Sega Genesis Collection is out today
A very quiet release, if I'm not mistaken; my copy's in the mail. Anybody played it yet? I'm assuming the obligatory sound issues are there as well as save states, but are quick saves there (temporary RAM saves) as well? And how does it look?

Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

I will join the cries heard on gamefaqs - this selection is lame at best, and the only redeeming hope is if Sega is planning a volume 2 with the Shining Forces, the rest of Shinobi and the Bare Knuckles.
That said, if the emulation is spotless as in Gunstar Treasure Box, I'll support this release, if only for Phantasy Star IV...
edit: developed by Backbone Entertainment?? O_o Now I definitely wait for some hands-on impressions...

Good - classic. Not that Ristar and Sonics aren't already on a few comps. I think it's worth it if you don't have GG, PS4, Shinobi 3, a Genesis or a Genesis emulator.Decap Attack starring Chuck D. Head

They should really go with fan voting for these types of things.
I think, it may turn out just as bland.
I would completely agree Rob, except I'd swap Golden Axe and Golden Axe II in place. What's more to like in II? The original is still the best...
By the way, Shadow Dancer seems to be missing from the European version.

Why the didn't include Golden Axe I and II arcade while they were there, instead of the Altered Beast coin-op is beyond me...

I actually think this is one of the best retro comp packs around...true, there are some obvious "mehs," but I can't name a single retro pack with this many games that are all A+ titles (ex. Taito Memories 2, which has a bunch of downright unplayable games along with stuff like Gun Frontier, etc.). The good ones are damn good, like PS4 and the two Shinobi games, and I know I'll spend good time with them.

Yeah, you get everything in Sonic Gems Collection. In Bare Knuckle I&II, there's an additional one-button trigger to perform the B+C back attack. And of course, you get the original JP version of Bare Knuckle III.Kiken wrote:Get the Japanese version of Sonic Gems. All three Bare Knuckles on one disc.. and the audio isn't completely screwed up. In fact, some of it sounds resampled.shinsage wrote:The inclusion of Super Thunder Blade and exclusion of every Streets of Rage is killing me.

Who in the hell compiles these lackluster lists of games for god sakes? These are titles that most sega fans have already had for years; and if they don't, most of them are cheap as hell anyway...What's the point? I can only assume that they must be shooting for games with name recognition, even though they were pretty much always a niche company.
How about a compilation with rare jp and pal titles, now that would f'n sell; at least on places like this. I'm a real sega fan, but I've never seen a manufacturer consistently make so many questionable moves in my life...

I think that Sega excluded Streets of Rage so they'll avoid that dreaded "Teen" rating. They dropped it from Sonic Gems for the same reason.

Companies that try to be "PC" all the time really annoy the crap out of me.Reports had suggested that the decision to drop Streets of Rage from the Western line-up was down to the violent nature of the game and would increase the age rating of the collection.
Crazy, can't believe I forgot about that. That was part of the reason I started to hate Sega, for bending over to appeal to soccer moms.
It would rock considerate amounts of face if Sega did do a collection of their arcade games. I keep hearing Shadow Dancer arcade is better than the port, but I refuse to believe!

Eh, I prefer the home version of Shadow Dancer. It was the first game that I was super obsessed over and thought it was the coolest thing in the universe when it first came out. Still, a home port of the arcade version would be nice.
This may be old news to die hard Shinobi fans, but I've always felt that Shinobi was split in two different series:
Shinobi-arcade, then Shadow Dancer (arcade or MD version)
Revenge of Shinobi, then Shinobi III, then Shin Shinobi Den (if you want to count that)
Two totally different gameplay styles.

It's pretty obvious that popular obmissions like the Shining Force series and Streets of Rage series, Toejam & Earl, Sonic 3 and S&K have been left out for future Genesis compilation volumes. They need to save some of the high profile titles to sell (hopefully) another volume.
There is a bit of meh in this compilation, but I can't complain. Some people have very high standards around here I've noticed. No love at all for Revenge of Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, Bonanza Brothers, Ristar, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, Super Thunder Blade, DecapAttack, Sword of Vermillion, etc.? They're not the greatest, but they're still pretty fun.
Personally, I like how the compilation mixes high profile titles with some obscure, lesser known titles. Get it to sell with popular titles, and give the buyers a pleasant surprise when they find out some of the lesser known games are actually good. It gives people the chance to experience overlooked gems like Gain Ground and DecapAttack.

What the? Where did you get the impression people don't love Ristar and Revenge of Shinobi? Lumping games like Super Thunder Blade and Sword of Vermillion in with them is a major foul. THOSE suck. I even put Decapattack on my good list.Xexyz wrote:No love at all for Revenge of Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, Bonanza Brothers, Ristar, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, Super Thunder Blade, DecapAttack, Sword of Vermillion, etc.?

Sigh, I really want to like this collection... My main problem with it are the many sound glitches and weird programming techniques for them. Here are some examples:
Sonic 1: Ring collecting sound is way off
Sonic 2: Get speed boots and music doesn't speed up
Columns: The music doesn't speed up and slow down anymore and is missing entire sections, like the "critical" music sections.
Phantasy Star II: Really ear-piercing level-up sfx
Phantasy Star IV: Battle music keeps playing after battle end SFX starts running together and sounding very messy
Golden Axe: All enemies and villagers have the same male scream of death
There are more, but you get the point. They streamed the music for some reason (if you pop the disc out the music will stop), so this explains a lot of it. I know that is nit-picking but I loved the Genesis sound chip, so I have fond memories of the sounds from these games. So if you are thinking about picking it up, keep those points above in mind.
