It is indeed! Image As it turns out, I have to recalibrate my usual appraisal of the series; which is one contiguous story, split up over five and counting mangas. I'd always assumed the florid insanity of Netflix's MOST DANGEROUS DEATH ROW CONVICTS arc had crept in along the way. (the adaptation has continued from there).
Manga Chronology, for reference
1. Grappler Baki (has late 90s/early 00s anime)
2. New Grappler Baki - In Search Of Our Strongest Hero (Netflix anime)
3. Hanma Baki - Son of Ogre (Netflix currently adapting)
4. Baki-dou (written in kanji)
5. Baki-dou (written in katakana)
6. New series starting in a couple days, incidentally
I didn't realise that arc marks the beginning of the second manga, and the point where a fanciful combat shonen - Rambo Junior must defeat his invincible father, who generously sponsors the boy's antics in the hopes of sculpting a worthy opponent! - goes full Riki's Bizarre Adventure. Some say Ippo's Bizarre Adventure, but that does no justice to the hellacious bodycount, or the gornographic production of. Ippo's a good kid, he'd call the fuckin cops if he saw this shit! Baki and co know the cops, and the army, and the President of the United States of America can't do JACK SHIT to these leering living statues carved in the vague shapes of men Image

The OG manga is notably purer competitive fighting. Pocket Sand-aniki vs IRON MICHAEL was one hell of a contest! :o And so was the one before, and the one after!
SMILES AND TEARS.MP3 ;w; (`w´メ)
Image
While fundamentally unlike Ippo, which truly grounds its passions and agonies in the personal sacrifices of elite sport, it's undeniably in the same fiery ballpark; along with my other competitive shonen go-to, Kengan Ashura. Kengan's a rough middle ground between Ippo's sporting idealism and Baki's body-horrorizing mayhem.
OraOraOraOra! YOSHAAAAAA!

^ Joe Higashi (and OOT Link's) voice actor Nobuyuki Hiyama!
Baki Part 1's also quite mad in its own right, with Rambos younger and elder alike doing preposterous antics on The Hellish Battlefield. Also has a credible streak of pitch-black psychotrauma, in the bleak triangle of long-suffering Baki, his demonic father and twisted mother. If nothing else, Itagaki contributes one of shonen manga's all-time great boogeymen in paternal nemesis Yuujiro; who, like many great monsters, is not entirely unlikeable. A bloodsport epicure whose stony contempt conceals a shark-toothed grin of brutal joie de vivre; an apex predator all men who espouse carnage - at their own hands or others' - risk attracting the fiendish delectations of! Which side is the most heavily-armed? That's who Yuujiro will be slaughtering on his next working vacation to the hot zones Image He has impeccable table manners, too! A canonical Very Bad Cunt

Remember kids! Destroying someone and making them happy are two sides of the same coin ^w^
Image

Image
I enjoy the later stuff too, it's just a bit rich by its nature. Itagaki willfully left behind the realm of mere men and their sports to become an explorer in the outer limits of andro. Image Image

...which leads to some amusing conflicts of feeling in the younger Western fanbase, I've noticed. They shoulda paid attention! Even in the relative sanity of Part 1, this series has always been so searingly homo as to burn away the -erotic suffix entirely. Image Sex? Ohoho, I think you mean BESTIAL DOMINANCE EXERCISE Image

Uwaa! A mighty enumeration, Birru-dono! Thanks :)

At this point it would be rude not to dig in. So I got my feet wet with the OVA over dinner, which I understand to be a whistle-stop tour of the early first arc, culminating in the Cord Cutter fight.
That base premise is a hell of a sell all on its own, and it seems well executed; not a gram of fat on it, fighting ring a central pillar from moment one. Seems like a pretty evergreen formula to escalate straight to tournament!

Bit shocked to glance over and see a 1994 tag; there's an old-school feel to it that had me thinking 80s for some reason.
Perhaps it was the total blindside of the camera panning from JACKED, RIPPED, IRON HARD EVERYTHING to the most idealized babyface I've ever seen  threw me for a right loop after going in expecting a more Shin Baki-esque depiction!
And the personality to match - there's an odd one to reckon with. All the chutzpah of a fresh-faced rookie contendah, with a decade of pumping hard iron snuck in there somewhere as foundation.
Genki, cocky bastard, but likeable - curious to see where he goes. I sense the combination of OVA and early timeline means much of the real character drama is either snipped out or yet to come.

