After months of wanting the wife and I pulled the trigger on buying the Chilipad.

Pad goes on bed, tubing runs through pad, water runs through tubing. Temp unit (small cube thing) goes next to bed and oyu set the water temp between 55 - 110.

No more waking up cold. No more waking up a sweaty mess. I'm all about a proper nights rest - dark room, earplugs, no blue light prior to bed. This is the icing on the cake though.

Amazing.
My lord, I have come for you.

have been buying a lot less games, lately, but this thing finally made its way out of customs in a really worryingly smushed up shipping box (the box pictured is almost totally fine, though, and so are its contents).
glad to have it, but man, playing these on a ps4 controller just does not feel good Image

i deliberately went with this over the switch one because its d-pad (even on the pro controller) is even worse (and more uncomfortable on my thumb to use given its position on the controller). as packed as some of the switch and ps4 arcade/etc. compilations are with stuff i want to play, playing them on an lcd screen with a modern controller just doesn't keep me invested. i can play games designed for modern consoles (even retro-esque stuff like assault suit leynos) without much trouble with interface things like general responsiveness and control feel, but when i play retro ports i'm constantly left with it just feeling totally weird.

i guess, perhaps, it's more than just the controller. the input delay of playing on lcd, the visuals clearly being meant for different displays, the generally vastly different interface - i'm constantly guessing if everything is working right and the little bits of tiny offness add up to what feels like an almost dysphoric experience. i start questioning with the often purported authenticity of these ports if i'm just out of my damn mind in how wrong it feels or if maybe i just dislike the game, but the stink of that gaslighting wears off the second i flick the crt on and play anything else on there.

i hate to be one of those "just ain't the damn same" types, but it just ain't the damn same. i feel like i can't put my finger on it, but after this many years of intuition i feel it's more than curmudgeonly stubbornness that makes these things feel so wrong and unpleasant. the experience feels so off i'd rather just not play the games (since i can't get a board & cab to play them As God Intended). there's been some astonishingly good releases of older stuff on compilations the last year or two, but i think i'm done blowing money on these - and good lord is there money to blow with the sheer volume of them & their prices. maybe if avp or something else i'm desperate to play gets a release, but otherwise i'm pretty through.

at least this came with some cool posters & postcards

Love the 20-sided dices kitten!

I been playing D&D with friends since I was a teen(probably shouldn't be boasting about that...) so it warms my heart to see them shiny and colourful dices

interesting review of the comp too

Hahaha. That turned awesome. In all seriousness - if any of you are ever in this neck of the woods holler. Wouldn't be the first time I met up with a farm person in the city. There would be Retro games, beer, and green (if that's your thing):D

I try my best to emulate that arcade feel with a joystick
And that sure helps bring back the good old days :)

Sound conked out on the old TV, so I upgraded to a low input lag TCL R615 4k TV. Definitely delivers and Ant-Man and the Wasp looked incredible in 4k with HDR10. Pac-Man joystick is nice. Accurate ports with a 4 way microswitched joystick. Not good for Xevious and Bosconian, but it works great for the majority of the games on the stick.

Marshall Studio Classic... don't let the size fool you, this thing is a little monster! Easily the best "mini-head" I've ever played through, having full EL34s in the power section instead of EL84s makes all the difference. If you've ever wanted the classic JCM 800 tone but don't need to play stadiums, this little guy has you covered.

This dirt pedal is absolutely phenomenal. Holy shit...

Image

all sorts of old Marshall-y drives, from Plexi to JCM800-ish. From Van Halen to Slayer... and it even has some grind to it. yet super gainy and fluid. REALLY dynamic/responsive. It also filters out some of the loose low frequencies, like a Tubescreamer would(150Hz and below, or something like that? maybe it's lower or higher. I've heard 200Hz mentionned by engineers/producers before), so it's super tight for palm muting/chugging. yet still phat enough. Plugged into the old Traynor, this seriously fucking rips.

