I've not tried Zatoichi yet. There's a fuck ton I've missed. Working through it slowly.drauch wrote:Not sure if you've seen any Zatoichi films, but that's actually his brother! They were both pretty chubby during their entire careers. I love it.
I've got the series but still haven't given it a shot. I assume you're right though on the lack of violence; it certainly appears that way.

Did you watch Twin Peaks? Can't recall if you mentioned so in the thread. The Return was great -- definitely in the same vein as Mulholland Drive... even better use of sound (and music). Mulholland Drive defo wins in girl in girl action though!

Horizon Line: **
2020 drama from Sweden (but in English for some reason) where a lady and her ex boyfriend are flying on a small plane to a wedding on a tropical island when the pilot dies of a heart attack and his corpse conveniently (for plot purposes) smashes every single navigation instrument in the cockpit on the way out leaving them flying blind in the middle of the ocean. This one lays the drama on thick with a series of ever escalating plot contrivances providing an endless supply of scenery chewing between the two protagonists.
Will probably annoy anyone who has even the most rudimentary knowledge of modern flight safety protocols.

I watched the original TP series like 3 times. I'm old enough that I caught it on TV when it first aired. I have not yet watched the return series, I'm waiting for the right moment.

Okay, the Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers movie was actually kinda fun! But now with that out of the way, I've finally reached one of my main targets: Top Gun: Maverick!

Uncharted: **
Big dumb action movie based on the Playstation series of the same name. I only played about half of the first Uncharted game and found the plot interesting but the gameplay a horrendous slog to get through (basically it's the same gunfight with the same few disposable goons repeated ad nauseam with a few parkour sequences thrown in), but that was long enough ago that I don't remember much of it. I think the big over-the-top action sequences started showing up more in the second game and later, and the film seems to leverage those quite a bit. My second biggest issue with the movie is that Tom Holland is a really terrible fit for the character of Nathan Drake based on the character in the games, and Mark Wahlberg would have been a much better fit for the role. A far more glaring issue with the plot is that the Macguffin hunt takes our heroes to such exotic locales in the middle of Barcelona as an extremely busy nightclub and a pizzeria, both of which happened to have been built in ancient buildings with random keyholes on the walls. By the time they reach the Macguffin Chamber, pretty much everyone in the audience realizes that if such a place existed in real life Barcelona by the time our heroes made it there it would have been turned into a museum about 150 years ago. The same goes for the location of the inevitable huge treasure at the end, there is no way a place like that would not have been found hundreds of years ago, and that's the part that really ruins this one.
That said, I can't wait to see how badly CinemaSins rips this one to shreds...

lol. Yeah, I know, I know. I am way overdue to watch it, and I keep having to tell my friends not to spoil anything. Especially for TP I don't want any clues ahead of time.GaijinPunch wrote: Wow! That is serious will power. I've watched it 3 times already.

I enjoyed recently watching the recent AVGN video about Bronson Cave in LA. I know it's a youtube video and not a movie, but it's about movies, so I'm putting it here. It's a lot of fun to see so many of the films and TV shows filmed in the same location matched up.

Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers: ***
It has been 30 years since the original Rescue Rangers show was on TV so it's pretty clear this was made for the audiences that watched the show back when it was on, not for current kids and teens who have most likely never heard of it. That said, it feels like an attempt to make a modern day Who Framed Roger Rabbit type movie (and yes, Roger Rabbit is one of the too-many-to-count cameos) where Chip and Dale, estranged from each other since the cancelation of the original TV show, reluctantly team up to try to find Monterey Jack after he runs afoul of a gang that abducts Toons, "bootlegs" them by altering their appearance and forces them to make off-brand straight to DVD movies and shows for the bargain bin. The plot is pretty predictable, but there are countless blink-and-you'll-miss-it references that you would probably need to watch the movie multiple times to catch. Of course, the one everyone seems to be talking about is...
This one is clearly a nostalgia play for the 90s kids out there, but does a pretty good job of it.

Ugly Sonic, the version of Sonic the Hedgehog from the first trailer for that movie which was later replaced after the Internet backlash the design generated.

The Northman
I was really disappointed with this. First off the the story is bad and almost non existent. Then it portrays the Vikings as acting like animals which is total bs. Then it focuses way too much on all this mystical bs that takes up the entire movie gets really irritating. There’s one part where he has a video game styled boss fight with a undead warrior in a tomb to get a special sword. Instantly made my eyes roll. Did not care for this at all despite having high hopes for it. This is more like Morrowind the movie honestly than a awesome epic Viking story.

