Horeh shiet, this Opie & Anthony interview with the late Patrick Kennedy (detective who worked the Jeffrey Dahmer case) is great. A superbly listenable, observant reteller of some truly hellacious shit. He died of a heart attack not long after this short interview. Adios and thanks sir. ;-;7 Obviously a bit macabre and not safe for little children!

This is too funny  Middle-Age book (1430)about combat techniques has a page that suggest that "to end thine enemy rightly", you should... start unscrewing the pommel of your sword mid-fight and throw it at him

We might be looking at the oldest recorded shitpost ever folks

I suspect medieval folks had a better sense of humor than we sometimes give them credit for. It was not all solemn religious ideas and deference to landed lords. I recall reading some pretty bawdy and silly jokes in old English etc. in college.

I do to. I've always believed that people then were socially just like people now. Most people tend to think that "oh we're so liberated now, back then they were stuck up". But a lot of evidence points that this is false. Joke manuscripts, as you've said, but recorded evidence of extremely lewd and vulgar graffity, despotism and tales of orgiac meetings and thriving sex life and constant focus on sex. So it's just like today, we got nothing on them

Also, it kinda feels nice to connect with a 600 year old memer  it's different than just readiing about that time period, it's more like interacting with it. Pretty cool bond!

You've got a dope username btw *thumb's up*

Henry Rollins is a very fascinating guy. By his background but also because of his humour, how well-spoken he is and also for his musical tastes revolving around diy culture and easily appraochable musiciens, mainly punk rock, an for his immense passion of music and vinyl collecting.

That mini-doc series on YT features plenty of clips of Rollins talking about collecting record, punk rock and all that good stuff. Check it out. Here's one for a start :

Henry Rollins: How I Got Into Punk Rock

An amazing doc I watched last month and forgot to share (and got reminded of it by Sumez's Gary Numan post) is the BBC joint Synth Britannia. I'm guessing most people interested in post punk/new wave/synth pop/early industrial know about it already. It is a crucial watch IMO. I'm pretty knowledgeable when it comes to those genres but I still learned a bunch of stuff. There's a lot of artists I already knew well about, such as : Kraftwerk, Einstürzende Neubauten, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, Suicide, Gary Numan, Joy Division/New Order, Ultravox, Human League, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode.

But thanks to this doc I discovered OMD and The Normal, two crucial early acts in this revolution of bands who ditched guitars completely and went all synth, right as synths became smaller and more affordable (some of those bands even bought boards and components and made their own synth!) and pushed by the punk ethos to just damn it all and get up on stage to play. Also learned more about Mute records, owned by The Normal's Daniel Miller, and it's major role in this revolution. And the bit about the soundtrack of A Clockwork Orange probably influencing this scene was neat too, I had never thought about it but some pieces in that movie are synth only, which is truly trailblazing for 1971, so it does make sense. The film depicts a violent, concrete-jungle England too so it its the right mindset as well.

It blows my mind how ahead of it's time The Normal's Single/EP was. Completely sick!
The dissonant 2-step of Warm Leatherette is completely nuts for 1978, and the lyrics are classic too. Based on J. G. Ballard's novel Crash and it's theme of car-crash-followed-by-sex fetish. Really catched lightning in a bottle there.

"A tear of petrol,
Is in your eye,
The hand brake,
Penetrates your thigh

Quick,
let's make love,
Before we die.

On warm. Leatherette.
Warm. Leatherette."

The other song, T.V.O.D. is great as well. Also has cool lyrics.

"I don't need a
TV screen,
I just stick the aerial
Into my skin"

An incredible documentary by Kim Justice (yet again) on Sega's Last Bronx. On how it was a success in Japan, how it failed in the rest of the world, and how the death of Lady Di prevented Sega from publishing photos of models cosplaying as Last Bronx characters while showing off their bare tits in the pages 3 of various english newspapers (!).

Interesting one. I guess the footage he used of the game is from the PS2 release? Those models and textures look way too nice to be from the Saturn release.

Arcade.

And the Saturn port is actually shown a couple of times (that one has round shadows under characters)

The dialog feels a bit over-thought, but I like Otaking77077's take on R-type's first level:

Awesome review of both games. We need more quality videos like this one.

(skip to 1:30 this is where it gets nasty)

Scary eh? the largest ones can probably kill someone instantly. Imagine you're outside that very moment, the nearest shelter is only a quick dash away, but you will probably not make it...

And that is why I only go outside for booze! Ice is some evil shit.

Risk of deadly injury aside, that sounds like such an utter pain in the ass to deal with.

Not that your house offers anything but a comforting illusion of safety where the hammer of the gods is concerned. Image

History of Portugal, narrated in English (with subs) and some humorous imagery. Goes up to 1910 as of this post, when the monarchic system fell and was replaced by a republic.

high level race. Red car is the fastest but spents most fuel.

Also Sd2snes cartridge with the remix music.

Always brings a tear in my eye. Shame that only the French and her own people gave her the appreciation she deserved.

Today I want to highlight a beautiful and weird work of art : the animated TV bumpers that canadian cartoon network Teletoon used in 1997 and 1998.

they were all weird and wonderful. They would change during the day, there was 4 phases(morning, afternoon, evening and night) represented by 4 planets, and each had a different artstyle (claymation, 2D animation, stopmotion using cut-up photographs, and papier-mâché), that really gave a sense of progression to the programming and kept things interesting. Even the more light-earthed phases had a weird, eerie vibe in some way. It just made you completely immerse in this crazy (and strange and unsettling)universe. It is the epitome of cool. Here's a compilation of the bumpers someone upscaled and posted on here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPz7CdGnjFM The nitty gritty is the night phase stuff, which you can find at 3:07. But I highly suggest watching from the beggining.

Bumping this old thread to share this almost 2-hour long documentary about God games. Very in-depth, goes all the way back from Populous and Dungeon Keeper to the indies of today. Very much worth a watch even if you're not interested in the genre.

Not sure if anyone has seen this one before, but seems to have been buried in the deepest recesses of Youtube for 10 years. Felt it was more appropriate to post it here than in main shmups chat.

It's been referenced here for quite some years now. Quality is sadly poor now, but it's still worth watching for sure.
