I could, of course, look into hacking it, but I kind of like having a handful of games I really enjoy to focus on as opposed to literal hundreds that I might never really play. It does seem perfect for shmups, though... wonder if it's possible to do just that?

Now I no longer have to carry the X-arcade tank stick from my bedroom to the living room when I want to have a 10 minute game break. Just got a brand new Radio Shack tabletop electronic game that retailed for $34.99 usd back in 1983 that goes by the name of Astro Thunder. It even came with a Radio Shack A/C adapter as well as the original instruction manual to boot. You might recall that this very same sci-fi themed stg game was sold under Epoch's "Astro 7" for the Japanese market and in the UK under Grandstand's "Firefox FX-7" moniker back in 1983. What's interesting is that Epoch's Astro-7 version was billed as a 3-D LSI game on the original factory box itself whereas on the Grandstand box of Firefox FX-7, it was touted as a 5th generation VFD (Vacuum Florescent Display) game -- highly advanced for it's time considering it's 1983 retail release in those respective retail markets. The actual VFD screen itself has that old-school flickering effects + from dim to eventual overall brightness effects applied to the overall graphics is simply amazing -- this can't be replicated with modern-day LCD or OLED screens any ol' day. The outer Astro Thunder game shell is absolutely immaculate/flawless (and absolutely no damned "dreaded" scratches on it whatsoever) for it's age (and looks like it literally stepped out of a time machine).

What was cool about this particular tabletop VFD-based game is it's overall 3-D presentation complete with fresnel lense to make it larger-than-life. Even has twin stereo speaker setup (albeit with two piezo-based speakers housed inside for that unmistakable boops 'n' beeps audio presentation) that I've never seen with the other old-school VFD-based electronic games of the early 1980s era. Of course, all three games of Astro-7, Astro Thunder & Firefox FX-7 were manufactured in Japan -- so the craftmanship is quite impressive/stellar for it's age/time.

I've noticed that if you plug in one of those 1980s old-school Radio Shack a/c adapters rated a 6v with 150mah in a U.S. based 120v outlet, it does tend to get warm after awhile (whereas if I were to a use a multi-switch PSU, that particular issue would be cool to the touch). I also found out that in order to move your fightercraft either to the left or the right, you have press down and in the direction to move it -- initially, I thought it was defective but it isn't.

I recall going to the local mall and checking out Radio Shack back in 1983. They had a table setup with Astro Thunder up & running -- I proceeded to start a gaming session on it and was blown away by the high-tech presentation of it (considering it was a "state-of-the-art" VFD game with the latest 'n' greatest technology applied to it at that point in time). Of course, Radio Shack was well known to have other manufacturers make the actual products and slap on their Radio Shack brand name to be sold in their brick 'n' mortar stores in the early 1980s. Years later, I forgot what the name of that particular VFD game was and was browsing on ebay one day and came across a retro electronic VFD game re-seller who told me that by narrowing down the exact description of said VFD game with an arcade joystick installed on it, that it was either Astro Thunder or Astro Command -- it was Astro Thunder to be exact so many years later. Ah, the wonderful memories of trying it out back in 1983...wow.

Factoid time: Minimum wage in California for 1983 was at $3.10 usd per hour so you had to work a considerable number of hours to afford this Astro Thunder game back in 1983 if you wanted it bad enough with it's original listed MSRP of $34.99 usd.

Quite a blast/stroll down memory land with this Astro Thunder tabletop VFD electronic game indeed. Quite stoked to have this prized long-lost VFD game in my stash alrighty & in brand new condition (such a rarity nowadays considering it's 39 year old technology). Could such a modern-day VFD-based electronic tabletop game be made today?

As much as I enjoy Deathsmiles, some of the characters' designs make me a little hesitant about having it on display.
(Despite still using the 360's faceplate all these years later...)

Not gonna pretend this felt reasonably priced, but it was retail price at least. Upgraded my mobo, CPU, and RAM back in January, so this was kinda the only thing remaining and my tax refund dropped in this month, and I was planning on using that on a new GPU. So I did!

I just bought their TUF Gaming motherboard brand (B550M-PLUS) on a friend's recommendation; hopefully I have better luck as I'll never buy a Gigabyte MB again after I bricked it just by testing SecureBoot/CSM in the BIOS for Win11 compatibility (lost video signal, almost lost my Win7 partition/drive, it was a mess!). It led to a full system upgrade for about $600 (new CPU Ryzen 7 5800X, extra 16GB DDR4=>32GB RAM total, +extra 1TB SSD, etc.). The previous Gigabyte 450 was bought in 2019, didn't last long...

Saw that PC Engine Turbografx-16 PC-FX Anthology hardcover book listed on Amazon and snagged a copy.

It does list an error in regards to the Turbo Express as being released back in September of 1990 courtesy of NECHE USA subsidiary themselves (when it actually was released stateside in January of 1991 with a $299.99 usd pricetag & as a very limited distribution across the USA at that point in time -- I had the rare chance of trying out a pre-production Turbo Express handheld at "The Good Guys!" store back in October of 1990 with a copy of Devil's Crush up & running on it & was told by two NECHE USA reps that it would be available to buy in December of 1990 for an estimated/tentative $249.99 usd pricepoint). I couldn't believe how slick the TFT-based LCD screen that Epson of Japan manufactured used in the PC Engine GT & Turbo Express handhelds -- no subpar LCD screens used here to begin with courtesy of NEC pulling out all the stops to deliver a high-end super premium gaming handheld regarded nowadays as the "Rolls Royce of portable gaming". Due to the high production manufacturing costs of making each Turbo Express, NEC jacked up the price to an insane MSRP of $299.99 usd when it finally was released stateside in January of 1991. Eventually, it was possible to buy a brand new TE for a mere $99.99 usd in February of 1995 on clearance from mail-order vendor G&G Captron, an American based video game business selling both brand new game consoles & video game software through the mail back in the mid-1990s. Another American mail-order based business (although misspelled in this particular PCE book) sold brand new TG-16 & Turbo Duo hardware + software was none other than "Turbo Zone Direct" based out of Southern California in the mid-1990s as well.

Too bad this PCE hardcover book doesn't mention any of the various 3rd-party PCE/TG-16 flash carts that were/are available to purchase like with the famous & much beloved Krikzz Turbo Everdrive flash cart setup. Certainly is worth it's weight in gold just to be able to properly play the uber-rare TTI variant of Magical Chase stg without breaking the bank quite easily nowadays.

sure proxy is the only way from europe (ebay european prices are so insane ..), there online, some are really cheap but they dont appear so much (Oedo 808, still missing the 3/3), a Memories box LD or Macross boxset, is only 1€ ! just to figure +15/20€ en total fees/shipping. for the Akira ticket i really wanted it yep .. but auctions with the original ticket present are uncommon.. damn i missed in the meanwhile one which had the ticket.. :/