Really bizarre movie where, through the use of an experimental fertility drug he developed, Arnold Schwarzenegger somehow is able to become pregnant and carry it to term. Played mostly straight, which makes it even more bizarre. think the most valuable lesson to be learned from this one is that you should never take medical advice from Danny DeVito. Emma Thompson also shows up in this one as well.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)
Who the hell thought the best way to adapt HGTTG was by turning it into a manic-pixie-dreamgirl rom-com?
Arthur Dent is too boring for manic-pixie Trillian, who leaves the party with Zaphod instead, but Dent still gets the girl in the end by default because Zaphod turns out to be mega-hitler.
I suspect the reason they made Zaphod so much more stupid and evil is some kind of ham-fisted swipe at Bush jr's presidency.
Also why not just give Zaphod a single head in this adaptation? Why give him that disgusting neck-head, then add a boring unfunny scene where John Malkovich cuts it off?
I will at least give the film credit for excellent casting and a much more manic tone than the dry and lifeless 1980s BBC adaptation.

Yeah first half was a lot better than expected. I like that they used many handmade effects. Opening scenes were fantastic with the edolphins singing a musical version of So long, and thanks for all the fish!. Zaphod's heads were stupid, and I was wondering whether they lacked the budget to make them the same as in the book. Arthur Dent was aight, Ford Prefect was great. Things turned to bullshit in the second half. Oh well...

Given the many years that a HHGTTG film spent in Development Hell it's a wonder it got made in the first place.

Double Indemnity and Apocalypse Now are the last 2 movies I watched. DI was as amazing as I remembered it to be and I watched only the 79 cut of Apocalypse Now. Both look fantastic on 4K UHD disc. DI being the first black and white movie I have on 4K too. I forgot just how insane Apocalypse Now gets towards the end though. Such a surreal film but not better than Double Indemnity.

Not sure if I recommend Apocalypse Now: Redux. It's definitely cool to watch once but fuck me it's long.

Top Gun: Maverick... Words cannot describe how amazing it was. I enjoyed every second of it, including the final dogfight, which had me felt like I was in an Ace Combat game. 10/10.
Re: Movies you've just watched
DI is definitely rad. I'm often disappointed myself in a lot of film noir, mainly because it never can be as dark as the source material due to Hollywood's bullshit code. Out of the Past is one off the top of my head that ticks all the right boxes and actually feels kinda dirty.GaijinPunch wrote:Not sure if I recommend Apocalypse Now: Redux. And yeah, I think on a rewatch a couple years back I decided I'm done with Redux. I like a lot of what is presented, but it starts to feel really disjointed and loses its pace. Like the French plantation part: it's great, and it's a part of history you don't see in media, but it's too lengthy and quickly becomes uninteresting. Same with the girls. One of two movies too where you see Wonderwoman's tittays, only in centerfold form. I think it happens in Redux during that part, but my memory might be hazy--regardless, it's in the movie, and the tittay fact is 100%, other than Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw, a pretty mediocre 'couple on the run' movie. SPEAKING of boobs, also one of the few where you see Colleen Camp's bewbs. Hey man, when I see good boobs it gets documented in the ol' perverted noggin. Just statin' some fun factoids, don't judge ^_~

Dr. Strange 2 (3 outta 5)
Ok MCU movie, but with some serious and specific flaws. Raimi rushes through the story so quickly that, by the midpoint, I could barely remember what was going on.

Spoiler
It all falls apart about 2/3rds of the way through when the protagonists jump to the illuminati world; everything here is a poorly written waste of time, and they don't even show the proper amount of gore in the one fight scene to make up for it. Things pick back up towards the end when Strange finally uses the Book of the Dead (oops sorry I mean the Darkhold), but it wasn't enough to shake the feeling that this movie was a mess. This would have made an excellent Disney + 8 episode series and that's what it should have been.

You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Gonna see the new Top Gun in theaters with my buddies soon, so I threw on the original since I haven't seen it in a while.
Damn, that's a classic. Some of the dialogue is pure cheese, and sometimes Cruise looks like a total god damn dork, but god damn, the movie is relentlessly iconic.
