SHANTHRAX TO THE MAX has 6425 friends.
Immediate lose.

I'm actually proud to personally know all but 3 of the users on my friends list. Voodoo Music Festival because i'm going there this year, my Australian junkie friend who posts hilariously disturbing things and Ballard Jiu Jitsu.

I'd probably put it in'r too though.

Somehow all the relevant discussion on "complex, artistic games" moved here. The serious discussion pretty much ended in the fourth post when Never_Scurred hit the nail on the head that the children who made this video were nothing but a pinch of molecules twinkling in mamaw's nutsack when any of this stuff happened, and unlike other young people like me, never attempted to understand it. You can't get too mad when the whole thing plays out like a bad G4 audition tape, the subject matter could've very well been how bullet-time killed the traditional shooter.

Ha, so she actually read this thread? That's very cool.

I honestly would love to understand what the heck those people had in mind when they did that video.

Someone could ask her how much she was paid to do it. Everything was obviously scripted, and I am pretty sure people had no idea of what the heck they were talking about.

Maybe the ignorant people in this video represent the true majority of so-called 'gamers' nowadays??

Guy4:
So we grew up and the games grew up but the arcades
they couldn’t grow up and change for us, so they died. But they died so we
could have oblivion and world of war craft and really complex artistic games like
that.
Maybe this is true gaming!

You know, guys, we've all had our harty lawls at their expense (the image edits were quite good), however, apart from some mention of the years being wrong on certain games, nothing has really been said specifically about how/why they were wrong.

Somewhere in the middle of page four is a link to the transcript... maybe it's about time we started taking it apart piece by piece.

I mean, how is WoW that much different from Quest of D?

or any other fantasy/medevil style MMO?
its popular but does it make it better than any of the others?

IMO no. It is a good game one of the better MMOs but far from the best

they are also so wrong about the megadrive versions of the games being as good as. the megadrive was far from arcade perfect.

in all honesty the arcade industry is a shadow of its former self in the west. But where the americans produced cone after clone of Mortal kombat and anything else. Japan got creative with Dedicated machines and photo booth sticker machines linked machines for fighting and racing (lag free may I add) prodcing a unique exprience that cant be found at home.

I hate playing halo 2 online becuase of anoying poeple screaming down the mic how they got one kill on me if it was in the arcade i seriousley doubt any one would scream in my face IN YOUR FACE NOOOOOOB OOOOH I WHUPED YOUR ASS SO BAD AND R%£D YOUR MOTHER etc etc. if they did i dount they would get many rematches and still now many of the great games fail to get a home port. because the hardware is to great, they want to keep it exclusive to the arcades or its just too dedicated.

Lots of girls round the arcades by my house (southport, liverpool, UK its a sea sidetown) Play the dance machines despite being able to pay them on there flimsy mats at home. because its the atmosphere.

Would sega of made the Super DX hydrolics monster that is the big ass outrun 2 cab
Image this was taken at the trafford center in manchester england and it was a sunday the whole time i was there I did not see the machine not being used once despite its 2GBP a go or 4GBP for the two player mode.

only a few months back they had ghost squad
Image
must of been making money for them to warrent placing the new upgrade of it

My point being that they aren't reeally that different and Quest of D happens to be arcade-only. Which completely negates Guy #4's statement.

I was about to mention this myself. The Mega Drive and PC-Engine weren't arcade-perfect... they were merely closer facsimiles to the arcade than what the Famicon and Mark III were capable of producing.

When it comes to fighting games especially, most of the truly competitive players I've spoken with just don't care for on-line match play (it's a fun diversion or decent practice at best). Of course, lag is a great issue, but there's a whole host of other reasons as well. Competitions like SBO and EVO prove that there's still a solid following and preference for "on-location" combat.

In a word, No.

There were 3 earlier posts pointing out their errors with actual substantial content. The rest of this thread has broken down into 3 types of responses:

1. LOL at these people who don't know shit about arcades!
2. Here's my contribution to the Shmups equivalent of an SA Photoshop Friday thread.
3. I want to bang the chick with red hair.

The video implies that arcade-style games are shallow experience and gamers eventually gained a certain level of sophistication (due to home consoles) and "evolved" beyond them, coming to expect more depth to their games. This thread has been about pissing all over that premise and having a little fun on the side. You can only give a brain-dead premise so many intelligent responses.

And there you have it. Arcade operators can only afford these kind of games for so long, and those who can't get alienated and stuck with older or less attractive kind of games. It's not that arcades are dead, but they are pretty much suffocating under their own weight.

The Arcade generation = Social people with lives. People who went to the cinema to watch a movie, people could get by without computers in their lives.

This generation = Anti social people whose lives is the GAME, whilst downloading 10 movies at once on their 250GB HD and depend on technology to have a social outlet in life.

I might be wrong on some of that for some of you, but having experienced both ends of this argument I would say the 90's had the right balance of both worlds. We are now treading dangerously towards padded walled rooms with laptops in them.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

How many points did they make?

-Genesis was the death of the arcade (wrong)
-Genesis games looked the same as the arcade (also wrong)
-The point of arcade games is gone when you can play it at home and credit feed (need I explain?)
-WOW is artistic (hope I don't have to explain)
-Gamers grew up

Dig around this thread, and someone has defunked all of those with at least something semi-intelligent. They had their facts right in the first 2 minutes, then it went downhill. You're just being blinded by the Photoshop Festival.
