The Official Cool PCB You Just Got Thread!
Re: The Official Cool PCB You Just Got Thread!
I bought a cheap Final Fight that's been sitting in my forwarding address in the US for a while.
Dusty - definitely needs cleaning up - but works perfectly.
Forgotten how amazing this game looks.

Someone washed a bootleg Flying Shark I sold them a week or two ago. Suffice to say, it is no longer alive. Why people think electronics and water mix is a mystery to me - it's really hard to clean water out of chip sockets, from under TTLs which are pushed right down, etc.

Re: The Official Cool PCB You Just Got Thread!
I've washed a PCB before. Worked fine, and looks brand new now.
Re: The Official Cool PCB You Just Got Thread!
You can dry them in your oven at a 100 degrees Celsius. No, I'm not kidding. I've heard people using blow dryers as well, but that could cause static electricity. But before washing them, removing all removable parts is a must.

I believe Stefan_L uses a washing machine as well, and his boards look spotless! Of course you shouldn't be using any detergent, and remove any socketed chips before washing. As for drying, I've herd just leaving it next to a fan blowing cool air for a few hours will suck the moisture out.

ive seen threads on klov where people throw pcbs, wire harnesses, chassis, etc in their dishwashers and i'm amazed at the after pictures. but i wouldn't have the nerve to try it myself.

What region is this board? I've never seen V107 before...thought my V105 cart was the latest (with English text and high score initials).brentsg wrote:Demon Front PCB version..

I haven't any familiarity with the game whatsoever, and I just popped it in as the family was getting home. Is there anything you'd like me to check out, or I should look for when I give it a go?

Is the intro story and stage intro text in Korean or English? Same question on when you enter the high score initials. I have no idea if the versions are just region dependent or have actual bug fixes.
Re: The Official Cool PCB You Just Got Thread!
Looks like English voiceover, and pretty much all in-game text is English too including the high score initials screen. When you start a stage it flashes some Korean on the screen I believe. Intro story that scrolls the screen is Korean.

I'll try to add a few more. I took a bunch that turned out really bad.

Re: The Official Cool PCB You Just Got Thread!
The company I work for has been doing it for over a decade (thousands of PCB's annually). You just need to know your hardware. If it has parts that can rust, you gotta blow them off right after washing. If the chips are ceramic and not plastic packages, you need to dry them immediately. Ceramic packages absorb moisture.bloodflowers wrote:Why people think electronics and water mix is a mystery to me
The core reason we wash our PCB's is we use water soluable liquid flux while manufacturing the PCB's. When you are done, you just wash the thing thoroughly under hot water and then dry. For large batches we actually use a standard dish washer machine (fitted w/ screens on the racks so small parts don't fall through).
Washing electronics is not some "outlandish" "home brew" solution.

You've stated all the reasons people at home should avoid doing it How many people that are washing them know which parts can rust, or what is ceramic?undamned wrote:Washing electronics is not some "outlandish" "home brew" solution.
Not to mention the fact that you'll lose any labels on them.
Washing when there's a reason to (flux, congealed liquids) is the right thing to do. Washing because they're a bit dusty is silly.
Of course it's possible to do it right, without problems for years. But I'd bet that anyone who washes them doesn't take care to ground themselves before and while handling the boards, or leaves them flapping about connected to the JAMMA connector without mounting them correctly inside a cabinet...

Was Zed Blade the only NMK produced shmup game for the MVS or not (or did they do other genres instead of shmup titles)?

NMK had only one MVS title. After Zed, their last two games were Mega System 32 carts (P-47 Aces and Desert War).
Re: The Official Cool PCB You Just Got Thread!
I want a cut of that bet. How much do you suppose you owe me?cools wrote:But I'd bet that anyone who washes them doesn't take care to ground themselves before and while handling the boards, or leaves them flapping about connected to the JAMMA connector without mounting them correctly inside a cabinet...
I've hand-washed at least two boards (Surprise Attack, and before that something more common, forget what). Used a hair dryer to push water out from under flush-set DIP packages, no big deal. I wasn't aware ceramic parts have a special aversion to water - not sure what the problem there would be. Instead I'm careful to keep water from running into sockets. With the Surprise Attack I was hesitant to get any water near the corner of the board with a heatsink, some caps, and other stuff that isn't water friendly, but ultimately it made no difference.
I ground myself repeatedly when handling boards or electronics of any stripe. Metal support pole in the house, grounded computer case, easy. I don't have a cabinet (not a JAMMA one anyway) but I would mount it correctly even so, so 100% by default. (Come to think of it, that'd be a minor pain, finding feet for every loose board and continually putting holes in the back of the cab, wonder if any have a rack solution.)
Some of the "anti-cleaning" folks out there would be surprised that it's a good idea to keep the flyback transformer cable in a CRT clean of dust (just so long as you do it very gently; I imagine it's possible to zap yourself or somehow wrench the thing from its socket which should be under suction pressure anyway).

Ahh, the exception that proves the rule It's not anti-cleaning, it's "do it correctly or not at all". You'll still knacker up any labels on the PCB!
That cable is quite a beast, and well insulated...
Re: The Official Cool PCB You Just Got Thread!
I just use a moderately stiff small brush and get rid of the worst of the dust, and leave it at that.

Wow - I love these pre-'85 PCBs. They make for such wonderfully ungainly set-ups. Something I'm going to have to invest in one day.

Riding Fight is a great game but $400 is a high price for it?
Can you post a gameplay video of the Mitchell puzzlegame, it looks interesting and i have been thinking on getting one myself

Yeah, that's why I wrote "(long story)" because that's an obscene price. I would normally have been willing to pay up to about $150, but do to a bad mistake, ended up paying way more than I wanted to, heh.Stefan_L wrote:Riding Fight is a great game but $400 is a high price for it?

I'm not sure if the Mitchell puzzle game is emulated or not. Maybe somebody can confirm? If it's not, I'll try and record some video for you
I'm a sucker when it comes to Mitchell. If you like them too and have not played Charlie Ninja, you really aught to. It's quite charming

No System 10 games are emulated in MAME yet.