And even for early stuff, the gore and JoJoesque power battle flourishes were visible to the keen eye (✧ω✧*) a crazy pose here, a bit of ゴゴゴゴ there, and just a touch of squirming body horror.
I wonder how long the series will be able to stretch out no worries, we have the best doctors in the world! before the bodycount starts a-pilin' :o

ATTN: The following fresh fruits were spotted during tonight's viewing, and may still be at large.

Image : None!

Image : One!

Image : Also One!

Which is to say, I was expecting a few more grapples. Though you could say one was always enough, and the landing of it was the real tale.
(*heavy implications of honorabru bloodsportsmanship*) ...Nah man, I KOed you then and there instead of fucking up your arm because it was practical. GG! 8)
BIL wrote:OraOraOra! YOSHAAAAAA!
So that's where Ryu Ga Gotoku studio have been getting all their move ideas from! Weird to see it loop back around now 3D anime has taken root.
The secret bloodsport arena under the Tokyo Dome premise immediately has me thinking of Yakuza as well. Gets me wondering whether the cultural root is deeper yet - all these rad japanese punch men (optionally feat. hulking black gaijin side character) are starting to blur together
BIL wrote:Not Safe For Women Or Children (`w´メ)
Hahaha fuck, Tokugawa's face  a seething maelstrom of emotions!

FAKE EDIT: Well bugger me, I meant to hit post on this before burning a couple of hours catching up on the manga
Just hit the Tokyo Dome - so it IS that Mito Koumon. Hooh hoh hoh hooooh!
And as expected, there's a good bit more drama to chew on here. The OVA did pretty well trying to recreate the battle dynamism too, but still can't match the original slavishly-illustrated panels!

Glad you enjoyed! Image I'm gonna watch the OG anime series after I'm done with the manga; originally I was into it for the 00s-tastic breakbeats - what better accompaniment to Mirror Universe Rambo running around NAM wasting Green Berets? Unf! OSHAAAA- but now I'd love to hear this stuff voiced.

The OG manga's quality has really surprised me. I kinda winced at the prospect of a tournament arc featuring the usual cast of indestructible supermen; the *challenge* *boast* "NANI?! BAKANAAA" formula works when you have Most Dangerous Death Row Convicts leaping out of random manholes, or when Baki's getting himself chucked into Most Dangerous Supermax Prison -
It's fun to stay at the FBOP~ ♫ (`w´メ) (◎w◎;)
Image
- but as straight contest? Happily, this is not that! It's thermonuclear shonen battle theatre  Everybody puts in work! Image Image

Aye, tournament does bring with it the possibility of predictability, and there have been a few yeah sure moments where it's blatant that the tides will turn a couple more times before the conclusion, though so far it's throwing out enough surprises to keep it captivating.

It's interesting to see how different the OVA turned out by virtue of a 3ish-year gap; the gore and JoJo factor is noticeably more pronounced there, with extra focus put on glowy red eyes and crunching bones.
Went out of its way to avoiding hinting at the beast behind Baki's mask too - content to maintain the who is this amazing kid illusion for sake of brevity, where the manga has been even-handed with light implication that there's TRUE ANSATSUKEN lurking.

He's actually kind of terrifying once you reach the Giant Baba arc  that goofy-ass grin takes on a new light when his real brutal capabilities come out!

Good thing Yujiro divekicked his way out of the shadows just in time to scoop all the heel points. I thought Rambo Jr. was in reference to the rippling battle-scarred musculature, not wholly literal  what a piece of work!
ゴゴ What, you're approaching (my helicopter?) ゴゴ
Image
Nice web of interpersonal bullshit too - mega dangerous psycho, clearly the final boss, but still proud of th' boi and available for play-by-play commentary when he's not busy murderfisting local sports franchises.

And cor, that next arc. Bit of a gear change, but Itagaki clearly knew how to keep the audience hooked.

Watching Darth Riccitello put Unity into money-squeeze mode and crash it into the ground is proving quite entertaining, in a watch-the-world-burn schadenfreude kind of way :)

I just hope a decent competitor surfaces to fill the hole, rather than letting the other mediocre big players muscle in on it.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned before, at least in this thread: Insufferable a-hole Johnny Somali will face prosecution in Japan for his stupid shenanigans. The act mentioned below was not his only stunt, of course: Somali had been a general pain in the ass for about a month, going around Tokyo Disneyland shouting “Fukushima! Atomic bomb! Shinzo Abe!”, and harassing train commuters telling them “we’re going to drop another atomic bomb”. He didn't even seem to have gotten the hint when someone punched the lights out of him right after giving women crap in the street.

What's Japanese for "Fuck around, and find out"?
