit. I normally play that way, since I think the original music is a bit better.

Yeah collecting r,o,d is a neat little touch.

Some of the bosses seem impossible. It is a very hard game.

Does anyone not use Bubblun? The other characters are useless.

Its a shame they don't keep making Bubble Bobbles because they could be improved no end. Unlike Don Doko Don which is a truely awesome game. Aren't they going to release some old Taito games on a PS2 compilation? I bet they don't bother with DDD.

I get this game confused with Bubble Memories. This one came out first right?
If so then yeah, I like this game, but kind of suck at it. I like the Darius themed stage though.

The best game in this genre that I've played is probably Nightmare in the Dark on the Neo Geo.

Rando: In case you haven't looked around for it yet, there are 2 copies on eBay (both BIN), one for 53$ and the other for 66$...the seller only ships EMS though, which will run you an extra 15 bucks or so. Froogle revealed another copy on sale at Buy-Rite, but I know a lot of gamers don't like to buy from them...

Is this game the BEST on the genre?

I remember playing it in Raine, and while I liked it, I would hardly call it the best in the genre :) . And I LOVE the genre.

For me, Parasol Stars is still unbeatable :)

I'd actually say Rod Land is a bit more fun. the only port is it a port at all?) was to the Amiga. Anyone knows of any other port?

I'll second that Zimeon - played Rodland alot 10-15 years ago on the amiga, but I don't know if it's out for any other platform. Saturn-version would be awesome!

EDIT: apparently it's on NES(worst version), Amiga, C64, Spectrum, Atari ST and Amstrad CPC.

NES
GB
PSone (NES version on Jaleco Collection. Why not the arcade versions, idiots)

Which means the Amiga version probably was the best, then. Sad, it was a great game. Especially wonderful for 2 players. I'd certainly pay up for any good arcade port.

I played Rod-Land on that mullti game arcade machine. That game rocks! I have the GB version of Parasol Stars. No 2p, but it is a very well done port. They actually managed a good looking full screen on the GB without making the sprites too small. I like the GB b/w Bubble Bobble, but too little of the screen is showing. The GBA Bubble Bobble is much better.

I do love Rodland too. Maybe it would be my 2nd fav game on the genre :)

The Amiga version just rocks. I haven't played much of the arcade game to compare, but the Amiga version is one of the Amiga ports which is usually said to be BETTER than the arcade one (The other one being Silkworm).

I haven't played loads of it but Bubble Memories is probably the best Bubble Bobble game ever. Apart from the awful tackiolay photo backgrounds. It looks so shareware.
