Looks like Guinness decided to fold. Not sure why, I guess we might never find out.

Also, comments and ratings disabled, lol.

Don't worry, there's plenty of jeering to be found here https://twitter.com/BillyPacman/status/ ... 5096551428

Sadly, while persons are frequently highly intelligent indeed, people are dumb as fucking shit. Here's a reaction to Sunset Riders getting an arcade-perfect home version, thirty years post-release:

Can't, I like people too much, which means pulled punches and cognitive dissonance. But as God and Jesus and Optimus Prime instructed, I also have to discern people. >_> So as a compromise, when I discern someone is the type I will most likely end up telling to choke to death on my fucking cock, I don't bother with them, a snap online. By process of elimination, I don't post on more than a handful of forums, and very rarely instruct people to asphyxiate on my rampant todger. Image Quality over quantity etc etc ;3

I'm going to need a full break down as to why the game is problematic in the GG thread.

I know it forces me often into a position cultural... centrism (for want of a better term) these days.
It's the assault on language that upsets me more than anything. I've heard genocide bandied about fuh realz on the 'gram when a genuinely intelligent friend just reposts en masse. No you silly goose, it's not a bloody genocide.

Anyway sozoz back on topic - why is Birry relevant today? I don't get it.

It's perplexing how sites don't seem to be keeping track of JP DK records (and trying to find them in a search only brought up US records). Some of these "world" records are a joke.

It keeps coming up again, so let's be clear. You don't need to be an expert, just trust this: There is no "allegedly" in whether he broke the TG rules. The recording was 100% definitely MAME. There is no way the screen would draw like it did on orignal hardware. To my knowledge bimmy still denies this, which really puts his character into question.

Whether he was "cheating" is questionable if you don't consider breaking above rules cheating on its own (TG has famously shitty rules anyway). There's a suspiciously high amount of 800-point blue barrels in his run, a number that's decided entirely by completely unpredictable RNG (aka great game design) - this suggests the usage of savestates to manipulate said RNG. There's no proof he did this, he could have just been unrealistically, extraordinarily lucky. In combination with the unreliable nature of everything else surrounding this, it's hard to imagine this wasn't the reason for using MAME and subsequently covering up.

The funniest thing about this is how completely irrelevant it is.
Can he beat that score legitimately nowadays? Yes he can. Does the score even matter in the grand scheme of things? No, it's not even remotely competitive compared to how actually talented players are 0wning Donkey Kong now. Did Billy Mitchell even hold the world record for Donkey Kong when the King of Kong "documentary" was filmed? No, he did not. He just got the focus of the movie because he's an infinitely more entertaining character than Tim Sczerby.

Robbie Lakeman just took back the world record no less than 4 days ago, and that's a lot more interesting.

JP DK suuuuuurcks for competitive play. It's a shorter game, so that's a huge point in its favor, but it's the only point in its favor. Donkey Kong scoring is all about the barrel stages, and if I'm not mistaking the game-breaking ladder bug was never fixed Japanese ROMs?
Check out the actual DK WR runs (ie. not bimmy mitchell nonsense) and call them a joke again. The game itself has its issues, but the amount of skill put into getting every available point out of it is incredibly impressive. I think you'd agree.

Right, but the scene wasn't as knowledgeable about the game back then as it is now. Breaking a mill was the holy grail at the time, probably the most important event in the game's history past the fame+profitability phase, and a huge part of this shitlord's claim to fame is from stealing credit for someone else's accomplishment. Something he never managed himself until better score strategy was known.

It's very important to me that the ghost aliens who'll be rummaging through our ruins in the future know that Billy is a big fat phony.

In its defense, the current competitive scene definitely wouldn't exist without that movie.
Not that Donkey Kong wasn't an incredibly famous game already, but interest in actually playing it definitely skyrocketed in its wake. I know people who are now entirely dedicated to original arcade games entirely based on starting there.

AFAIK, the ladder bug was only in the "How high can you try?" romset. I meant it was a joke how Twin Galaxies and Guiness' video game records call themselves world records, but mostly pay attention to western ones, not that the western records are a joke. There's no denying the skill involved to get a high DK score, especially after watching King of Kong.

The fact he’s still spinning this line is absolutely crazy. He’s so smug about it as well... Yeah let’s just ignore hard evidence. Idiot.

Does anybody here honestly even enjoy playing Donkey Kong?

I had plenty of chances to get a PCB. I never got one. I wouldn't even rank Donkey Kong in my top 100 favorite cabs of all time. Back in the day, PCBs were cheap. I passed it up because it wasn't worth any amount of my money.

If we're going back to the days of grammar lessons, give me Defender or Robotron, please.

So, congrats to Barry. You rule a kingdom of meh.

Donkey Kong is a museum piece and a stepping stone to better games. I enjoy DK in theory and as part of the story of games: Just like Pong. I have equal desire to play both games. It's a great story. It's a boring game.

Super Mario Bros and Metroid are the real birth of Nintendo--two games that reflected two different unique points of view from the dev teams. Those games matter and they are still fun to play (despite feeling dated).

Donkey Kong kinda sucks. The way people care mystifies me.

I'm sure thousands have said the same thing about every single game listed in the High Scores forum.

Ah, I think I'm going to be a bit ooc here with an over abundance of positivity:

There's a lot to like about Donkey Kong. The single screen stages have a simple elegance to them. Vertical and horizontal space has a lot more value than it does in most later platformers, which have huge empty areas in them. Dying during a fall helps contribute to that.

But it does suffer from an absolute dearth of variance.

Only four stages, in a specific order. And that strength I mentioned earlier, about space being filled, is a detriment with the order they chose to present them in. In plain english: You spend like 3 minutes trying to beat the first stage. After beating the second stage, you get to re-play the first stage all over again. For another 3 minutes. At ~10 minutes, a length of time that's close to what you'd start to want an arcade to end at, you feel like you've gone nowhere. I would assume the vast majority of players who have beaten stage 2 have never seen more than those two screens.

Variance is crucial to avoiding burnout. I always talk about how great the level select system in Super Mario Brothers is for mixing up playthroughs, and what a graveyard of time and dreams that blue shaft in Metroid is.

Where they decided to go with the series in Donkey Kong GB and Mario vs Donkey Kong... well.... Bugs Bunny's Birthday Blowout/Krusty's Fun House aren't my kind of thing.

The lack of variance issue can be applied to nearly any Golden Age-era arcade game (hell, many if not most of the home games too). The appeal to me has always been the challenge, and DK gets challenging pretty quickly.
