Oh, believe me, I love that book to death, but it's by no means my favorite.

A useless tidbit: I have the autographed 'Fight Club' book from Chuck Palahniuk himself.

Name: kev (see if you can work out where i got my forum name from  )
Arcade Initials: ICE (yeah, I'm cool :P)
Last used them: Summer before last, after a session on Silent Scope, one handed without using the scope. Go me :)
Age: 22
Location: England
Occupation: Student (Computer Studies)
Status: Single... since last weekend...
Interests: Video games, films, music, books, martial arts (jiu jitsu, wushu), food, history, foreign places, coming up with money making schemes which fail for any number of reasons, cars, various sports (watching, or playing in a non-serious manner), probably some other crap too.

First shmup played: er, depends how anal your definition of shmup is. If Space Invaders counts, there you go. Or, at least, some PC shareware clone of it. If not, then Silpheed (and NO not the Mega CD version, the ACTUAL original Silpheed, well, a PC port of it at least).
Favourite shmups: Silpheed (aforementioned version), Giga Wing, Donpachi, Ikaruga, Gradius V, Psyvariar, Defender.
First shmup 1CC: Super Aleste
Last shmup 1CC: Super Aleste

Other favourite games/series: Virtua Fighter, Street Fighter, Grandia, Rez, Ring of Red, DDR, Ico, Gunstar Heroes, Metal Slug, old school Sierra and Lucasarts stuff, Zeliard, Ridge Racer Type 4, One Piece Mansion, Powerstone, Daytona USA, Sega Rally, Time Crisis, Sensible Soccer, Wipeout, Fear Effect, Shenmue, Harvest Moon, F-Zero, Mario, Sonic, Doom, Half Life, Civilisation, Starcraft, Fantavision, GTA, Metal Gear Solid, Zelda probably lots more I haven't mentioned.

Game systems owned: PC, PS2, GC, DC, Megadrive, SNES (but I broke it...), NES (trying to fix it), N64, Master System II, PS1, GBA, BBC Micro (trying to fix it), Atari ST (trying to get wires for it), ZX Spectrum.
Other interesting stuff: Metal DDR mat, DC arcade stick.

Favourite Books: War & Peace, Catch 22, Crime & Punishment, Battle Royale (the novel, although what I've read of the manga is pretty cool too), Norwegian Wood, Dance Dance Dance, Wind-up Bird Chronicle (those three are what I've read of Murakami's books so far, a few more lined up when I have time...), Gorky Park, Catalyst, Game Over (the Nintendo one), probably Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, but I need to read it again to make sure, haven't read it for years, Dune trilogy.

Currently Reading: Nicholas & Alexandra

Favourite Films: Swallowtail Butterfly, Amelie, Hard Boiled, City on Fire, Drunken Master, Kill Bill vol 1, Fight Club, Scarface, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Stalingrad, Perfect Blue, American Beauty, A Better Tomorrow, Legend of Fong Sai Yuk, Once Upon a Time in China, My Sassy Girl, Battle Royale, Delicatessen, All About Lily Chou Chou, Godfather, Star Wars, Desperado, Pulp Fiction, Terminator, Rambo, loads more stuff I will have forgotten :)

Favourite music: Trance, psytrance, happy hardcore, post rock, classical, indie, rock, metal, hip-hop (good stuff, not the fucking shit filling up the radio all day), house, decent pop when it manages to appear, foreign stuff with catchy tunes (stuff that would probably be ruined by dire lyrics if it was in English, but hey, I can't understand what the hell they're saying, so it sounds good to me!). Er, anything good, really.

Favourite foods: Chicken Kiev, steak, hamburgers, home made french fries, lobster, all sorts of curries, garlic chicken, pasta, lasagne, roast lamb, various chinese and mexican things, loads of fruits and a fair few veg, depending on what is done with them. Generally just freshly cooked food (none of this microwave meal shit) that tastes nice and I can cook, I guess. Would like to try sushi, but from what I hear, the stuff they sell in supermarkets here is shit, and the stuff they sell outside supermarkets is bloody expensive and usually in London. And Tar-Palantir - I know exactly where you're coming from with the onion samosas... mmmm :)

Favourite drinks: Tea (I'm English, what the hell do you expect?), water, vodka, wine, sangria, most fruit juices. Pepsi is nice, but I don't really drink it anymore. Rootbeer is lovely, but hard to get over here.

