New user here; longtime lurker, first time poster, etc.... As far as my bio is concerned:

Name: Chris

DOB: 12/29/1978

Height: 6'2"

Weight: 180 lbs

First Shmup Played: Centipede or Galaga, can't remember which...

First Shmup Owned: Truxton (Sega Genesis) 1989

Favorite Shmup: Mars Matrix, hands down

Favorite Non-Shmups: Most 2-D fighters, Contra, Metal Slug...Final Fantasy III (US), VII, and VIII, Phantasy Star II and IV, Diablo II

Systems Owned: NES, Dreamcast, Genesis, Gamecube, Neo Geo MVS, PC

Systems Wanted: Turbo Duo (for shmups), Saturn (for Panzer
Dragoon Saga, never played it), and Xbox (for emus).

I'm a total shmup newbie, having only re-discovered the genre about a year ago thanks to MAME 32 and, more specifically, Mars Matrix. However, I have always been a 2-d fan; having grown up during the resurrection of video games (mid to late 80's through 90's for you younger gamers). Although I like the current generation games, nothing compares to the old 8- and 16-bit days.

Hilary Duff or Lindsay Lohan: Hilary Duff, no question about it =)

I bought Gradius 2 MSX, but it'll be a long time before it'll reach here from Japan. I'm really looking forward to it. My X68000 won't play Nemesis 90 because it doesn't have enough RAM, but I'm in the process of hunting down an extra megabyte. The game itself is almost as expensive as the system, too. This one here on Yahoo Auctions Japan is going for 120 bucks!

Wow, a PDP-11. I have a HP-2114B, mfd. November 1969, complete with 16K of core memory (that's 16 Kwords, not Kbytes...16-bit words, not eight), hand-wired backplane etc. What a beast. It's quite good at counting in binary from the front panel, goes through lightbulbs like crazy. It draws a cool 8 amps when I turn it on, and all of the lights in the house dim for a couple secs.

Ooh, I'd love a computer that old with core memory and whatnot. My PDP-11 is one of the later ones, from the late 70's. It's all solid state with microchips and whatnot. On the plus side, I can run it without three phase power or causing brownouts :)

I used to have a DECmate I and a Rainbow 100, but they've been lost in the mists of time. What specific model of 11 do you have?

I guess technically I have four PDP-11s. One is a microPDP-11/73. It's in a third party rackmount case with a Q-BUS. It's the beige box in the far lower right corner of this picture...

Image

It used to have a massive 8 inch 40 megabyte SMD hard drive, but I replaced it with an ESDI controller. It's also got a TK50 tape drive. I've got an PERTEC tape drive controller too for a big 9 track deal, but the drive itself stopped working.

The other three are DEC Professionals. Two 350's and one 380. I think the 380 has an LSI-11/73 CPU, I forget what's in the 350. They basically look the same as the DECmate and Rainbow. I think I built one working machine between the three of them, but then took some parts out for my MicroVAX II. One of these days I have to put the thing back togeather.

That's friggin awesome. Your basement (?) looks very much like my brother's bedroom. All of my 'big iron' is currently in his custody due to storage reasons, but I found a pic of a 2114 exactly like mine (the CPU in the lower left)...

It's virtually impossible to find anything for pre-HP3000 minis these days. I spent years trying to track down some peripherals for it, but with little luck. A few years back I came across a HP rack-mounted digital multimeter that is listed as a 2100-series peripheral, but it didn't come with any sort of I/O board so it's basically a paperweight. That thing has a vacuum tube numeric display!

Ah, I love Nixie tubes. Actually, I have an HP power meter with Nixie tubes. An HP 432B, but I don't know if it's compatible with 2100 series stuff. I've got quite a few HP computers, but none are that old. In the middle rack in that picture is an HP 3000 (fairly new PA-RISC based one), and above it (out of picture) is an HP 9000/300 (68030 based). I've also got an HP Apollo 700 somewhere, too.

Is your brother a virgin by chance?
The white clouds floating on the great blue sky
And the boiling red blood shed in fierce gaming

Their battered bodies will never forget!

Random Shit: I am currently cowering underneath a mountain of debt. Am moody, short-tempered and hard to live with. Can get completely hyperactive during the summer months. And I drink far too much, which is not big or clever as several have my family have died as a direct result of alcohol. I got caught stealing Lego from Asda/Wal-Mart when I was 13.