Speaking of which :

Image

Picked up a Traynor Mark 3 2x12 combo(not mine on pic, mine is at rehearsal space so can't take a pic now), made in 1975. A transformer the size of your head inside that monster... 4 vintage EL-34 tubes, including 1 Phillips/Mullard XF-3, and 3 old General Electric ones(which sound very close to the venerable XF-3), real creamy-sounding vintage tubes.
This my 4th or so Traynor I've owned. Can't beat the price for the iron you get with these... paid this one $500 CAD. Will go up against any old Marshall, and won't back down... I previously had Bassmaster models but this one I wanted because it's literally the best pedal platform I have ever heard. Clean, articulate and ballsy sound. It has so much bass that I have to turn both bass knobs to 0 (I bridge both the bassy and trebly channels together, like you would a Plexi). This thing is so ungodly loud, it's ridiculous! It'll blow your head clean off at volume of 4(it's 100W... so WAY overkill). Luckily I don't need to dime it since I use dirt pedals(it doesn't crunch anyway. it has SO much headroom, it's insane)

proudly Made in Canada. And so is the Revv (!)
Canadian-forged rig of the apocalypse, I will seriously be slaying demons with these forever-sharp and expertly made weapons

Wow, that thing is cool. Full tube saturation and amp running completely open, at non-head splittin' volume, is a beautiful thing, I'm sure that thing rips and is a joy to play. Can't go wrong with the cranked-JCM800 sound, it's one of my favourite sounds in metal, may even be my #1

Yes 20 watts is plenty enough for all live applications

Heh, "non-head splitting volume" won't be happening in 20 watt mode! It's got a 5 watt mode (which is saner, but still loud, and also isn't quite as ballsy-sounding as the 20 watt mode), but 20 watts with the master volume at around 7 or 8 (which seems to be the sweet spot), this thing is REALLY loud. Remember, cutting the wattage in half is -3 db, and while that's more than it sounds like (decibels are a logarithmic scale, -10 db = cutting the volume in half), it still means that a 20 watt amp is about 2/3rds as loud as a 100 watt amp! And, unlike a lot of "low-wattage" amps, this thing actually runs EL34s (not the smaller EL84), so it's not doing the thing where it has a less punchy bottom and less prominent upper-midrange harmonics that makes it sound quieter; it's really as loud as "2/3rds of a 100 watt amp".

Some random clips:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1JZQHq ... uLdC_AZgxk -- this was in 20 watt mode, standard tuning, and badly played. The Judas Priest riffs are straight-in, the Morbid Angel and Celtic Frost riffs were boosted with a TS-9. Yes, this was REALLY loud (MV was at 8 for the JP and MA riffs, 10 for the CF riffs).

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ts1rP ... Pucz1XsUDk -- 5 watt mode, downtuned, boosted. Probably should have had the mids higher, although it is a Marshall, so those knobs don't do a whole lot anyways, heh. MV at 8 again, but that's not as insane in 5 watt mode.

Also, sweet score on that Traynor! Such great amps, loud as hell and built like tanks. It's hard to tell from the picture, but does that have four inputs for input-jumpering shenanigans? Awesome if so. (EDIT: Read closer, you're already jumpering the channels. Good shit... although, I have to say, if it doesn't crunch, you might just not be trying hard enough  )

Winter project - the Fury can't come out in this weather, not with all the road salt everywhere. Inspired by kids on Youtube fixing salvage cars I bought a cheap one to have a go with, I've always liked these since they came out so it's a bit of fun and I'll probably use it when taking the Fury out as the roads are so poor and narrow there that I don't really like taking the Jaguar down there. It's a Fiat 500 875cc TwinAir, a crazy 2 cylinder engine that sounds like an angry lawnmower.

Image

Things that are definitely trashed: bonnet, bumper, condenser, headlamps, slam panel, bonnet release, crash bars.
Things that may be trashed: intercooler, radiator, cooling fan, turbo heatshield, turbo intake pipes, driving lights
Things that are definitely fixable: passenger wing (so minor it's a 5 minute job), driver wing (will need filler), passenger front rail

Of course I'll find out more as I dismantle the front end until all the broken bits are removed.

The number plate ends with 'DOH' - prophetic.

All cheap, the way I like my DVDs best. I am pleasantly surprised that Johnny Depp still gets to play a role which is not Jack Sparrow every now and then. Has that one been consuming him.

Yep. Heritage has been around since the 70s. It's easy to forget that video game collecting, outside of a few outliers has always been complete child's play compared to a lot of other fields.

And yeah, it's absurd.

I've just read the description of the game, makes a bit more sense now. only 10 copies of this version. I was on Ebay looking for Halo and you can pick up a copy for £5 ($7-$8)

Still frigging nuts though