Favourite football team: Tottenham Hotspur

Places I most want to visit: Russia, Japan, Czech Republic, Spain (went a few years ago, but just to a touristy part where I swear literally EVERYONE in Europe goes at some point, want to see the rest!), China, Ireland (feels silly that it's so close, half my family was originally from there, and it's so cheap to fly there, its supposed to be really nice, but I've never been. Well one day I'll go), Sweden (other half of family originally from here, many years back. They're in America now, it's great there, but I've been there plenty of times already! Still, will go back at some point...)

Favourite TV shows: hardly watch any TV nowadays, but Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy, Futurama, Sopranos. And of course old stuff like The A-Team and Knight Rider!

Time spent writing this: Too long :D

edit: oh yeah, and Lindsay Lohan EVERY SINGLE TIME. as if there's even a debate!

Hhhm. Well, I started as Full Gospel. But since the denominations have gotten into some conflicts in the past, a lot of people are pretty much non-denominational like myself. Correct me if I'm wrong, but pretty much the only "hardcore" christian church right now are the Southern Baptists.

Yeah, I'm not Unitarian either, BTW. My church is Evangelical Presbyterian. It's just like, as I said, the term "Christian" is too loaded and has become to common (in the sense of being watered-down) in the USA, for me at least.

Age: 35

Occupation: Underemployed Interactive Designer / Retail Monkey

Interests: HDTV (I prefer 1080i over 720p), Movies in Widescreen (16:9 over 2.35:1) Cars (Japanese over American), Music (all except country) Games (gameplay over grafix) Sports (watching the Steelers fall apart in the playoffs and watching a sub-par baseball team play in nice park)

Disinterests: This whole carb craze, come on people. Gas guzzling SUVs, they are cool, but not my bag man.

Bands: My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Stone Roses, Charlatans UK, 3RD Bass, Eric B. and Rakim, KRS One, NWA, Ice Cube, De La Soul, Beck, Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd, Hendrix, Hovercraft, Love and Rockets, Pixies, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Raidiohead, Kula Shaker, White Stripes, Beasite Boys, Lush, Mouse on Mars, Labradford, Curve, Joy Division, Smiths, Morrissey, Incubus, Jane's Addiction, Audioslave

Movies: Being John Malcovich, Big Fish, A Christmas Story, Austin Powers Trillogy, The Empire Strikes Back, Indiana Jones, James Bond (Connery and Moore only), Apocalypse Now, Citizen Kane, Goodfellas, Scarface, Pulp Fiction, Taxi Driver

First Console Owned: Atari VCS aka 2600

First kick-ass Console Owned: Coleco Vision

First love: Pac-Man and the 9th Key Pattern

First shooter: Space Invaders

Systems currently owned: Atari 2600 with original box, Atari 5200, a non-working Coleco Vision, NES refurbished with new 72 pin connector, NES top loader, Genesis 2 with box, Genesis 3 with box, SNES, SNES 2 mini version with box, Playstation with box, PSone with LCD, PS2 with box, N64 with box, Xbox with box (funny sounding), Dreamcast, Gamecube with box

Consoles I've gotten at launch Saturn (I later sold it), N64, PS2

Consoles that fall into the "what was I thinking category?": Sega CD -some people here love it and I respect that, but all I remember is a version of Sonic with cool cartoons and Sewer Shark. The 3DO Interactive Multiplayer, I paid like $400 for it and all I got were cooler at the time versions of Road Rash and Madden. SNES, god why was I such a Genesis fanboy back then? I didn't pick it up until the later part of the 90s. I wish I would have gotten it in it's heyday.

Favorite shooter of all time: Gradius

Current favorite: Raiden

Favorite old school game: Robotron

Favorite mainstream game: Mario Kart Series

Favorite RPG: Final Fantasy 7

Favorite college pastime: Getting all smoked out and playing SNES Star Fox

Favorite current pastime: Getting all coffeed up and playing PS1 era games

Favorite borderliners: Rez and Panzer Dragoon Orta

Saddest gaming moment: Arcades... rest in peace. Dave and Busters is cool, but it's just not the same.

Gaming goals before I die: Teach my future childern to appreciate great games and 2D not just eye candy, play Radiant Silvergun, finish all those Zeldas I got stuck on, finish Super Mario Sunshine, get those last 3 stars on Mario 64, and to have boxed versions of every N64 Funtastic Color series console including the DK64 green one. EDIT: and to also someday visit Japan with a ton of money and buy all kinds of cool gaming shit and visit the arcades.

