Also the picture shows the implants on the arms and the "facial stumps" which I only know from Cyberpunk. How come I have misjudged this so much?
Huumm, Cyberpunk flopped hard from what I understand, and people playing your quizz have taste and dont play flop ?

Cyberpunk didn't flop at all (eight million pre-orders; biggest digital launch of all time), it was just a big letdown for such a big project for a lot of people and riddled with a lot of bugs.

Despite not playing, when I took a cursory look that was a pretty easy one. I just don't think a lot of people on forums like this play that sort of game. I remember when it came out only a few of us were talking about it.

Yes I agree, a Shmups forum (or any of the many Retro communities) is not the right audience for Cyberpunk 2077. :)

New round is coming today!

June Quiz - Retro Pixel 2022

After last month's theme gave several people a strange browsing history and caused some discontent, we're falling back to familiar territory for June: the annual Retro Pixel Quiz with zoomed in game characters. ;)

We have 25 games with (mostly) 2D graphics from the years 1985 to 2023, so as usual old & new combined for your enjoyment and scaled up so far you could count all the pixels. Have fun! :)

We're looking for the name of the game and not the name of the character (even if they are sometimes identical), and if you recognise the series that's enough - you don't have to name the exact instalment.

Deadline is Thursday 30th June, enter via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Here comes the quiz, good luck:

Same here. I think I can identify a dozen or so, but there are a bunch of others I know I’ve seen before. I just can’t place them.

looking forward to it. ;)

Seems like a difficult round... average score is quite low so far, if you manage to get the first row you're in safe territory for now!

June Quiz - Clues #1

And once again the puzzle is DIFFICULT. So far 26 participants, very low average score and there's still games that have not been recognised.... Maybe YOU can do it? :)

Here come the first clues:

1) Eight games in this round have been released exclusively for only one system - three of them for Nintendo GBA and three for Commodore Amiga.
2) Number 6 - in this final part of a platformer trilogy, you play a ...fish.
3) #9 came out exclusively for the Switch in 2017, a sports game with more plot than usual.
4) Game 7 is the only title with 3D graphics in this round, here you are on a relaxing holiday and climb a mountain.

Deadline is Thursday 30 June, please enter via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/.

Here is the quiz again, good luck: https://i.imgur.com/JfDfNe9.png

June Quiz - Clues #2

Wow, what a short month: we are actually in the last weekend of June already! The short time meets an extra nasty puzzle where despite forty players (of which two from here) not all games have been recognised yet.
Whether it's 1986 or 2023, Spectrum home computer or Nintendo Switch... here are the last hints, your forum needs you! :)

1) The games are spread across the decades as follows: three from the 80s, ten 90s, three 00s, six 10s and three from this decade.
2) Numbers 8 & 14 are early spin-offs from famous & long-running JRPG series.
3) Numbers 12 and 17 you can only play on Windows and Switch... but one of them didn't come out yet.
4) The following titles have (also) been released on the Commodore Amiga: 4,6,11,16,19,20,22,25.

Deadline is next Thursday the 30th of June, participation via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

June Quiz - Answers & Score

It is rare that a game of this series has an answer rate of less than 10% - this time it was even just 0.7% for game #24, so only one user out of over 100 players found the right answer. Congrats to Marek from the ResetEra for this achievement! o_o

About the bonus question: 94% of you are vaccinated, 6% have no vaccination (and 24 users were left out because of no or unclear answer). Sounds quite reasonable?

And on a personal note - the NexGam community and the World-of-Players are dropping out due to a lack of players, instead the Forum64 and the Circuit Board are joining with a total of seven players. A warm welcome! :)

But now it's time for some answers... first the names of the games as text, then the pictures, then the high score table.

1) Crash Bandicoot XS
Also known as "Crash Bandicoot - the huge adventure".
Answer rate: 99%
Other suggestions: -

2) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
The adaptation of the first film for the GBA.
Answer rate: 96%
Other suggestions: -

3) Spyro 2: Season of Flame
Which character from the first row is the most famous: Harry, Simba, Spyro, Ecco or Crash? It's Spyro... As the only one with 100% Answer rate. :)
Answer rate: 100%
Other suggestions: -

4) Lion King
The adult Simba in battle against Scar.
Answer rate: 99%
Other suggestions: -

5) Ecco Jr
The prequel to the Sega Dolphin games.
Answer rate: 91%
Other suggestions: Arielle, EcoQuest, The Touryst

6) James Pond 3
Answer rate: 71%
Other suggestions: 3x Yoshi, Super Mario Bros, Wario world, Jelly Boy, Muppets, Rex

7) A Short Hike
This is a bird, not a penguin. :)
Answer rate: 53%
Other suggestions: 9x Animal Crossing, club penguin, Disgaea, Minish Cap, Pingu, The Turyst, Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero

8.) Final Fantasy 2
Answer rate: 53%
Other suggestions: 3x Gauntlet, Athena, Dragon Quest Monsters, Gianna Sisters, Kid Icarus, Red Sonya, Wonder Boy in Monster World

9) Golf Story
Sports Story, which has not yet been released, apparently uses the same protagonist and therefore also counted.
Answer rate: 57%
Other suggestions: Pokemon, Earthbound, Harvest Moon, go vacation, gravejard keeper, Andy Capp, Mother, River City, Stardey Valley

10) Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP
From this title on, the answer rate drops below 50% and stays there...
Answer rate: 46%
Other suggestions: FEZ, Flashback, Hyper light drifter, Kingdom: Two Crowns, Machinarium, Salt & Sanctuary, Uncanny Valley

11) Arabian Nights
We already had this last year (my mistake), at least the sprite was completely different.
Answer rate: 33%
Other suggestions: 7x Aladdin, Earthbound, (Super) Mario Bros, Mario vs Donkey Kong, Soccer Kid

12) ElecHead
Released last month on the Switch, but has been available for PC for some time.