Name - RoushiMSX (Sorry :( )
Location - Oklahoma, USA
Age - 25
Hobbies - Running, Weight Lifting, Playing Games (just about everything except for console first person shooters and PC Real Time Strategy games), hanging out with my wife.
Initials For Score Entry - ROU (if I get the spot right under ROU, I put in SHI)

First Shmup Played - Been playing since Space Invaders & Defender; I damn near grew up in arcades
Favorite Shmups - Dodonpachi, Guwange, Raiden Fighters 2, Galaga/Galaga 88, Shienryu
First Shmup owned - Defender (Atari 2600, baby)
Favorite Shmup Character - I tend to pick whatever character other people don't play just to be an ass (see also: I used to play a mean Zangief in SF2 and a badass Ganryu in Tekken 2)
Favorite Shmup Bomb - No idea
Shmup Most Wished to Play - Ketsui. Dodonpachi on training wheels with helicoptors? Yes, please.

Favorite Food - My wife's fried rice.
Favorite Drink - Coca Cola
Favorite TV Shows - Don't watch much tv, but we're working our way through the Friends season box sets and it's safe to say that we're both heavilly addicted. Also watching Yakikate Japan as the episodes come out, and Hikaru no Go had us pretty addicted for the entire run. When she's asleep, I like to watch Batman: The Animated Series, but I think that's just because I'm flat out gay for good DC stuff from the era before they flat out sucked.

Favorite Movies - Seven Samurai, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, The Great Escape, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Bladerunner Director's Cut
Favorite Music - No preference; I love the evolution of KMFDM's industrial sound, but I equally love baroque-era classical music (Handel and Bach rock my world) and a variety of other musical styles, including hip hop / rap / r&b....which people find odd since I'm also a Tom Jones fan (saw him in concert nearly 10 years ago...in all seriousness the concert was as good of a spectacle as any of Gwar's shows)
Favorite Singer - Au Haruthai (hip shot on that one; i just love her voice. She looks like a man, but she can sing pretty damn well)
Hilary Duff or Lindsay Lohan - My favorite sock while downloading photoshops of either one.
Preferred Shmup Character's Attributes - Doesn't matter as long as it's the least selected ship. It's fun playing with the ships that no one else wants to use.

Name: James
Age: 31
Location: UK
Occupation: Systems Administrator
Religion: Rejected.
Hobbies: Games. Online games. Offline games. Retro games. Pinball (restored around 14 pinball machines), arcade stuff (had 20 cabs in the past), radio control cars, relentlessly hoarding cuddly frogs which is probably some childhood trauma thing. Cars. I try to avoid computer related stuff at home.

First shmup: Galaxian
Favourite shmup: Dragon Breed (and a hard decision)
First game: Star Wars
Favourite game: Midnight Club 2 (note: online, offline was 'ok')
Favourite film: Rollerball (the 70s one, not the new abomination)
Other good films: THX 1138, Silent Running, The Untouchables, Platoon, The Black Hole, Natural Born Killers, A Better Tomorrow, Dawn Of The Dead (original), Sleepless In Seattle, Master And Commander, Blade Runner (and so it goes on....)
Favourite band: The Cure
Other good bands: Depeche Mode, NIN, Mesh, Sisters Of Mercy, Muse, Genesis (pre-80s-drivel), Alan Parsons Project, Madonna, Apoptygma Berzerk, Nirvana, Sopor Aeturnus, The Smiths, Dreadful Shadows and again the list is huge.

Random stuff: Been playing games since I was old enough to reach the cab buttons, and even before then played Pong on a TV game system. Have hoarded/collected/played games of all types on pretty much every system except oddly the Dreamcast, currently addicted heavily to online gaming and clan antics in Rainbow Six. Ran a goth club for a few years in my mid 20s, lots of fun, did one of the DJ slots and still have a pretty large CD collection to show for it. Another addiction is cars, I've had too many, just got a BMW 540 now and a 1971 Trans Am for the weekend. Yet another addiction is women, 3 failed engagements so far, which has to be some kind of worthless unfortunate record. As I sit here typing this, I'm playing DDPDOJ while also dismantling a vintage RC car for repair. It's late, but work is so tedious right now that I booked a week off to save myself from suicide. Vices? Plenty- get me a hot goth princess in a nurse outfit, a bottle of rum, some coke, a dialled pizza hut and we're about there. No cigarette afterwards - not my thing, but there is Xbox Live.

Final comment: I don't suffer fools gladly. Stupidity, stupid people, and technical deficients giving advice annoy me. I don't have time for it, and I'll call people on it in an instant. I expect to be treated the same. I can be found lurking frequently in the Forest of the Jaded Bastards (IRC).