So many people have named the sequel that I'm not sure myself which part this is.
Answer rate: 30%
Other suggestions: Broforce, Door Kickers: Action Squad, Exit the Gungeon, Hero Legend, One step from eden, Zelda

16) Base Jumpers

Answer rate: 20%
Other suggestions: Addams Family, D-Generation, Impossible Mission, Nintendo World Cup, Speedball, Superball, Syndicate

21) Solitaire (Windows 98)
Not as difficult as I thought - a king from Windows 98 Solitaire. There are so many variations of it that I just accepted any "card game" in the end.
Answer rate: 75%
Other suggestions: Katamari Damacy, Kingdom hearts, King's Quest

22) Exolon
The Euro shmup classic Turrican would not be listed in the last row. ;)
Answer rate: 13%
Other suggestions: 13x Turrican, Doom, Megaman, Probotector, Soldier of Light, Terraria, X Com.

23) the Eidolon
Okay, a really mean screen fragment. My respect to the people who recognised it.

Congrats for the Top 10 showing, HS! :)

As I thought, I was quite lost in space this round; no amount of Hail Mary guessing would have helped on the ones I didn't already know. REALLY frustrated I couldn't remember Elechead's name, though, as it's a really distinctive sprite and I immediately knew I'd seen it before.

Thank you. This was my first time playing, but certainly not the last.

I knew I had seen Elechead before, but I couldn’t remember the name for the life of me. The same happened to me with Sword & Sorcery. My mind always wanted to jump to Hyper Light Drifter, even though I knew the answer was wrong. At least I did remember that one in the end. I really should have recognized Sensible Train Spotting, though, as I had read up about Sensible Software’s history just recently.

Exolon was tricky. I would have recognized any of its 8 bit versions in an instant, but the 16 bit sprite was a lot harder to place.

I think you left a comment in the form for both Elechead and Gunbrella that told me you got them mixed up - Gunbrella was the one that hadn't released yet. :) Did you later remember what you thought it was?

July Quiz - Gaming Maps

Well, when was the last time you drew a map yourself in a video game? :) I think my last really big dungeon map was in the RPG Ishar 2 in the 90s, in my old math exercise book... after that, small stuff at most. This round is about all kinds of "maps" - from futuristic radar UIs to classic dungeon crawlers, from transparent automaps to floor plans scribbled on paper.

So, how many do you know? And bonus question, where did I take the map from the intro picture from? ;)

Once again, I'm sure I've left out a lot of really great games because I simply didn't know them (or the titles were already in previous rounds). Leave me a comment with your favourite missing map? :)

Deadline is Sunday 31st of July, enter via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Here's the quiz, grab your compass and let's go!

Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Wow, this is really tricky. I think I'll have to wait for some hints.

I think I can at least identify the series for maybe ten or so. Would that be enough or does it have to be the exact entry? In some series these tend to look quite similar.

For sure this one seems to be very hard ! Yes, usually Mr Horizon accepts approximation in the answers.

Hey, welcome to the quiz! :) But as Guigui said, please don't post answers in the thread while the round is still going... use the google form instead: http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Edit: I entered you myself - and did a quick count, you're already not the last one in the high score. 8)

@Herr Schatten, yes putting the series is enough. You don't have to identify the exact instalment. It's difficult enough as it is. ;)

Back on this one. Felt I knew enough to at least give it a shot. Crazy how I can stare at this for a full hour and then convince myself I might know something I probably don't!

July Quiz - Clues #1

This round has been running for a week, so far 35 people have demonstrated their map skills. Not bad, but I'm sure there are plenty more to come! However, almost no one has got the bonus question right yet, so I want to give something away here - I cheated a bit, this is not a computer game. ;)

Here come the first clues:

1) Game 1 shaped its genre so much, the term "Game 1 clone" was very common for years.
2) In Game 14, the first in a long series, you are exclusively in the water.
3) The first version of map #3 more or less founded an entire genre.
4) Four titles in this round have been released exclusively for Nintendo consoles.

Deadline is Sunday 31st July, enter via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Here's the quiz again, good luck: https://i.imgur.com/c3y7vic.png

July Quiz - Clues #2

One more weekend and then the final sprint of this round begins - you have just under ten days left to join! Forty-five players are already in.
There will be no more clues next Friday, just a reminder to the forgetful procrastinators among you. :)

Here come the second clues:

1) The 15 is an automap in a game from a west RPG series.
2) Game 10 was not released until over 20 years after its completion.
3) In title 12 you use a hovercraft as one of the ways to move around the game.
4) Nothing is Commodore exclusive, but 8, 17, 19 & 20 are multiplatform games that were also released on C64 or Amiga.

Deadline is Sunday 31st July, enter via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/.
